Normally I don't carry a pillion helmet around but if it is obvious then I do carry an extra helmet for my pillion. Today I went to pick my old buddy up from the railway station and on seeing me kitted up he didn't show any weird reaction and when I offered him the helmet he refused to wear it, He said that his hairstyle would be ruined. I happened to argue with him for more than 5 minutes to make him wear a helmet.

Enjoy the attentionOriginally posted by anirudh fz1 View Posti have the lot of experience in that while standing in the signal ,people all around you stare when you wear riding gloves ,race jacket ,knee guards .
and once they have seen you (cab drivers, auto drivers, teens ) all act like crazy and start ripping their bikes in front of you & overtake you rudely.
i als understand if u have some pretty chick on a scooty & try to show off,
but have i seen this so many times to us bikers who wear gloves ,guards.
If things are not going right. Go left

Re: why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear
I too face the same situation while going to my college everyday......
I ride a TVS Wego.....
I have a Studds helmet(not a very fancy one) but with a tinted visor, I also wear a jacket and gloves.....
People stare at me and these comments, "scooty pe hi toh jaa rha hai, itna show-off kyu karta hai"(he's just going on a scooty, why is he showing-off so much) are very common for me....
But I just move on 'cause I wear these to protect myself and not others.......
IMHO,protective gear should also be made compulsory to some extent in our country........

Protective gear is compulsory in India but who cares here about the rules.
The biggest joke is if you wear all appropriate gear and ride a fast bike chances are you'll get a lecture about road safety from a "lichchad" wearing chappal and cap riding a crappy bike with no brakes (unbelievable? Believe it).

Re: why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear
Some tips regarding the cops harassing the fully geared rider:
1. Carry few pics of some of the normal desi chappal wala commuter who have crashed and sustain injuries/ bruises in your mobile phone. Such pics are widely available on google. Prefer to carry the pics showing bruises or injuries on palms, arms, shoulder (to justify for wearing a riding jacket) and face ( for good quality helmet).
2. Whenever you are stopped/ questioned by cops for wearing alien looking gears, simply take out your phone and show those pics telling them that a motorcycle is much prone to accident than a car. Build few imaginary stories about a couple of people you know were hurt/ injured in some motorcycle crashes etc. and were admitted in hospitals, their bills etc. and how they could have sustained the injuries as shown in the pics had they were wearing such riding jackets. As the cops are humans and they have a tendency to relate every accident with some one whom they knew, this could be beneficial. You can also add that how a girl next door riding a punny scooty at 20-30 Kmph was hit from behind by a fast vehicle and she got some injuries while it was not her fault.
PS: The story building part depends on your level of imagination and creativity. Apologies for being straight forward.
3. Allow/ ask them to have a feel/ touch your riding jacket and the armors. Knuckle protector in the riding glove should be shown as well and explain them the benefit of the knuckle protectors and all the riding gears. Tell them that yes these are costly but spending 5-6 thousand for protection is better than spending 50 thousand and 10 days in hospital.
#The above mentioned points are tried and tested with a Pulsar and a Ninja 250 at Airoli check naka and at EEH-Mulund check naka (Mumbai).A cold hamburger can be reheated quite nicely by strapping it to an exhaust pipe and riding forty miles.......... Live 2 Ride /m\\

Re: why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear
In India, it seems to be a crime if you wear a pair of gloves anytime apart from winter. I wear it during monsoon and painfully try to explain the reason/logic to everyone.
But, I don't know why should I even have to explain!A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Dude in India anything that is not as per standards set in the 50's is a crime.
You know in the old days people spent money on necessary things not "mahengi shauk Ki cheez" (costly recreational things) like riding gear (obvious sarcasm). Don't let these fools bother you. If cops ask just say "meri jaan mujhe paise se jyada pyari hai" (I value my life more than money).

be it parents/friends/colleagues... anyone and everyone ... a motorcycle above 90k is "mahenga shauk" and not a commuter .
a tool to ride fast "create mayhem" to trouble parents and others.
a wastage of money " a used sedan can be bought for soame money and accomodate 4 with AC"
keep your parents happy , keep your family happy.. etc etc .. blah blah ... no one comes and asks : are you happy ??"A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel."

Re: why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear
Exactly my point. The whole world talks about morals and values but nobody realizes they are being immoral in telling a man to give up what he loves. Riding gear is a concept that will probably never catch on in India, mostly because people here don't look at riding gear as protection. People in India think that riding jackets are the same as a winter jacket, that riding shoes are just expensive nike's, that there is no difference between a wrangler helmet bought from the road side and an ARAI bought and imported from USA. We wear this stuff and they think we are showing off.Originally posted by theironhorse99 View Postthat notion hasn't changed yet...

It makes me laugh but my own parents have actually said this to me when I wanted a helmet worth 5000/- coz it offered better all round protection than the local stuff
and my parents are quite educated and have a high social standing. This is due to the lack of awareness among the masses and the governments unwillingness to do something about it.
And thats why my policy is to tell the smug cops and old uncles and dadajis that I value my life and would rather be alive than good at money management.
