  • RX135 Restoration The Return of the King!

Before I start I’d like to make one thing clear - this is not a DIY project and I’m not an expert either, I’m getting the job done with the help of a mechanic who owns a small garage near my residence and does a decent job with RXs. This being my first restoration, I’m still in the learning phase, request the senior 2strokers to pour in your suggestions if you feel something’s not right.

    Bike: Yamaha RX 135 4S

    Model: 2004

    Mods: None

Kms Done: Speedo stopped working at 30k but I’m sure it will be more than double that number

Problems: Bore noise, low acceleration, heavy vibration beyond 50 kmph and finally the owner itself . Honestly, I did not take good care of this beauty in the past. Worst part, I had let my neighbour use the bike when I was out of town for work. And I’m paying the price now. Not just the money, really feels bad to see her in such a bad shape. So I wanted to give her a new life.

    The Plan:
    1. Engine work
New crank assembly – procured (OE - 2ya model)
Rebore to next size 0.75 mm. Currently running 0.5 mm piston – pending
Ordered new ART piston kit from @karthikdattag. Will get to lay my hands on it this Saturday
Replace the clutch plates, steel plates and pressure plates – yet to be procured
Replace the catcon silencer with chrome silencer – yet to be procured

    2. Body work (Not yet started)
Bend check and paint the frame (the bike has taken a bad hit when it was with my neighbour)
Paint job for petrol tank and side panels
    New Discover suspension for rear
    New RX135 OE seat
New tyres – haven’t decided which one to go for
    New OE fenders, handlebar
Speedo console – thinking of going back to old RX135 console, but since the bike is of central locking type, need to check on how it can be fitted.

Many other parts will also be replaced/ worked upon, will post the updates as I progress with the build. I had been in touch with @SriramEfunds, many thanks to him for patiently answering my queries and helping me in finding the spares. Beware, more calls to follow

Has this been converted to 5 speed? The GB seems to be of a 5 speeder.

Good luck with your build Badri. Do let me know if you need any more help. Also make sure that the bore is washed & polished (Ports) before you go live with the New Piston Kit.

That seizure mark is quite common on the Inlet Port side (Reed cage direction). Happens all the time in all RX135s, nothing to worry about it.

Thanks to you and Chetan .. Really hard to find ART pistons and it would have been one helluva task.. you just made it easier

With regards to washing and polishing, yes I've planned to give it thorough wash but polishing is something new to me.. I thought just washing will remove the carbon deposit in the ports completely and bring it back in shape.

What exactly will be done in polishing? And how will it be done (manually or machine)?

Good to see the restoration thread for your bike. All the best. For the frame checking for bends and repair. Go to Murugan Tinkering works, located in the sidelane of Woodland theatre, Royapettah. They are regarded one of the best for the jobs. They do fork bend repairs too. You'll need to take the frame to them and they are busy all the time!
                              Paint job - No idea.
