Re: Restoration of a 1989 Yamaha RX100,by an 18 year old.

The chasis had weak points,as i had shown in the pics.It has been welded and all the parts for painting has been sent today. The items for plating too has been sent.
I have already made a list of parts to be purchased and will be consulting with the mechanic by monday. And then the parts hunt will begin.
@sriram and @Bhibu-Thanks a lot for the info, gentlemen.Even i asked the mechanic and will be trying to get my hands on the same. @sriram:If i find it,i'll be glad to get one for you too if you need it.

    OT-: But couldn't resist.(READ ON)
In Kerala, there has never been any shortage for 2-strokes.After the production stopped in the late 90s and the early 2000s..there was a slight deterioration in the popularity of 2 strokes as they were plenty to be seen and seeing a decently maintained 2T was not eye turning material. At the early and middle 2000s,the crowd was into the newly launched 4-stroke bikes which were more reliable and fuel efficient. And there were a lot to choose from(still there is)

But recently, there has been an interest in 2-strokes(Mainly for the attention it commands on the streets, courtesy the exhaust note). The bulls were and still are there in plenty so hearing the thump-thump was not something interesting and almost all the other 4-strokes were close to silent. So even if it is a new, shining bike with ABS,Dual disks,Stellar meter consoles and a gazillion BHP,only the rider took notice and pride in his ride and the normal people just took notice of the newly launched bike at the beginning period of its launch and slowly lost interest as the bikes became common sight(Like the FZ,R15 etc.No offense, great and amazing bikes..but the truth).

Since i acquired the RX,i have been stopped midway or at petrol bunks by several people(Mostly elders in their 40s-60s),asking me all sorts of questions about the bike.I normally see them having 4 stroke, scooters or normal(not top end) bikes.

Today a person in my area, named Sabu,Stopped me midway and asked where my bike is and why i'm not using the bike nowadays etc.We knew each other right from the time i acquired the bike(Asking all sorts of questions, but i never knew why).Today i asked him and he opened up his heart. In his days of glory he used to ride around an RX100,a peacock blue one with silver pinstrips. He told me,he used to go everywhere on his bike,to ooty, kanyakumari etc and he loved it.Every bit of it.But as the petrol prices increased and his commitments towards family increased,he couldn't afford to lavishly use it courtesy the FE.Finally had to part with it in 2008.He has been riding around a Hero scooter, from then and when he saw mine(Also blue),all his memories came back.

Finally ending the conversation(In which i talked about the restoration, parts hunt etc)..He said(In Malayalam) "If you ever decide to give it away, give it to me,i'll make sure not even a single speck of dust will fall on it.And if not, please give me allow me to ride it even for 2 mins,i'll be the most happiest man in the world".

As i sit here typing this, just think to yourself. What other bike, can give you such candid conversations, delightful glances and such honest words other than our 2-strokes,No nothing else.

Thats why its said,"YOU MEET THE NICEST PEOPLE ON A 2 STROKE"

    Cheers!

          MAJOR UPDATE(14/01/2013)
          ----------------------------------
Today was such an amazing day..!!
Went spares hunting,at Kollam(Quilon) which is almost 70 kms away from home. The only reason behind all this is just 1 person.
Sarin chettan( @kb100 on the forum. Also chettan means brother in Malayalam). With his support and constant interaction through phone,he gave me the confidence that spares hunting in Kollam(His native place) would be a good idea.He is well versed with all the spares shops there. So decided yesterday that Kollam it would be!

Started early from my place with my Father and reached Kollam by 10AM.Sarin chettan and us were the first of the ones at the spares shop(Remya Agencies,Authorised Yamaha spares-especially known for RX spares).Got the required parts(90%) and packed it up in 1 hour.Sarin chettan almost purchased parts by himself, reminded us of some critical spares and stood there waiting for us.
We then decided to search for the luggage carrier(OMESH) brand which was rare to be seen in Kollam.Sarin chettan himself found it very difficult to get hold of it almost years back for @sriramEfund's restoration, but he gave us the confidence that he'll help us find it.We head over to the next shop and there it is..readily available(Seems the lot,had just come in,yesterday!.Thank God.

Then we did some tyres shopping.Head over to Sarin chettan's friend's tyre shop and there it is.Michelin sirac street F and B.
And that was it,we wrapped it all up in almost 2 hours flat..All thanks to Sarin chettan and his contacts.I have absolutely no words for you Sarin chetta. If it was not for you, nothing would be possible.Just so happy that xBhp has given me such amazing friends and brothers.Helping and caring!
          Immense gratitude!
          Long live xBhp!

