1989 YAMAHA RX100-COSMETIC RESTORATION

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Intro here-http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/who-you/...baby-25-a.html

Introduction
-------------------------

"YAMAHA RX"-

Just like a 2 stroke's power to weight ratio, these 2 mere words used to literally make me crazy.Ever since my cousin took me on a ride on his Cherry Red RX100,i was in love. And that very love i've carried for almost 10 years. So when it was time for myself to get a bike i was sure,it would only be a 2 stroke(I'm not too much into 4 "j(str)okes") and hopefully a RX100.

My parents were against me buying a second hand bike, because of all the hassles associated with it(Papers,Restoration etc).It took a lot of time and energy(Always making the RX's exhast note through my mouth,Printing and pasting RX's old ads all over the place and even collecting an RX100 monogram and keeping it under my pillow) to convince them to get me an RX.

And so my hunt began.I myself was a complete beginner in biking and let alone 2 strokes,i knew nothing. But xBhp,all knowledgable people here,The internet and my best friend helped me to get started.I slowly began browsing the threads, asked mechanics, also other RX owners on what to look out for when buying one.And hence began to seriously look for bikes in my area through contacts and through some online classifieds.

I was looking for-

1.Engine-Should be decent, as i didn't prefer to work on the engine while restoring it.
2.Cosmetics-I was not too particular on having amazing cosmetics as i myself wanted to go through a restoration process and was keen on learning
3.Papers-The most important aspect, the papers had to be perfect.

-----------
After a few days,a neighbor of mine who is actually a vehicle dealer, told me there was a 1993 RX100 for sale and he was quoting 28k for the same,i checked out the bike and the engine was okay and the cosmetics too was good, but sadly the papers were long overdue and the Re-test was on Dec 13'.So i had to actually freshen it up and make the paperwork right in just 1 and a half month. So dropped the idea then and there.

A few days later, while browsing an online classified, saw an ad.The place was near and familiar too.So i called up a close friend of mine who lives close to the address mentioned in the ad to enquire and he tells me the vehicle up for sale belongs to his uncle!!!!!! Could ask him all about the bike before even calling the owner!!

And then on 7th Oct 2013,my dad,my best friend and myself went there and checked out the ride,my friend took a test ride and told me it was good, the gearshifts were smooth and it handled properly and most importantly,it ran the way an RX should.
We were happy and my dad gave him a token of advance.Picked up my baby on the 10th of October,2013.

The days!

----------------
I was having the time of my life on my childhood dream, which was now a reality..was really happy and glad I could have the yesteryear beauty our previous generation enjoyed.I was busy with my exams but still managed to clock a 1200 kms after the acquisition.Literally ate and slept on the bike.I was not too keen on restoring it in 2013 so used it maximum.
Also met up with “rxdude”-Whom we all know, his project “Project RX135 factory rollout” is the best restoration thread I’ve seen yet of a stock RX135 at xBhp(Not RX100).He gave me all the necessary information about what it takes to restore an RX.He was and is kind enough to call me up and ask me about the progress(Even as he is out of the country). He sure is one hell of a passionate 2 stroker,There are very few people I personally know, who has inside-out knowledge of one’s own bike.
Cheers to xBhp and all the passionate and knowledgeable bikers here!!.There is surely nothing like xBhp and the fellowship all of us share.

All was good,until----

The Crash!
------------------
On December 24th,2013.While I was returning home from a nearby place,I had a crash.I was not hurt but the bike took the force of the impact. The right fork was badly bent.I don’t have a picture with myself to show you the damage but it was pretty evident.I had difficulty handling it.So after a lot of contemplation and thought I decided to restore it cosmetically as soon as I could.
Visited a nearby mechanic, got to know him and found him good enough to have faith in.

Plans
---------
1.Engine-Nothing to be done
2.Painting of Fuel tank,Side shields-Same blue shade(May require replacement),Chasis,Swingarm,Chain guard and all possible parts.
3.Chrome plating-Exhaust,Shocks,Rear fender(Front,requires replacement)
4.Replace-Tyres,Seat assy,Lock set,blinkers,Mirrors,Handlebar grips,Footrest,Rear carrier and more
5.Install disk brakes(Gladiator disk assy)
6.EDIT-Replace wiring kit.(As its running 6V electricals still).

