  • Leave aside the stats! I took the FZ to chanshal, and on even the smallest of potholes, there was scraping. Thus would advise against it.

    • FZ has a GC of 160 MM vs ZMA's 150 MM. So do u still think its bad ??.FZ has a solid midrange ..isnt it. so that shud be suitable for this terrain.

Fz is a good bike but I really wonder how would it suffice the need when you have had Zma for some time.
I think that someone should start mentioning that the reliability of the Zma on higher altitudes is quite a bit of a myth! 2500+ metres it loses power big time, misfires, has starting problems and does not pull!!!

Old Fox had these problems, Nitin had them, Sunny had them, Bunny had them, I had them, you had them, Zma does have problems at high altitudes. Everybody I know have had these problems with the Karizma up there! Zma is NOT as good in higher altitudes as it is in the plains. This issue needs to be highlighted for Leh aspirants. They should be aware.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

ok..so now even FZ & ZMA have problems doing this trip....So which is the perfect bike in terms of perfomance, relaibility & build quality for Leh.... leaving aside the Bullets.

          • Well, Ken definitely has a point in there! Zma would loose a lot of its power on Hills, for sure....but I have seen that Pulsars have been doing really good at higher altitude.

Last year while doing Leh , I was on 150 dtsi and my buddy was on CBZ xtreme. his bike lost lots of power while I still managed somehow. this time on the Kaza trip too, I saw that my Zma was breathing not very freely while Aryan's 200 was going almost flawlessly. So, I would somehow say Pulsars are better as compared to Zma for higher altitudes, dont exactly know the reason...but if one is as feather weight as I am, then the loss of power at the bike's end would still not affect so badly...Cheers!!

                      • Mumbai to Leh (August) - Any takers?

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but I couldnt think of anywhere else. I didnt post this in the Leh' 2009 thread because it would get lost somewhere...

So I am planning of riding from Mumbai to Leh in August and a couple of friends would join in from Delhi. I was planning of doing it solo, but I dont I have the guts to do that - since I got my first bike 15 days ago and I am not a seasoned rider.

I hope there would some guys who would be interested. A confirmed answer would be good rather than "maybe" or "depends", so that I can plan accordingly.. Thanks

My experience is completely different. On both my leh attempts I found pulsar to be performing very badly. So much so that on first trip the 150 dtsi absolutely gave up and we had to send pillion to leh on a truck.
My unicorn too had power loss but easily took a pillion to leh.
Second time I had K&N in it with a stock jet and it ran beautifully. Took rider and pillion both above 70kgs plus loads of luggage easily and also outgunned a superbly maintained and jetted for hills bullet standard with lighter rider/pillion on moor plains. Almost touched 100 there.

If your bike is jetted rich on plains especially in the initail (pilots + airscrew) and midrange (mainjet?? or is it needle position?) than it will perform poorly on higher altitude. A lean bike on plains performs great in hills.

                          cheers
