Re: Restoration of a 1989 Yamaha RX100,by an 18 year old.

PHEW!!!
______

This is the word which best describes my state-of-mind now,as i sit typing,on this "Godsend" 2nd Saturday noon.Well,i've been busy a lot lately.Mainly due to some personal commitments, exam preparations, and well spares hunting too!!.I would leave home early and only would be back by late evening and had to study after i reached home.So couldn't even properly log in and let you guys know of what has been going on.

I was looking for some spares as you guys already know.

These:-
1.Seat assembly
2.Main tube-1(Inner tube)
3.Front brake yoke
4.Front blinkers-2
5.Accelerator cable
6.Fork oil seal

After enquiring at almost all the dealers in my locality by visiting and calling up the renowned yamaha spare dealers at major centres of my state(Cochin-Prime motors and Amba auto spares ,Adoor-PKG Yamaha,Kollam-Remya Agencies,Kottayam-SG motors)..The synonymous answers they all gave me was a big NO!.Most told me supply of parts has been erratic for the past couple of months. Most of them had the chasis, cylinder kit, tanks, cranks and what not..ALL THE MAJOR PARTS ready but none had the minor cosmetic parts i was in need of.

Told me it could take months,phew..yes i was disheartened.I couldn't carry on without the inner tube and the oil seals(Leaving the seat and others alone).Really frustrated i started looking for alternatives(Non-OE stuff) as i wanted to finish it soon.Hell, being without something you love is just really frustrating, kind of like getting to see something and not having the chance to experience it.I missed my bike, everyday before going to bed,i would go over the set of spares and admire them, imagining the respective part being on the finished bike..!!.I've waited for Almost 10 years to get my hands on the the bike and couldn't wait for more.Impatience was getting the better of me.

Well, one day last week.As a last resort i tried to ask for the spares at a spare shop near my place. All the while i thought that the place only sold spares of new bikes(4S).I enquired with them and to my surprise, they had them all.Pheww!!!.Old stock galore.I even got the steel key set which is a rarity nowadays. They had just 1 piece left. And regarding the seat they had both the RX100 and RX135 seat. From my POV the 135's seat looks better. So went for it.

Thanks a lot Satish chetta,Not actually a factory rollout but still. I was about to give up on the OEs but thankfully found them.I did the chroming at Cherukolpuzha, near Kozhencherry. Will have to see if it actually holds up.Hoping for the best!

Took a leave today, and decided to do some DIY like Mudguard underside painting with Red oxide primer for protection against rust and Making the white markings on the tyres. The former worked out and the latter didn't.

1.Fender underside painting-
Easy,Bought some Red oxide primer and turpentine.Painted the inner side and cleaned the mess using turpentine.

2.Tyre marking-
I just wanted to make the "MICHELIN" markings white and even bought some white paint. But turns out the letters actually protruded out and was not embossed in the rubber. So abandoned the plan.

dmkmonk, These pictures below are of the same michelin sirac tyres as yours shod on a rx135.It belongs to a fellow XBHPian dual disc 200.You can find his thread at http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/thumpers-2-stroke-exotics/18987-two-strokers-pride-four-strokers-envy.html.
Maybe
he can help you out.

IMHO,I think that it would go well with your restored RX as the bike would be spanking new and the markings would lend to the overall clean and premium look. You can even ask your painter to do it for you or you can do it your self with a little bit of patience.Good Luck.

THE REBUILD STARTS
_________________

Another amazing day spent well,I was actually busy for 1 month from January 20 till Yesterday(Feb 20).And from today i am free,so decided to wrap the restoration up.
The restoration is half completed as of now.I've collected the spares, have already got the painted parts(couldn't take a pic, fuel tank stickering to be done and clear coat to be applied) and the chromed parts.Just the re-assemby to be done.Decided to devote my whole time for the coming 3 days(Including today) for the same.

Decided not to paint the markings on the tires.I do like the look, but it gives more of a sporty look rather than a classic look.So decided against it.Thanks for the suggestion deepanpandiaraj

This is my plan:-
Today(Already done)-Get the wheels done and final checking and sorting of parts.
Tomorrow(Sat)-Start the final assembly
Sunday-Assembly continued
Monday-The final touches

I don't know how much i'm going to cover but fingers crossed!.I miss my bike,i really really do!
I'll be updating daily(Godwilling) with Good news from each day.Hoping to complete the rebuild by next week.

TODAY(21-2-2014)
---------------------

Started early morning by visiting the mechanic and asking about the progress. He told me the painted parts were ready and was at his home.So couldn't take a pic. He'll bring the parts tomorrow. As i had already told him to bring the rims as i decided to get the wheels ready today

Took the rims from the mechanic.Had planned to apply red oxide primer to the inner side of the rims and the rear fender.Used some sand paper to remove the noticeable rust, then applied the primer.

1.Here is a pic of the rims after the rust was removed(Barely)

All the best bro...put some grease and oil from the chassis tube opening in the back (under the seat)and close with a rubber plug.use good quality TVS nut bolts, grease before fixing.grease behind the headlamp ears as the area is prone to rust, be with the mechanic as far as possible

Everytime i see a 2 stroke (specially yamaha 2ts) I feel very happy. Even today when there are much more advanced and powerful 4 stroke bikes, nothing comes close to the feel a 2 stroke bike provides.

Good luck buddy. Enjoy the build.

Just make sure the mechanic fits everything in the propper way and doesnt cut corners with bolts, nuts and washers. Dont keep the engine internals open for too long. Seal the engine as soon as possible.

Since i have the privlege of having the company of the "lord" myself, I know what you are talking about.

Did you find a complete rubber kit or buying them separate? My rx is in the rebuild process too. Lots of changes. Basically apart from the chassis n crank case all other parts are being changed or upgraded.

Non oe rubber kits are easily available. They have every thing apart from the grip like tank rubber and cylinder rubbers.

Presently apart from tyres n battery everything else is ready. The only issue is I am out of funds. So cant finish it for a month or so.

Regarding mods, I would just say that engine wise it wont be the garden varaity rx.

Will start a thread when i find some free time.
