  • Intend on modifying my Pulsar 180 UG3, please share some Gyaan!

    Hi Guys,

I have a black 180 UG3 Dtsi which has run 24000 Km on the Odo. Bike is 2 years and 4 months old. It is pretty good shape and has been looked after along the same lines as my girl friend.

Like most thing in life, except my girl friend, I need some change. The modifications done to the bike thus far are:
    1. KN Air Filter 1060C
    2. NGK Iridium Spark Plugs

I have a big wish list in store for my ride! I would welcome all suggestions and ideas with open arms and wee bit closed wallet Please do advise on the feasibility of this project

Following are a list of mods I intend on:

    1. Beefier Front Forks, similar to the ones on the FZ-16. Actually the one on the FZ. Spares cost 6500 in chennai
    2. Tire upgrade, front & rear. Maybe a 90 up front and 120 rear. Not too intent on tubeless. Should come to 4k. Note no change to the rims or the swing arm, I would prefer a straight fit.
    3. Engine replacement with a bigger capacity engine. The 200 piston block is a straight fit, how would the 220 set be compatible? cost of engine mod would be 11k for 200 and 15k for 220. I have got this quotation from a good bike mechanic in Chennai
    4. Modification to the front, removal of the dome to give it a more classic naked bike look. should not cost more than 2000/- for visual mods
    5. HID units, should cost me another 4000/-
    6. Replacing the twin shox on the 180 with a monoshock unit such as the one on the FZ. Is this modification worth it? What are the pro's and cons? I understand that this would involve a lot of changes to the chassis setup too. Any ideas from people who have already done the same?

This is the gist of my wishlist. Another important thisng is the funding involved for the procedure By the looks of it, all of these mods will cost me something in the region on 40k, correct me if i'm wrong. I obviously cannot shell out all of this in bulk. Global recession an all

So my question is, in what order would it be advisable for me to amke these modifications? Should focus on the chassis modifications first and attack the engine last? Or should it be the other way around?

Also I have already been through the familiar argument, "Why the hell don't you go in for a new bike you F%^&*n A**hole??!!"

But then I just grin and people understand that maniacal grin on my face. She was my first bike and i'm not prepared to let her go, instead I want to give her a fresh leash of life. She means a lot to me guys, so please guide me.

    Thanks in advance

        Ans:
1). May be you could go in for the 220 front fork setup, should be a little easier to modify, the 200 setup would be a better option IMO.

2). Go in for the tubeless tires, the P200 spec should be a better choice.Go for it!

3). The P200 block setup can be installed, many guys here in mumbai have done it. The P220 setup seems tough.

4). Leave it the way it is, it looks much better that way.

5). HID's? for a P180, Are u sure? Coz i thought HIDs are compatible with bikes running on DC current.

        6). Dont do it!

          hey ripper,

Thanks for the help. And yeah HID's can be fixed onto the UG3. With some tweaks to the electricals. The HID is connected to the battery directly. I am not too aware about the exact process though.

^ the link contents are not viewable mate.

@niranjan: now this thread is something personal for me too... ok so...

Tyre: anything below 110 for the rear is hassle free. i had/am experimented with a 110/70-17 tyre (Picasa Web Albums - Shadez - Autoz) but had to bend the swingarm a bit and that becomes a problem when riding with pillion.
i suggest p200 tyres ... zappers... they are cheap and good.

engine: i had talked to Venu sir bout it. right said, the 200 kit is a retrofit. and 220 can also be fitted easily. i suggest 200 kit here mate.

HID: well very much possible. for 4k you can get a H4 good one easily. i have a H7 8000k dual HID (Picasa Web Albums - Shadez - Autoz). no problems with heating or battery drain. but problem is, my digi display went kaput twice and now bike runs without it. also, the normal bulb in the kit also stopped working sometime back and i cant get that replaced from nowhere.
Dome: I am searching for a dome/holder fog lamp kinda stuff so i can get HID fitted into that which can be used only when needed and getting back to normal bulbs in the dome. only HID is a sure cop magnet.

              Shocks: dont do it man.

              now my q's to you:
              KN and NGK,
how much do they cost, any problem in getting them fitted and is it worth the effort, or atleast problem free?

I saw that profile last week... they are freaking crazy... amazing stunters..what pics they have on their profiles dude...
however i liked this Pulsar with the apache headlights. I wonder how the pulsar will look with the FZ-16's head assembly.

                        @ Shadez,

thanks for all the inputs bro, well received! As for NGK and K&N here goes, NGK is simply not worth it. No difference in performance here, apparently the tip having iridium is supposed to help combustion at higher revs by giving a more precise spark. But to be frank, ever since i fitted the NGk on my bike, milaege has taken a beating from 42 to almost 35. I intend on getting back to stock.

As for K&N, i act had better mileage than the stock air filter box! But since a I run a lean mixture since then, I have not upjetted, my bike always feels too harsh. But the sounds that fills your ears when you open that throttle and let her rip is pure music buddy K&N is only for the noise, especially without upjetting it is similar to a cosmetic mod I love the noise my bike makes with the K&N but now i am looking for more buddy.

Having serious thoughts of the engine mod, but i am more into the 220 block for the extra power.

What brand HID's would be good for H4? I'm in chennai, so any suggestions wrt to the shop etc would be great.

                        Thanks in advance mate

                          @ Copla@180,

I got the NGK at Hardeeps for 1000/- (for both). Thanks for the pics man. The Apache dome on the pulsar is a little too loud for me. The rear is brilliant though.

You cannot just attribute the drop in mileage to shifting to NGK's. There could be other reasons for it too.....

I've been using NGK's for the past 27K kms now, I can say that there is no drop in performance and mileage.

PS: For HID's go to Hardeep's only!
