General information on chains and sprockets

Hi.. I'm new to xBHP.com and i just wanted to have an exact idea on chains and sprockets. Moreover i own a 30 months old Honda Unicorn which has clocked around 23000 Km.s . It's running well but i think it's time to change the chain n sprocket set. So, i just wanted to know whether can i go for a custom combination of chain n sprocket rather than going for a stock one??

I thought the query had already been answered before hence i deleted it

        anyways

Increase in no of teeth in front sprocket=Taller gearing, easier crusing, theoratically higher topspeed.

Decrease in no of teeth in front sprocket=Shorter gearing, better acceleration, lower topspeed as bike will redline at lower speeds.

Increase in no of teeth in rear sprocket=Shorter gearing(stunters use those hughe rear sprockets)

Decrease in no of teeth in rear sprocket=Taller gearing

15/43 is stock.. Keep it the same Yaar..
            Trust me!

Uni has got a lame low range, but it has got very good mid rang and high range,so keep it on the same, stock combination..
increasing or decreasing the size will over kill the performance!

sproket change for my Apache 150

Guys, am basically a tourer..ride atleast 700kms a week...So after reading through this topic on Sprokets, i find that a taller gearing will help me in making my ride a lot easier...the sproket size of my apache Front/rear- 13T/43T

so a front sproket with more number of teeth will help increase my top end right??
and if am changing, i will change the entire chain and sproket set...

so i have shortlisted these ones..which one would be a direct fit and which would be the best choice for my Apache 150???...

              1)Pulsar 150 dts-i 15T/44T
              2)Pulsar 180 dtsi- 15T/43T
              3)TVS Fiero F2- 14T/40T

              need your suggestion guys...

                This should be your choice.

this will result in a big loss in Acceleration , and bike may not Rev till redline in 5th gear which may result in reduced top speed.

i would recommend just changing rear sprocket from 43 to 40,not the front one

Akshay is Quite Right Here, Reducing the Rear by 3 Teeths will be a better option and Cheap Too..

                    • Hi, I am planning to change the sprocket in my Pulsar 200 for more acceleration. I need to fit a larger rear sprocket for this right? What size sprocket can I go in for without changing the chain? I have read elsewhere that the ZMA 40 tooth is a direct fit, but can I use this with my existing chain?

Also, I know that the decreasing the front one will also result in better acceleration, but which 1 is recommended, decreasing front or increasing rear?

The ZMA rear sprocket is in indeed a direct fit and prolly the best option for you.

But if you do go for this option, do exercise some control. Too much of hard revving will screw the crank. This has happened to a 200 running with the 40T sprocket.

Check out the P180 UG4 sprocket, It comes with 14/39 and is direct fit..

whats the no of teeth on P200's rear sprocket?
                              if Zma one's fits 200 then 200 one's should fit Zma,right?
                              and what about the chain?

P200's sprocket has 38 teeth. P180 UG4 has 39 teeth. P220 has 37 teeth. New P220 UG2 has 36 teeth. ZMA has 40. All have same pitch, so are inter-fittable.

But, beyond the extent of more than 2 teeth change, one usually gets chain changed...
Under 2 teeth, one can adjust the chain play mechanism to fit it correctly.

I remember, when I had a custom 40 teeth on my P180 UG3, it was quite loose despite adjustments, due to 3 teeth less from stock.

Remember bro, on the IDEAL setting, the lower part of chain should have chain play, upto 1 inch. Hope this data helps.
