Ditto for you too, rama. Perhaps, in this way, we can spread the word around.

            • Hi Guys, my question might be a little off topic here but since this is the only active 2012 Leh planning thread, I am posting it here. I along with 2 friends am planning a trip to Leh in June 2012. The only available transport is an ETIOS LIVA. Since there are many guys here who have been there, I need any/all advice regarding type of conditions to expect in June 1st week. We are planning to take the Delhi-Srinagar route since have heard that roads on Manali route are bad. We also plan to explore all major places enroute. I would have loved to go on a bike but it didn't work out since my pals can't even dream of such a treacherous bike ride.

June 1st week will be quiet cold, with loads of snow around. Infact 1st/2nd week can be the suitable time to go, if you want to witness maximum amount of snow & less/no water crossings, provided no hindrances occurs for the passes to open.
Srinagar manali is much better then the Manali-Leh route, but the maximum amount of beauty & adventure resides on this way. So if you go via srinagar, try to return via Manali, so you complete the entire circuit & dont miss on anything. Just ensure, the passes are open. They should be probably open, but in case of heavy snowing or landslides, they may get closed suddenly.

Thanks Rachit. I would prefer snow than the water crossings. Is there a way by which we can find out if the passes are open or no before commencing the journey?? Like a website or something.

bcmtouring will have a dedicated thread on manali-leh and leh-srinagar road status. You can keep tracking it there next year.
But, weather is finicky and information even a few hours old can sometimes be not reliable. Go for it and hope for the best

Thanks xstunter!! Link added to favorites. Did you face any closed passes since you went at the same time we are planning to go? At what time should we start seriously planning for the trip (like shopping etc)? I am hoping 1 month (May start) will be enough since we will be going in a car. Going on a bike would need much more preparation.

will surely be tracking the bcmtouring thread. I understand that weather on that side is anything but predictable so will keep ourselves prepared for that. One question I have is that are there different roads for bikes & cars? I have read many Leh travelogues, all of which are written by those who went on bikes. Even in the pics I rarely saw any cars except for on the major stoppages. I hope it's the same paths since don't want to miss the beautiful places where the bikers went.

                              It is the same route
Since the traffic density is very low, you will rarely find any other soul on the stretch of road you will be on. Don't worry, there are numerous travelogues written by car guys. Search on team-bhp.
Do check if the Liva's ground clearance is good. You WILL scrape the bottom and many places. Any underbody protection will help. Google up how to prepare your car for leh by bcmt.
Also, a bit of advice about second hand weather reports - dont trust blindly. When we went, everyone on the way said rohtang is closed, but we made it through. Then, people in koksar said that baralachla was closed, but it opened by the time we made it through.

There is no need to register or any such formality, man!

I had started this thread to get like-minded people together so that I can have some company on my ride. Please do read the thread from the first page to get its drift
