I really don't know whether one can use a ups battery or not but this is the first time that i am hearing someone even thinking/suggesting a ups battery in a bike .. but if u want info abt the ups battery .. i recently replaced the battery of my ups with an exide 7ah battery for 700 bucks.
i wanted to know if anyone here has done a long roadtrip on an extreme ..coz till now the max distance that i covered in a single day was around 150 km(i don't drive much .did 10700km in over 2 years
) .. and even when i go continuously for a dist of about 40-50 km .. i get a slight back ache .. what could be the reason ? i haven't got my shocks adjusted at all .. i'm 5'10" and weigh 75 kgs.
guys..if you ever need blood or want to donate blood, please refer to this site :

^^^ what makes it an UPS battery? just the fact that it is selected to be used in an UPS???
UPSes use maintenance free batteries and many cars and some bike come factory fitted with maintenance free batteries. The job of a battery is to charge itself from teh voltage supplied and deliver the power to the electrical equippment. If your input and output values fall in place, use ANY battery - shouldn't make a difference.
My thought only. Not fuel for those who want to argue about STOCK and Company Recommended stuff.

I asked coz this was the first time that i heard of it .. did anyone try it yet ? ?
yeah .. i didn't know that one can use a battery meant for a ups in a bike / car as well.
doubt : when we have a such an option why aren't the bikes fitted with these ?guys..if you ever need blood or want to donate blood, please refer to this site :

I'm considering UPS batteries only because I don't want to touch Exide or Amco... and you went and bought a @#$%& Exide when so many better brands are available for UPS batteries??Originally posted by kaka View PostI really don't know whether one can use a ups battery or not but this is the first time that i am hearing someone even thinking/suggesting a ups battery in a bike .. but if u want info abt the ups battery .. i recently replaced the battery of my ups with an exide 7ah battery for 700 bucks.

Back ache... exactly the same happens to me. If I do more than 30 - 40 km at a stretch on my CBZ-X, I get it. Never happened on my Shogun.
Nopes dude... as I said, I wish it were that simple. For starters, UPS batts are deep cycle batteries. Cranking batteries are not! Also, the conditions a battery encounters on a vehicle are different from what it encounters in a UPS sitting at home/office. So for this and other reasons, using a UPS battery is pretty much a non-standard fitment. But after seeing so many people using them successfully, I'm inclined to try... as now I'm VERY scared of having those HORRIBLE Exides and Amcos in my bike. And nobody else seems to be making 7 Ah batteries, save Speed. But Speed is from the same group that makes Amco... so I'm sceptical.Originally posted by HydBiker View Post^^^ what makes it an UPS battery? just the fact that it is selected to be used in an UPS???

It may very well be because manufacturers want you to buy more expensive automotive batteries... lol! But who knows! All I can say is that I'v never heard anything adverse about them after putting them in a bike. In fact they seem to last way longer.Originally posted by kaka View PostI asked coz this was the first time that i heard of it .. did anyone try it yet ? ?

Nopes. Actually UPS batteries are not exactly classified as maintainence free, according to the definition by battery industry. They are totally sealed... so they are zero maintainence in the true sense. Secondly, sealed automotive valve regulated lead acid batteries like from Amaron / BOSCH are usually li'l more expensive than normal maintainence free batteries, but the UPS batteries are not! UPS batteries are cheaper than then normal maintaintence free batteries we use.Originally posted by HydBiker View PostMaintenance free batteries are more expensive.
Hope this clears the fog a bit.Last edited by Raccoon; 07-23-2009, 09:48 PM.

^^^ Rightly said Raccoon. I think there is more to it for using UPS batteries in bikes. The charging voltages should be matching and other specifications also should match or else the electricals of the bike will go for a toss.
Amco has done great damage to my bike. The deposits on the terminal seems to have corroded them. Now my new battery doesn't seem to be charging up because of that. The lights and horn have gone down in their intensity. Will they replace the terminals under warranty? CBZ has three year warranty dunno if it applies to stuff other than engine.Imperfect human knowledge may be a bumpy, pot-holed street but its the only road to wisdom worth taking . . .

A friend of mine told me that exide is fine coz he's been using it in car for many years without any problem .. so i went ahead and brought it .. also i couldnt get other company batteries so had to go for this.
Could that backache be due to too stiff shocks or riding position ?guys..if you ever need blood or want to donate blood, please refer to this site :

@Raccoon: Amco acid leaked all over my Fiero F2's swingarm too! It needs to be repainted, but I have ignored it. It didn't even last properly inspite of charging/topping up distilled water every 2 months.
I am now considering the Amaron sealed 12V 2.5A battery for Rs.700. I think the 5A one should cost you about 1000 bucks. The shopkeeper was telling me 30 months replacement warranty&total 60 months warranty!
Btw, it looks like they are the only ones making sealed batteries for bikes!Quench my thirst with gasoline!

Charging voltages match, I guess. You can easily confirm that - it should be mentioned on the UPS battery or on its box or in its manual.Originally posted by hegdeanoop View Post^^^ Rightly said Raccoon. You should definitely take this up with Hero Honda. I have, and they have promised to fix it the paint and all. Right now its raining almost non stop here, so I'v not follewed it up myself... but will do it asap. If everyone does this, they will have to wake up and take notice and stop providing such rotten batteries.
And guys, before blaming the battery, always make sure that distilled water is never filled above the MAX mark by the service guys and always attach a properly routed drain tube. Filling above the MAX mark can not only ruin the bike but also the battery itself.
You need to recharge your new SF immediately. The longer you keep it in partially discharged conditioins, the lesser its life is going to be.
Exide no longer makes good batteries. However, some of them are ok. Your friend must have been lucky to get a better one. Problem is Exide is by far the easiest to get. But if you want better stuff, you should be ready to hunt a bit. Easiest is to contact the company. They should help you get one... may even offer home delivery. So don't get stuck with whats easily available.Originally posted by kaka View PostA friend of mine told me that exide is fine coz he's been using it in car for many years without any problem .. so i went ahead and brought it .. also i couldnt get other company batteries so had to go for this.

Yes, BOSCH batts are very likely made by Amaron... however that does not mean they are the same. Either way, both are supposed to be good. Sealed batts are great for those who want to neglect their batts... but may not be the best for extreme conditions. Base Terminal seems great too. Been using that on my Shogun for almost 6 months. Does not leak a drop of acid. No sign of vapour even! This in spite of it having electrolyte filled over the MAX mark (by the dealer).Originally posted by Sarvajit View PostRavi said Bosch is also selling under Amaron name it seems!
Yes, Amaron has 30 + 30 months warranty which is probably the highest available. Don't know what kind of warranty BOSCH offers.Originally posted by Sarvajit View Post@Raccoon: Amco acid leaked all over my Fiero F2's swingarm too! It needs to be repainted, but I have ignored it. You should have taken the matter up with the dealer and with TVS directly to get the battery damage fixed.

@Raccoon: Too late, coz my bike itself is 5 years old!
Anyways, one update on the sealed batteries-Aasheesh (underpowerkelvinator78) got a sealed Exide battery for his CBZ Xtreme for Rs.1200 recently.
So now we have 3-4 options in sealed batteries.Quench my thirst with gasoline!
