For the hills I recommend riding individually, don't overtake anyone in our group and maintain 4-5 bike lengths gap between bikes.

Even if we split up into groups of 6 for example, eventually the groups will meet up and again it will become one large group.

May i suggest riding in couples , 2 bikes together through traffic wont be a nuisance ... Also groups can leave at different times from rest stops ,Originally posted by Praful View PostEven if we split up into groups of 6 for example, eventually the groups will meet up and again it will become one large group.

hmmm... but that will result is a sort of loose-long-chain of bikes up the hill. This will frustrate cagers who will then become stupid-aggressive.Originally posted by Praful View PostEven if we split up into groups of 6 for example, eventually the groups will meet up and again it will become one large group.

Let me clarify my suggestion. upto 6 bikes, allowing enough space between each bikes as per the bikers comfort level, to go together. Another similar group, at a gap of say 2 minutes following them.... does it sound fine?

^^ Doesn't work. Tried even with a 5 mins gap, considering the distance involved they will definitely catch up. Unless we give something like 10-15 mins gap which will delay things a lot.
Anyways we will come up solutions for that, lets decide the date first

You read my mind...Originally posted by lijok View PostAnd one serious recommendation I have is, while riding in the hills, we should break up into small group of 6 or less bikes. This will help in avoiding difficulties for ourselves as well as other vehicles. Also everyone needs to practice their overtaking skills and do some meditation etc to increase your patience
. Riding in a group, in the hills require a lot of patience as well as safe riding skills...

Your times are spot on! Did this about two weeks ago. But the problem is the roads in Kerala, especially from the TN border till Thrissur - an absolute nightmare!!Originally posted by aargee View PostLet me guesstimate based on sane good speeds...
Coimbatore-Palakkad - 45 mts
Palakkad-Thrissur - 2 Hrs
Thrissur-Chalakkudi -1 Hr
Chalakkudi-Angamaly - 1 Hr
Angamaly-Kothamangalam - 1 Hr (again a guess because, I usually do Angamaly-Perumbavur-MVPA-Kothamangalam)
Kothamangalam-Munnar - 2-3 Hrs (did long time back, so not sure how its now)
I think that would be the fastest from Chennai too (not distance -wise but considering time taken)Originally posted by rossiter View PostFastest route to Munnar (did it last month on the R1) is to stick to the GQ route, but it's about 50 kms longer. Took me 6 hours.
BLR-Krishnagiri-Salem-Dindigul-Theni-Munnar.
The TN roads are really good! And it would be great if the riders from Chennai could hook up with the group from Bangalore at Krishnagiri and ride together all the way!Originally posted by Praful View PostFor such a large group (considering Bangy-Chennai ride together again) the Dindigul-Theni route is much better suited, the roads on the TN side till Bodi are FUNtastic!
But 6.5 hours!

Absolutely correct - the roads are absolutely horrible with insane traffic and worst thing is there is no dual-carriageway till Thrissur, which means you have to keep playing 'chicken' with crazy truck and bus drivers!!Originally posted by rossiter View PostYeah that's what I was trying to convey. Large group + narrow roads gives me nightmares. Plus the junk traffic after Palghat till Chalakudi saps a lot of energy after doing high average speeds till Palghat.
Why not Chennai- Vellore - Krishnagiri - Salem - Dindugal - Theni - Munnar ? That would give the Chennai riders an opportunity to ride with the guys from Bangalore. And the wide open dual carriageways would be much safer and less stressful than the route through Kerala.Originally posted by rameshmadhavan View PostGuys
Route to Munnar from Chennai can be
Chennai - Villupuram - Trichy - Dindugal - Palani - Udumalpet (Stretch of Forest which they dont allow after 6 pm)- Munnar - 618 Kms - Tough for a days ride for normal riders.
Chennai - Vellore - Salem - Karur - Dharapuram - Udumalpet - Munnar - 659 Kms
Chennai - Vellore - Salem - Erode -Dharapuram - Udumalpet - Munnar - 641 Kms
Chennai - Villupuram - Trichy - Dindugal - Theni - Bodinayakanur - Munnar - 609 Kms
These are the available routes and its going to be tough for any 1st timer and who cannot do a single day ride for 600+kms
If we use your 'template' but have Ambur or even Krishnagiri as a night halt, we could then hook up with the guys from Bangalore for a big group ride the next day, right?Originally posted by Jithu View PostSo the best option will be starting the zeroth day from chennai .
for example if the G2G dates are March 11 , 12 and 13 then we have to take leave on 11 th and we have to start riding on 10 th evening.
On 10 th after office say around 6.30 - 7 Pm start riding from chennai .
Reach villupuram (160 Km from chennai ) and stay there for the day .
chennai villupuram can be easily done in 3 -4 hours max . So can crash to bed at villupuram atleast by 11 Pm . The next day 11 th we will have a full day to ride and the distance will be around 440 Km which can be comfortably covered in a single day .

Thanks, but those timing were based on 4 wheeler & not by motorcycle heheOriginally posted by Sunnyside_up! View PostYour times are spot on! Did this about two weeks ago. But the problem is the roads in Kerala, especially from the TN border till Thrissur - an absolute nightmare!!
I'm assuming it should be much faster when we do via 2 wheels. Also to avoid the Palakkad-Thrissur stretch, one can take a deviation via Pattambi-Wadakkanchery which is much better, may be the distance is little (read it nearly negligible) more, but the time saved is almost none for the bad roads.
But riding from Wadakkanchery to Thrissur SHOULD be done carefully for the private bus operators on an excellent two-lane 18 Kms stretch. Note that, this is only an alternative.
This suggestion is only for completing a full circle either clock/anti-clockwise.

All of us (incl Bang & Chennai) MUST do a group ride on narrow SH before the final ride through Theni.Last edited by aargee; 01-18-2011, 07:03 AM.Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle
