WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD.Originally posted by prakash_mvpa View Postyesterday went to kochin city and returned back.total of around 85kms.lot of clutch usage in city traffic which is verry high since it is evening
.then the engine felt hot obviously.I rode the bike at a constant 40-45kmph with occasional 50kmph in slops and while overtaking slow tipper lorries.
Problem :While I stopped in a roadside "hotel"(dhaba) and kick started it back ,then there is that patakha sound from the silencer for the *first* time.what went wrong?
then ,after reaching my house at around 9PM ,I just researched what is wrong.
1) oil leak from the engine - to be precise between the head and barrel meeting point where we got a gasket which is recently changed
.leak is not that bad though.a slight leak - must say.
2) gear box also shit out some grease/oil from the box joints.it was already tightened.
3) carburater - I had to use choke during the day twice for the starting up(not cold start).
4) cam sound is now accustomed with.still ,I doubt whether this oil leak has got something to do with cam?
5) mileage is roughly 32-35kmpl now!
What say guys?engine got hot too soon during traffic.I can touch timing chain box cover for 1-2 sec maximum when was in city.
downshifting gear was very tough as gear became stiff to change.but works for upshift fine.
front drum brake is not effective much.if I press maximum ,then there is some "locking" kind of effect.and then I have to manually push the brake lever up
!
waiting for suggestions guys !
will reply about all this soon do post up at what speeds did you do the trip...|NO WHEELS|

yeah.I am following 40-45kmph to maximum 50kmph.many times inside the city.
although with this troubles(I dont feel like that!) ,I can kickstart my bullet on cold mornings in 3 or 4 kicks(except when the fuel goes near reserve!) and use of de-compression lever.
Regarding CAM -as you know - I have changed valveguides to bronze ones and running-in for next 3000kms along with - tappets are purposely left a little loose for next 3000kilometers with a slight tighten up job on first 1000kms.cams are left as is to automatically set up with friction by running 3K kms before it automagically fixes up.mech is against Adjustable cam spindle.Last edited by prakash_mvpa; 10-05-2008, 10:15 PM.

Bike: Royal Enfield Bullet Electra 4speed
year: 2007 (new)
KMs: 13600 KMs
Breakdowns so far:
1.changed rear tail light bulb after an idiot banged me from rear
2. front shock absorber oil valve changed after it broke from continous rides on Thane Belapur road to office. Fairly Expensive and not covered in warranty period
3. Warranty period change of battery free of cost after it broke in first servicing
4. Silencer dent and front foot rest rod repaired after fall during climbing the summit of Kamshet Tower Hill
5. hand brake switch changed twice since brake light was always on due to hand brake's switch - not in warranty period.
No other problems - serviced regularly - engine oil change after 1500 to 2000 KMS - smooth ride.
Highest speed achieved - with pillion and my Cramster saddlebags loaded - touched 110 KMPH on Thane-Bhiwandi bypass towards Thane - full throttle.
I have done only so much KMs because I was off riding after last years arm fracture (office indoor accident
) for 4 months and then didn't do any rides this year's monsoon as it is no longer fun to be filthy

Hi Prakash!Originally posted by prakash_mvpa View Postnice ! esp 535 lightning ! I heard it got a better oil pump too
Well, yes the 535 has bigger oil pumps, which helps in better oil flow, neccessarily required for the higher compression & higher cubic capacity engine of the Lightning.
And I am sorry for my ignorance man, I didn't read your recent posts due to workload, & hence couldn't reply back, but then the leak that you are talking of is due to the gasket only provided the oil is not flowing down from some other place, like in the head.
As for the "phatak" sound, I don't seem to have much idea about it, although I remember Deep having a similar incident with his bike. But then just as an approximation, it could be pre-ignition, due to heating.
And for heating, you don't have to check the left side, check the right side, the timing cover, the side where the oil pump is located. What I can understand is that you are checking the primary chain cover. That tends to get pretty hot due to excessive clutch usage, but then the engine temparature can be gauged approximately by touching the timing cover.
Take care.

Hey man, as for the gearbox, yes there are leaks, & one can see oily leaks (very minor) but only from around the kick lever, or a little bit from the bold down under it. Apart from it, the cover doesn't leak much. So, it was a good thing that you got it all tightened.
As for carburettor problem, the use of choke even when engine is hot is required when the mixture is lean, I had a similar problem in my bike once, but changing the settings did the job for me.
Take care.
Let us know what suffices.

