  • [Ownership Thread]: Discover 100 DTSi

    Hi everyone.

Since Bajaj silently introduced the Discover 100 DTS-i after phasing out the Discover 100 DTS-Si, I thought it'd be appropriate to start a fresh thread for this model, cause its different from the previous model's (4 Speed and DTS-i). To discuss various aspects of the bike, be it reviews, issues, experiences and what not, as long as its related to out beloved Discover 100 DTS-i.

    Changes considering previous models.

Discover 100(Original) - The DTS-i Engine and all design/electrical updates of the DTS-Si model except for the transmission.
Discover 100 DTS-Si - Shifted to DTS-i and dropped back to 4 Speed.

    My story

I love and ride a Black 2011 ZMA, but recently had to move to Bangalore for higher studies. I intended to take my ZMA with me, but parents were'nt comfortable with the fact that I'd be riding India's best sports tourer thanks to a couple of my previous endeavours, hence they suggested I get a commuter with a decent mileage / liter.

First preference was the almighty Platina 100, but after a TD it didnt seem so fine, it made power just off idle, but the glory soon ended and I was left with a puzzled look on my face, thats when they offered the Discover 100 DTS-i for a TD, the bike didnt have as much thump as the Platina, but the power was well spread across the rev range and I guess thats why the lack of another gear wasnt felt.

So it was final, the payment was made, I refused accessories like tank cover and seat cover, and instead went for ladies grip, buzzer and side pannier box. The final OTR amount was Rs.52410 + Rs.50 for some postal stuff.

Next thing to do was choose the bike, I went in and saw a few color varieties, but my mom liked the new golden/gree/grey/whateverthehell color which changed shades depending on the source of light, hence I decided to go with it. I turned on all the bikes there and listened to the engine note, and then went with one which had 2.5Kms on the ODO.

Now coming to the delivery part of my story. I insisted that I myself will ride the bike for registration and they accepted, and asked me to be there by 11:00 am tomorrow morning, thus the wait continues..........

I assume the Discover 100T and 100 Dtsi are different motorcycles??? Please clarify, coz Bajaj does a fantastic job of confusing me in this segment

The Discover 100 DTS-i was a fast one pulled by Bajaj, no one knew about it, and as a matter of fact even their official website confuses you. It's different from the Discover 100T.

What Bajaj has done is silently phase out the Discover 100 DTS-Si 5 Speed, and replace it with the DTS-i 4 Speed. The purpose I believe is to reduce production costs, cause the motor and transmission of the bike are the same as the Discover 100T's i.e upto the barrel, after which the 4 Valve head of the 100T was swapped with a regular 2 Valve head.

Now regarding the cosmetics of the bike, it looks just like the Discover 100 DTS-Si and is also available in the weird green/yellow/gold/whateverthehell color (The one I got.)

In the pic you can see the Discover 100T on top and the Discover 100 DTS-i's engine in the bottom. Hope I've cleared your confusion.

        Re: Discover 100 DTSi

It's been a while, bike has clocked 1.3k kms as of now.

Run in was based on the motoman methode with a few changes of my own. First oil change at 200kms(Valvoline Champion 20w40), second at 400kms(Motul 300v Factory Line).

Today I took le bike out for its first long trip, Kollam to Bangalore, a total of 720kms. Speeds varied from a mere 40kmph to all the way to 85kmph. On the highways the lack of another gear is felt, and especially since the engine hits the limiter in 4th gear. The tps is abit clumsy, and the change in timing can be clearly felt. Well that's it.

          Re: Discover 100 DTSi

Hey guys, been a while. I rode the bike back from Bangalore to Kollam, around 2 Months back, parents were pissed and didnt let me take the bike back to Bangalore(Cause I had'nt received the RC), and I had to go by bus. Skipping forward, came back home on 24th, and started riding from 26th,
          1. 400Kms; Kollam > Kovalam > Kanyakumari > Tirunelveli > Tenkasi > Aryankavu > Kollam.
          2. 150Kms; Kollam > Trivandrum > Kollam.

The bikes odo read is a bit above 3k kms now. And is running on Shell AX5 for the past 1k kms. The oil is really good considering the price, and I'll be keeping it for the next Kollam > Bangalore > Kollam trip.

          Query:
@psr sir, can I upgrade the lighting to 55/60? The bike has an AC setup.

Oh what did i see? An air filter getting washed in washing machine.
                Right?

That drained oil still looks good. How many kms you did with that oil?

Well in terms of looks stock seat is better. How much comfortable is your custom seat? How good it felt on long rides?

I too own Discover 5 speed. 1.5 years old. 9.5k on odo. Did long rides 400kms+. I will soon post some pics.

That's the Motul 300V Factory Line, costs close to 1k. I was planning on using it for a really long time, but my friend rode the bike for like 50kms or so, and the oil started crapping out. And this was after I've done over 1k kms continuous riding on it. This bike is mainly used for my Kollam <=> Bangalore commute, hence I always go for the best oil available. Currently running on Shell AX5, its cool. Will change to AX7 before hitting bangalore, i.e If am able to source it.

The stock definitely looks better, this is for comfort, cause you cant expect a person to ride close to 800kms at a stretch on that thing. Ive got it today morning, will be going to Bangalore on 4th morning, will post review after that.

Mines the Discover 100 4G i.e DTSi 4 Speed. It was bought on November 1st if am not mistaken, but the bike was ridden only for a couple of days, ODO shows a bit above 3k kms.
Looking forward to the pics. Its nice to see Discover people bonding, cause before this I used to ride a ZMA, and there we had alot of participation and idea exchanges.

Changed the normal bulbs to leds. Console looks bright n white.

                      LED pilot lamps.

                      Other modifications:
Replaced stock 35w bulb with 55/60w xtreme vision as electricals are already DC.
                      Twin horns of different frequencies.

I wish mine was also DC, I intend to upgrade the lighting, but it required changing the stator and and rr, so will keep it aside for a while now.

Im not much of a cleaning type, but might give it a shot before taking it to B'lore. And can ya explain about the dual horns? Are they from the P220? And how did you connect them?

Out of the 2 horns, one is stock(2A) and the other is Roots(3A). As the both are of different frequencies, they sound good like pulsars and even louder. Both are mounted in same place as stock. They are connected in 'Parallel'.
This is much reliable setup. I am using it since a year and never went off.
(The other way of connection is relay setup.)

In series circuit, voltage will be distributed equally (6v+6v) while current will remain same 5A across both.
In parallel, voltage will be same 12v across both while current be distributed equally (2.5A +2.5A).
So i made it parallel. Never tried series.
Relay setup directly draws current from battery hence it will honk louder.
I had roots installed with relay on my 8.5yrs old Activa. Unfortunately, one horn got weak after few years. The other one is mounted on my bike.
Its some 6-7 years old, so i don't remember its cost.