So here I am,requesting the help of the respected friends at xBhp to help keep my beauty in shape.

P.S--I'm just a normal 18 year old.My friends prefer bikes which are like moving computers, distance to empty,ABS,Amazing looks etc.People call me crazy to even buy a 25 year old bike and devote the amount of time and vitamin-M to restore it.My friends tell me it is so much easier to buy a new bike with a 390 or 500 cc displacement and a million horsepower. But these plastic ponies, don't impress me.I am impressed not when a bike with 3 figure displacement and stylish looks fail to make a statement but i when a 25 year old,98cc bike with bare-minimum electronics make me go wow!-The chrome, the pinstrips and the exhaust note!.WOW!
"You've seen the crowd, now see the leader"-25 years on!-ESCORTS YAMAHA RX.

Please forgive me if i've made any mistakes in this post.I'll definitely try to improve my knowledge.

NOTE:I have decided to go for restoration now and will be replacing not just the bare minimum parts, but most parts as i don't plan to work on the bike anytime soon as i'll be out of station for sometime after my 12th std results. And aesthetics play a big role for me,so i'm restoring it in the best possible way i can.

Get rid of the front tyre ,it is a re-thread job not sure about the rear re threads have a tendency to skid , for the chrome leave it as it looks intact , rechome jobs done locally are expensive but the dont last long and rusts

Not sure why you want to replace the lockset. Is their any issue with the present one? If you do decide to go in for replacement, please make sure you buy a genuine lockset. Else the lock on the tank cap will rattle & vibrate and will irritate.

Chroming of Shocks is not worth it IMHO. If the condition of the shocks are good then may be you can just try metal/chrome polish. Turtle Wax has one.

Check for rust on the insides of mudguards too and take a call on replacement rather than chroming.

If possible, please source Genuine Yamaha rubber kits and replace the 2T oil tubes atleast. Please check the 2T oil tubes periodically thereafter, if you decide to run on autolube.

I am sorry to hear about your accident. I presume you are fine But I am eager to know if there was any damage to the RH pilot lamp assembly and the crashguard. The butterfly crashguard in the pictures is beautiful and a rarity nowadays. What we get now (mostly) is the much smaller version of it. Please do not skimp on replacing fork tubes though. If it is bent, don't bother repairing it.

All the best for restoration

Yes,i am planning to get rid of both the tires Sarin chetta, and is a bit confused what to go for next. Will be posting about the tire dilemma soon.I'll just be chroming the parts for the looks and the aesthetics.I'm not going to be ill treating the bike in anyway(Be it rain, mud or dirt--Strict NO NO).Will only be using it on short rides(Below 20km) around my place. So thats why i decided to go for chroming.

Big fan of your Cherry Red,brings back memories.

I plan to replace the lockset as there is an issue with it not going to ignition sometimes, takes a bit of effort instead of a slight twist of the wrist. As i am planning not to replace anything after this restoration is done for a few years, just sorting all the major and minor niggles here and there.I'll be looking to source a steel key set too. Please guide me in this regard @kb100 and @NitinGirish..is it freely available??

I'll be just chroming the top portion of the shocks..nothing else, again for the looks of it only.I have been looking around for the TW chrome polish but to no avail in my immediate locality..will be updating once i get it in my hands.

The front mudguard is goner, with some dents and rust. But the rear one(including the fiber part) is new and can be just refurbished to get that new look.

Regarding the rubber kit you have mentioned,is it available as a kit(I mean, all the necessary pieces in one compiled form?).As i run on autolube,i'll be duly taking your advice on the 2T oil tubes.

Thanks a lot for your concern, brother.Yes by God's grace i am okay and both the RH pilot lamp and the crashguard is intact.Just the inner tube of the fork(Correct me if i am wrong,i mean the chrome pipe above the silver painted pipe) was bent. And i have a question too,is the butterfly crashguard you are referring to by any chance,OE?.Mine is from OMESH which th previous owner had sourced from coimbatore, please clear my confusion on the butterfly crashguards?,how many versions are available?