Hi Prakash!Originally posted by prakash_mvpa View Postthanks for the replies.now ,the engine oil leakage problem is solved.bull is almost fine.even I am accustomed to it
Hey man, good to know that the bike is now running fine, but then what was the problem actually, what did your mechanic say about that "phatak" sound that you spoke of?
Take care.
Do let us know about he had to say.

no.that sound never came again.some days after that incident ,I gave the bike for service.mech tightened the tappets to the needed ,cleaned carburetor.
the reason he said is ,the bike has got new valves and tappet guides of bronze and it needs time to set properly.and carburater settings was too lean.this in turn ,made the engine hot.
oh! and I procured one "neutral switch" from enfield spares distributor in cochin(J.R.N -opp to manavatti silks padma mg road).changed the leaking old switch for the new one.this solved the occassional 4-5 drops of dark oil on the floor.
because ,the neutral swith is connected with clutch case and the old neutral switch had worn out lead to the oil leak.
Still - there is a slight oil leak from the gasket where cylinder and head meets(forgot the name
) .it wont come normally.but if I revved up more than 50kmph to 60 ,a slight oil leak comes.and the mechanic sunny chettan said - it will be fixed when the bull finishes the 3000kms "running-in" for new bronze valve guides.
.
oh! and the mechanics here are not so well opined about the "adjustable cam spindle" .they says ,it works only for new cam gears on a brand new motorcycle.
Mech asked me to ride the bike at 45kmph at max.but in "narrow" NH47 highway with heavy traffic ,I needed at least 50kmph speed and occassionaly took 60kmph to overtake slow trailors
.I explained this to mechanic afterwards ,and He said no problem for now.but dont take the bike revved up for the remaining 2000kms to complete 3000kms after the service to check for valve seating.I left the bike there and went home actually.
now -I went for a trip to coimbatore after that on 16th. there is no engine heating up or phat sounds.engine seems settled in my hands
.it runs smooth WITHOUT break for almost 5.30 hours apart from a 10minute chai break in trichur bypass.
I would like to know ,which bike can go like this? - almost continuous for 5.30 hours riding!.bike is not getting hot.it feels at home on highways ,even through ghat sections.

Another Bullet!!Originally posted by prakash_mvpa View PostI would like to know ,which bike can go like this?
Prakash, What abt your headlight upgrade to 55/60? Is yours a clearlens headlamp? do share any info on it.
reg Adjustable spindles, new ones have those (Info from RE brandstore service guys). Changing cam gears with spindle might give better results it being mating componenets. Shall find out soon how 'Adjustables' fare on new cycle. bye.,Last edited by rennjie; 10-19-2008, 03:44 PM.

hai!nice to see you here!
.
regarding light ,I have to inquire more reg the same.
adjustable cam spindle are made by some mechanic in Iringalakuda(Trichur) and distributed.but ,now he is not in business it seems.
I knew that new machines comes with adj. cam spindles default.
for older machines ,using a new set of cam gears and adjustable spindle may not fit properly reason being the timing chain cover got some difference in specification
.may be we need to grind some length off .
This is ,as per another bulleteer here
.and mech is saying ,there is no need for spending 1000's for a brand new cam+spindle set.there are other ways without destructing the original setup - like oversize spindle or adding bushes to stop the play.
- and some freaky mechs will do some other trick(not recommended) - they cut the spindle hole bigger to add another arrangement.

Hey man, good to know that things are good now with the bike & they will stay good. Your mechanic seems to be a good one, because he seems to start from the most basic things first when sorting an issue.
Anyways, about the "phatak" sound, now I am sure that it was because of pre-ignition, & this was mainly because of a lean mixture. Good it was just the issue of the carburettor settings.
As for the adjustable spindles, man, I might be wrong but then the cam gear designs are essentially the same in the old cast iron engines. I can say so because my bike has the adjustable ones, & my bike is a 2004 Electra, & yours is of the year 2005. I only got the spindles changed & not the cam gears. I would say that the only advantage of using adjustable spindles is that they help in overcoming cam gear backlash.
But then I would also suggest, don't upset the mechanic (hehe), & even with the normal ones (non-adjustable), the bike would do fine.
Well, the bike that can run straight for 6 hours, maybe many other bikes, even a Karizma can do that, but then I can vouch for the Bullet. The only clause is that the bike is well-maintained, which I am sure yours is & is in good hands, so be rest assured. But then, like your mechanic suggests, keep it low, 50kmph is ok, & occassional bursts to 60kmph are also fine, rather I would say needed, but bursts only, lasting maybe a few secs. So, don't worry about that.
Take care.
Happy thumping,
Prakhar
