Yamaha benifits in terms of title sponsor, and marketing potential. (Money & Fame)
Rossi gets a competitive bike to try and win some races.
rossi will be no.-2 and lorenzo no.-1, we can safely infer that rossi's bike will be slightly less competitive than lorenzo.
there was a hand from above which made this re-marriage possible. its clear.

With some guys missing, it's a great chance for the likes of Stefan Bradl , Valentino Rossi , Alvaro Bautista & Ben Spies to get grab some extra points. And guys if stoner happens to miss a good portion of the remainder of the season, is Honda allowed to replace him with a satellite rider? And what will karel Abraham be riding next season?

You don't seriously think that their engineers will detune or somehow make the bike slower? Imagine Rossi letting that happen. They have their own race engineers to set up the bike according to riders preference. Yeah, I agree in some rare case when only single new parts are available, preference are given to No. 1. But the rest, it's up to riders and engineers to setup the bikes as best as they can.

Yep, Even there's difference between the #1 bike and the spare bike.(Read this a long time ack in some mag)

It would be up to Yamaha to give Rossi the bike,not necessarily the best bike.
About ben, its not just bad luck.Things can be staged.(Brief personal Experience