----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

I am in the process of choosing tyres for the bike. And i would like to have your inputs regarding the same.Which is the best combo?.I'll not be riding a lot in rain, maybe just minor drizzle and the chances of the tires coming in contact with water is going to be slim according to my riding style.I'll either be riding in proper tarmac or on roads with minor gutters and sand.
Also i don't intend on touring. Will only use it for short rides(Less than 20km,in and around my immediate locality). Also i like to ride around the 40-70 km/h.Not too much of a rash driver.

The tire sizes will be F-2.75*18(As i don't prefer skinny 2.5s and also because the current setup is 2.75 and i like it) and R-3.00*18

I am looking at Michelin Siracs,or if i can source an M45.That would be great. Please share your valuable inputs.

I would still leave that locks & keys alone I bought Steel key set from Cox Town, Bangalore about an year back. Forgot the shop name. Check with the dealers.

I've ordered Turtle Wax Metal Polish from Autofresh.in. Perhaps you can give them a try, they have CoD facility too.

No idea about rubber kit availablity now.

I was referring to the Crashguards that came on RXs from the factory and your crashguard looks just like that. Of course there are many aftermarket parts and I have no idea how many versions are there!

I have a strong opinion about front tyre of RX. It has to be 2.5 for me. I've run 2.75 for pretty long time and hated what it did to steering. 2.5*18 ribbed type in front is what I like. I don't think you have too many options in that size nowadays.

Rear you can go up to 3.00. I've used Michelin M45 (I guess not available now), Ceat Sport & Ceat Gripp. I didn't find much difference among the three. Ceat Sport is a tad less on grip compared to the other two.

RH pilot lamp reminds me, buy a product like Forever Black or equivalent to keep those meters and pilot lamp assembly nice and black. You don't get Original Pilot Lamp assembly now and it would be a good idea to preserve the existing ones.

You are absolutely right, there is nothing like preserving the old parts.I'll try to source the steel key set, otherwise i'll look into, salvaging the old RH pilot lamp and the key-lock set as you have advised me to.Will also try to get the metal polish, once i get the parts from chroming and once i analyze the quality. Will surely update you.

Really lucky to have a crashguard that resembles the original ones,i never knew about it.Thanks for making me aware of the same, brother. In malayalam there is a saying "Anayude purath irikkunnavanu maathram aanayude valippam ariyilla"(The one who sits on the elephant, seldom knows the size of the elephant). That is the exact condition of most of us on the 2 stroke section. In my case,if it wasn't for xBhp and all the seniors like you,i would've never known its value.

Will definitely keep everything in mind what you said.

My first question to you,you are currently running Michelin sirac street setup for both front and rear. How is the perfomance in different conditions..?.Please enlighten me on the subject.

@All seniors:I am just getting started in my biking journey and i chose our common passion:2 stroke for the same. All of you have atleast a decade of experience more than me with bikes.I am trying to do something which you all have so gloriously done at my tender age of 18.If there are any mistakes, please help me to understand my mistake, and teach me whats right.Looking forward to learn from you all.
I promise i'll try my level best not to make mistakes in the first place.

I wanted to comment on this in my earlier post itself but refrained because it will trigger lot of arguments. You said this bike would be ridden gently 40-70kmph that too occassionally. If that is the case, I don't think it is worth investing in Disc brakes. I ride a Duke 390 daily which has disk brakes on both the wheels + ABS but when I switch back to RX I don't miss the disc brakes. Key is know the limitations of your bike and ride sensibly.

Invest that money to get a better set of tyres (may be IRC) or better still to stock up on critical spares for future.

P.S: I don't think Gladiator disc comes for 10k should be costlier than that.

I'll be investing in good OE spares and tyres with the money meant for disk brakes. You are absolutely right. No technology can ever go as far as sensibility.I was just a tad late in realizing the same.
I'll most probably be going for Michelins in the tyre department as i had driven rxdude 's RX135 with Michelin M45 for the rear and Sirac street for the front.I'll have a similiar setup too.

Thanks a lot for making me understand brother.

No,we are not from the same town.Almost 50kms apart. After joining xBhp i had sent him a pm and then we began to talk and eventually i ended up visiting him at his place, last month. He is a great inspiration.Told me all about what it takes to restore one.In fact, even as he is out of country he rings me up frequently to check the progress.
