  • Petrol prices hiked by Rs. 3 per litre

Oil major Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited has announced a hike in petrol prices by Rs. 2.95 per litre, following a spike in international crude oil prices.

The hike would be effective from Tuesday midnight. This would be the sixth price hike after petrol price deregulation.

Other two state-run refiners Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) will also hike petrol prices by Rs. 2.40 - 2.95 per litre from Thursday, sources told NDTV.

The state-run refiners had on November 9 raised petrol price by Rs. 0.32 per litre to Rs. 52.91 a litre in Delhi.

Since June 26, when petrol price was deregulated, IOC, BPCL and HPCL have revised rates six times as crude oil has jumped from $73-74 per barrel at the time of deregulation to the current levels of $90 a barrel.

IOC and other state retailers Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) are losing Rs. 4.17 per litre on selling petrol as raw material (crude oil) cost has climbed to $90 per barrel.

A similar hike in diesel rates is likely to be considered by an Empowered Group of Ministers headed by Pranab Mukherjee on December 22.

The basket of crude oil India buys was at $89.34 per barrel on Monday. It has averaged $88.47 per barrel in December as against about $79 a barrel at the time of last hike in petrol price on November 9.

On diesel, the three firms are losing about Rs. 5 a litre. A fuel price hike was planned after the winter session of Parliament ended on December 13. The last hike in petrol price on November 9 had happened just before the winter session of Parliament began.

If prices are not revised, IOC, BPCL and HPCL are likely to end the fiscal with close to Rs. 67,000 crore revenue loss on sale of diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene below cost. The oil retailers lose Rs. 272.19 on the sale of every 14.2-kg LPG cylinder and Rs. 17.72 per litre of kerosene.

Well mate, this has got nothing to do with elections. If there are international crude prices going up, the government cannot subsidize for long and give you cheaper rates on fuel. It also creates unnecessary pressure on the state- run fuel marketing companies.

Now crude has jumped from 73 to 90 and the prices have been hiked. What remains to be seen is whether the petrol prices would be rolled back if the crude comes down to 73!

The tax on fuel is a different issue altogether thou

Its still subsidised in India, which, in my opinion is a criminal mistake in the first place, coz we do not value or appreciate it, but just complain.

Well...well.... They could cut down the taxes which are more than 50% on the petroleum products.

Suppose if the petrol price per litre in Chennai is Rs 51.90, here the break-up of cost calculated by the government:
                    • Basic Price = Rs 21.93
                    • Excise duty = Rs 14.35
                    • Education Tax = Rs 0.43
                    • Dealer commission = Rs 1.05
                    • VAT = Rs 5.5
                    • Crude Oil Custom duty = Rs 1.1
                    • Petrol Custom = Rs 1.54
                    • Transportation Charge = Rs 6.00
                    • Total price = Rs 51.90

Now, if you cut down the taxes even by 10% then you caould easily attain a drastic change in petrol and diesel costs.

                        Thanks.
Mate, as i said the tax on fuel is a different issue
I could ask where all these taxes are going too. Well if was able to find that out, i would be a genius.
Btw India is not the only country where the tax component in petrol retail price is greater than 50%. Most of the developed countries like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, South Korea have greater taxes on it.

Since the revenue from taxes is used for budget projections and other stuff, a variable based tax rate on fuel (reducing taxes when the prices of fuel go up so that the price remains almost constant) would be an unviable solution and would actually put the government in a spot. So let the market forces determine the consumption.

If it gets too high, ppl would consume less fuel and focus more on green fuels. Green technology is the future and the higher prices would only aid in their development faster. Thats one silver lining on a high fuel price

As said before, the only thing that we should wait for is when the crude falls and see if the prices are rolled back. This would determine if the market based petroleum pricing mechanism is a farce
