I did Leh this year (June/July 2011) with some friends from bcmtouring. Here is my budget/planner for a Leh trip.

    My two bits:-

Plan at least six months in advance. The rider is the most important part in trip and get yourself fit. These are detailed in the May/June issue of XBHP magazine which I found to be helpful. You can choose any four stroke bike of at least 150cc or better. If you can get hold of a fuel injected one, the better. If you have a carburated bike, learn to clean the carb and to tweak it for high altitude adjustments. Lean some clutch adjustments as well as puncture repair.

I went in my 2009 RE STD350 CI. Well..everybody takes Bullets to the hills; but that doesn't mean they are suited to the hills. My ideal bike would a naked off-roader with good power and torque at lower rpms. Most the travel from Manali to Leh will be in first, second and third gear only. So we need power and torque at lower rpm.

I am attaching my list of things for the trip. This for a budget trip. I have not included Pangong Tso, Nubra, Suru, Zanskar etc. This is for a basic trip from Delhi_Bilaspur_Manali_Darcha_Pang_Leh_Kargil_Sonam arg_Ramban_ Amritsar_Delhi. Of course, you can add variations and alter the trip.

My ideal pack for the trip is three riders/bikes. If more number of bikers are there, they can be divided into three. My take is that larger group is tend behave like hooligans at some point or other. But this is strictly my take..so please forgive me if you feel I am wrong..I am a 40 year old confused soul..

Most important..Everybody who get Leh'd will carry some part of it in his/her person for the rest of their life..Its been more than 4 months since I have returned from Leh.. But I am already yearning for Leh.. who knows.. I will be back there..

PS: Here is my photolog of the trip https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...0332194&type=3

Travel to Delhi and from Delhi with bike in train: Rs. 3000 (AC 3tier from Cochin to Delhi up and down) plus Rs. 6000/- ( bike transport charges up and down) including packing and "tips",
    Thanks for your trip inputs.

The budget of Rs 20,000 seems quite frugal compared to the other figures that have been discussed on this thread. The bike transport charges seem quite high, though.

Your JPEG file brought back fond memories of my 3 year posting in Delhi. I used to stay at Maneckshaw Marg and Gopinath and Sadar Bazaar were our favourite haunts.

      Hi

My estimate is for a budget trip.. our trip was one such journey. All the amounts mentioned were actual..rounded on the higher side.

Most of the riders are scared off from doing a Leh trip on motorcycle because of budget constraints...

I mean the rider who rides a modest two wheeler from home to office six days a week and is longing for a getaway ride and is thinking about Leh as a unattainable dream..

The actual railway transport charges from Kerala to Delhi and back (I boarded train from Amritsar on return) was Rs. 2300/- for up and Rs.3000 for return.. This was mainly because I quoted actual amount of Rs. 80000/- for the bike for insurance. The railway charges 1% of the value of the bike as insurance premium. I didn't want to end up loosing my bike..
The packing and loading charges as well as baksheesh was very hefty in Amritsar. I was forced to cough hefty sum by touts in collusion with the parcel babu.

These touts can be avoided if you go to the Dealer/ASC and get the packing material which comes with the bike from factory to the Dealer/ASC. Also get hold of a Service personnel with you at Amritsar/Delhi... They don't seem to milk Faujis..

      regards & ride safe

like all riders here, I am dreaming Leh in 2012..but my plan is bit different than others..

          shimla - puh - manali - keylong - leh - srinagar

(I don't have any reason for this route, just trying something different)

Is it possible to follow such route??if yes, how permissions and other legal things will take place??

Do we need permits to go to Pangong Tso or Taglang La... Or may be which all places needs a permit to visit...?

How much time will it take to get the permits?

What documents need to be produced for getting the permits?

Tanglangla is on Manali - Leh road and is the highest point in that segment. You dont need a pass to go there. However, you need pass to visit Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, etc.

Pass is obtained from Deputy Commissioner's office in Leh. All you need is a copy of your photo-id card ( voters' Id, Driving license etc). Mention all the places you plan to visit on the same application. Just ask the person sitting at the pass office while filling the form for details

We got pass within 15 minutes. Take two photocopies of pass for each area you will be visiting These copies will be collected at the check posts by police/army on your entry and return.

We paid some~Rs.600 for pass to Nubra and PangongTso for getting pass for eight persons. Its the fees for which you will get receipt.

              ride safe..

                  Hi

You can't wear army uniform..or any dress with milirary insignia... period..

other than that no bar in wearing camo/green/khaki pants. No law banning such colored dress.

What would happen if a Navy officer says "nobody should wear white colored dress henceforth"..

                  regards

You are only half correct here, rama, if I may say so. Yet, it is heartening to see that at least this much is known in the civilian space.

The law says that no unauthorised person may wear a dress which may cause such wearer be misconstrued as being a member of the Armed Forces. Needless to say, every military insignia is out. Also out is the pattern of military/paramilitary/CPO/police uniform sewn out of camo/olive green/khaki cloth.

I don't know why some people have a craze for wearing camo trousers. It looks foolish and out of place, not cool and trendy.

                        Sid,

You are so very right there. Another comes from the ignorance of law enforcement agencies in our country who do not check such offenders. It angers me to see people wanting to wear camo clothing and look Ramboish without having to bear the responsibilities of the authorised wearers - the Armed Forces

                          Feel free to wear it
I personally was wearing non protective camo pants on Ladhakh trip. No issues whatsoever. They can handle more dirt and not look dirty.

                                Hi Sarvesh,

I am planning for June 2012 regardless of whether I am able to form a team.

I have put up a schedule in the earlier posts, do read it and also the attached Excel sheet for planning equipment, spares etc.
