  • Finally : 848 evo in arctic white silk!!

this thread seems to be long overdue, but since i was occupied with work, thought might as well jot down a few things today.

few might remember me looking out for a used MV Agusta from quiet sometime. since there weren't any decent ones available - i decided to go for the next best thing.

Got myself a Ducati 848 evo in arctic white silk.

The bike got delivered on the 29th of March 2012 and ohhhh boyy!! am i in love.

Just thought it would be nice to pen down my first one week with the bike.

to start with - it looks stunningly beautiful. had a friend's 07 R1 and 08 600RR parked with me from over a month and I strongly believed that they were indeed beautiful bikes. But the Ducati changed the game, the rules and the standards altogether!!

The ducati looks like a piece of art which has been designed while keeping only onething in mind "God is in the details" !!
where as the japs now look like an attempt to finish the project (or homework) in the given timeline!!
everything looks plain jane on the Japs now.
Before anyone starts pelting stones at me, trust me for this - you have to see them together to know what i am talking about. and i've been in love with simple lines that the japs drew from god knows when - but after seeing them all together - now i know what the word sexy actually means.

please do pardon the comparison but now the japs look somewhat like rakhi sawant. sexy at a glance, but fugly when you look at them properly. the ducati on the other hand can be compared to chitrangada singh - looks sexy at a glance and oooohh yeaahhhhhh looks sexy when you stare at all the details too!!!

now coming straight to the right report

there might be few things i might be expecting more from the ducati as i had been riding the 600rr almost everyday and the r1 every now and then. so first i would start off with the negatives

the biggest design flaw with the 848 evo is that when you turn the handle completely (any of the side - while taking a u-turn) your hand fouls with the fairing. this gets a bit irritating. the only way is hold the handle from the outer most side while turning. you do that - and you are good !!

the l-twin isn't the sweetest sounding thing around and it turns a bit more sour when all the other bikers with you are riding inline fours with really nice sounding after market silencers!! but then i some how love the clatter of the l-twin. that was my primary reason (after not getting a good MV) to go for a ducati as I was kind of bored of the similar (predictable = boring) sounding inline fours. all the inline fours sound similar. you change the silencer to get more bass or treble or maybe make it breathe fire. though they sound great!!! but they always sound the same.
you ride the ducati (which in my humble opinion sounds a bit similar to a tractor) at lower speeds and it makes you think whether you committed a mistake by buying this - and believe you me these thoughts pound on you like crazy when you ride at low speeds with those freakish japs that sound great but then everything changes the moment you are riding above 60kmph. the tractor's noise turns into music before you know it.
and you know what the best part is?? when you de-accelerate the 848 sounds like a cracker!! and i mean it!! those booom booooom boom kind of noise - you know what i mean right!!

another vice with the bike is the aggressive riding position. you have to relearn how to ride!! this bike can give anyone sore palms and aching shoulders and pain in the knee (the last one only if you are 6 feet +). but then i'm still learning and like with everything new that you learn you do hit a few difficulties. in short NO PAIN - NO GAIN!!

the seat's hard!! very hard. and the aggressive riding posture doesn't help either. add to it the under seat exhaust doesn't seem to be well insulated (or maybe it's just the summer heat) so your "tashreef" does get hot a lot!!

    now the positives :

    1. it's a ducati!!!
    2. has a great torque range (in the league of cb1000r / r1)(or so it feels)
    3. everything on the bike will show you how form and factor can live in harmony. so if anyone ever tells you that something is ugly because of practical reasons - kick them hard on the butt and show them a ducati - so that they know that to make a thing work you need not make it ugly.
    4. not necessarily a good thing - but this is an attention grabber for sure!!
    5. single sided swing arm!! you have to see it parked next to any other jap to know how beautiful it actually is.
    6. the music it starts playing after 60kmph - pure bliss!!

the pictures will follow soon as i've not been able to click any as everytime i get back home - it's later in the evening & to be honest i don't have the patience for it right now!! i end up hopping on it and taking it out for a ride!!

Congrats Sam. Nice to read that you finally are in love again and she's Italian too

Wishing you many happy miles on the duc. I've seen the 848 in white and she's a real teaser. Looks like Catherine Zeta Jones draped in a thin white gown.

Any plans to plonk in a set of termi's on the bike?

Hopefully you dont face any issues from the company with the way they are running things. All the best mate and keep revvin.

Can totally relate and imagine to the above mentioned part of your write up . Still, for many like me who are miles apart from getting such a beauty, please take out some time and post some scintillating pics of your babe.

Happy riding and ride safe brother!

Congrats buddy on the beauty ? Imho, 848 looks best in white , have a friend who painted the under belly part white as well, looks nice.
I agree with you , the sound it makes while on the move and decelerating is simply awesome , get termis on and you would love it at idle as well plus the popping sound while slowing down will make you giggle like a 16 year old girl.
848 might have lot of flaws for which I did not buy one, but there is not one day where I want one in my garage .
Enjoy your new found love, it will treat you better than any MV would.
drive safely... if not for you then for the sake of others!!

Just an after thought, the popping sound on deceleration, does it not mean the bike is running rich ?

                      Congratulations man.
I love the 848 in white. Stunning it looks.
About the ergos, I have the same thoughts as you do. Its an all out race bike. Very extreme ergos. But I think over time you will get accustomed to it, esp if you work out your back shoulder and core muscles. I think you can buy a comfort seat from the Ducati Catalog. I could be wrong.
Anyway, congrats man, you have a Ducati now. Enjoy her.

thanks a lot aditya... i finally did manage to get an italian - and boy I AM in LOVE. imagine - you are just 15 - and monica bellucci is right in front of you in a sheer white gown - and all willing!! that's what i go through everyday..
the white 848 evo looks like a candy to be honest. saw both the red and white together - but for some odd reason i could barely keep my eyes on the red. the white was pulling all the attention.
yeah i do plan to plonk a full system termi's but the only problem right now is that they are way too expensive and i am kinda in a tight spot as of now after the bike's purchase. first investment is a befitting riding gear. then maybe in sometime all the optional extras. (the full system costs a freaking $3500 - customs and shipping extra)

thanks a lot bro. it still makes me giggle like a baby when you tickle him - without the termis. but like i said - the termis have to wait a while. no point getting just the slipons i think.
the popping sound did make me wonder whether it was running rich - but the guys at the dealership made me ride the other bike too, and even it did the same. so either both the bikes were running rich - or i have to get it checked. i will get it checked

thanks a lot.. i am sure i don't need to go to the gym as the 848 is making me flex my muscles in a way i never knew i could. :P
will have a dekko in the ducati catalogue, but i am unsure whether the dealership would be able to source it for me. most of them do not know what are they upto. and one who knows charges 200-300% on everything. i am a marwari, and a poor one at that