The Tyre shop is not owned by my friend , fellow xbhpians Aneesh and sajin are regular customers there and is well known to the owner , hence dropping their names got us that small discount on the tyres and the helmet,

                --------------------------
                Parts yet to be procured
                -------------------------
(The dealers say there is a shortage in the supply of these parts,i have already inquired in atleast 4 Yamaha dealers and countless small spare parts shops)Have to be strictly OE.

                1.Seat assembly
                2.Main tube-1(Inner tube)
                3.Front brake yoke
                4.Front blinkers-2
                5.Accelerator cable
                6.Fork oil seal

I need help sourcing these.Mainly the Seat assy and the main tube.Dealers here say,it'll take about 1-2 months depending on the demand,to supply these spares.
Any pointers guys,i would be grateful if you guys could help me.

                  hi dmkmonk,
The restoration is truly going to be fantastic with all OE parts.Happy to know that you are from kerala.
                  1.Seat assembly
                  2.Main tube-1(Inner tube)
                  3.Front brake yoke
                  4.Front blinkers-2
                  5.Accelerator cable
                  6.Fork oil seal
You can enquire at prime motors, mamangalam,Ernakulam if those parts are available.I don't have experience with them but heard a lot about them.
Contact no. can be found by googling.
Wishing you all sucess for restoration.

Those rubber parts are aftermarket ones. Please inspect the 2T oil tube regularly for cracks. My experience with them so far has not been very good.

Do those bearings include Engine bearing set too? If yes, I am a bit unsure of them. Engine bearing set usually comes as a set in a card board wrapping. May be the packing is changed now, better to re-check with people who are experienced.

Buy one more fuel cock. The quality (of the gasket inside) nowadays is poor and leads to leaking petrol. Place an old baniyan cloth on the engine cover the day you install the fuel cock, so that even if the petrol leaks it does not fall on the engine cover and stain it permanently.

                      .
The old stock use to come in a cardboard packing with all the bearings in one set.
When I purchased the complete bearing kit, It came in an individual small box pack (like the way you get M-seal &#128540
The bearing is then sealed in the plastic bag the way dmkmonk has got.
As far as I remember- the OE brand mark on bearings is NRK (or SVK) Please check and confirm as I don't have one available to check.

most of the smaller parts that are made in india like the circlips yamaha stickers, washers and nuts, screws, are delivered as a lot and not in individual packs by yamaha
or so as im told , havent found anyboody selling them in oe packs for some time now

Do those bearings include Engine bearing set too? If yes, I am a bit unsure of them. Engine bearing set usually comes as a set in a card board wrapping. May be the packing is changed now, better to re-check with people who are experienced.
he is not overhauling the engine , so he bought only the front and rear wheel bearings and the cone set

Buy one more fuel cock. The quality (of the gasket inside) nowadays is poor and leads to leaking petrol. Place an old baniyan cloth on the engine cover the day you install the fuel cock, so that even if the petrol leaks it does not fall on the engine cover and stain it permanently.
are you referring to the oring at the threaded portion connecting the fuel cock to the tank or to the one in the sediment chamber under the fuelcock

I am referring to Rubber items only which come as a kit in a card board packing. I will try and post a pic of it once I go home.

Didn't know that he wasn't overhauling the engine. Presumed those were engine bearings, my bad.

Both the O-ring and the one in the sediment chamber are suspect. I've had atleast 3 instances where these have leaked inspite of being brand new.

The restoration is truly going to be fantastic with all OE parts.Happy to know that you are from kerala.

You can enquire at prime motors, mamangalam,Ernakulam if those parts are available.I don't have experience with them but heard a lot about them.
Contact no. can be found by googling.
Wishing you all sucess for restoration.
Thanks a lot Habin.Yes,seeing all the OE parts sure makes me heave a sigh of relief.Lots to go!!
And i already enquired at Prime motors. It is not available anywhere as the supply of the new batch of spares has not started yet. Will have to wait a bit more i suppose.I'm still not sure.Already enquired at almost 5 Yamaha OE spares shops. All of them, have the same reply.
                              Fingers crossed

@NitinGirish and @augmentor-kb100 has already made it clear..Your inputs duly noted gentlemen. And pardon me.Not all bearings were bought.Just a few.

@All-I've been hunting around for the seat assy and the inner tube.Found a non-OE seat called "Robin" similiar to the OE one and costs around 1,200.Has anyone used it before?
And regarding the inner tube-OE one costs around 1,200/- for one tube whereas i've now seen non-OE ones(Brand-BS) for as low as 850 for the set. Will be sticking to OE ones, hope i get them soon. The painting and plating will mostly be done by this week.
