  • Comments on my itineray

There has been some talk about the schedule that I have planned. So, I am putting up some comments. Please bear in mind, my experience is dated to the 1996 to 1998 period. Climatic changes would have had an effect on weather patterns in this area so readers are welcome to add their own comments with one caveat - please, please add something if you have experienced issues first hand, personally. Please do not quote a friend's experience as it will adulterate the clarity of information for others. Thanks.

Late Oct to Apr - the area is completely cutoff, all passes are closed and the only access is by air.

April - the whole of Leh from Lamayuru to the West to Chumathang in the East is free of snow. Please note, it does not snow much in this area, the main issue is wind and related hassles.

May - the thaw starts. Some lower passes witness landslides and avalanches. Kashmir DOES become Paradise on Earth. The sight of wild orchards filled to the brim with the loveliest flowers brings a lump to one's throat and confirms the philosophy that this land is worth fighting for since 1947.

June and July - the thaw has set in completely, most passes are open to traffic. Breaks in roads due to snow melt undercutting the substrata and washing away the top soil common, Snow melt waters make streams fast, deep and impassable to vehicles with low undercarriage.

Aug - When I was there, I saw one or two little measly sprinklings from the skies to pass off as rain. Don't know the scene now but have heard of an active monsoon so horrible road conditions for all vehicles. Possibly the worst month to tour by road but the 2nd best after July as far as the cold is concerned.

Sep - the temp has started dropping, some higher passes see the first snowfall which increases with each passing day. The snow comes in very fast on the higher reaches and does not melt so passes start clogging up.

Oct - passes are all but closed, the last few Army convoys are rushing to complete their tasks. Traditionally, 27 Oct is the date when the Army stops movement on road for winter stocking. Emergencies are a different issue and will not be discussed here.

Nov to Feb - deep winter. The terrain inclusive of the tree line in Kashmir is snowbound, Leh and its adjoining areas are snow-free but the temp is always subzero by a significant margin. The roads are tightly frozen so are passable. Black ice in the morning is a real danger. Water freezes to the innermost core even in a thick plastic bucket especially in Karu, Kiari, Chumathang, Chushul. The cold in Siachen is a living nightmare. The wind chill factor means business. But for acclimatised gentry, the best time in Leh - the air density is at its highest, breathing is sweet, the airlines and AF aircraft carry full loads and the whole area is at peace and waiting for the annual rush of tourists from May.

I have chosen the first week of June with deliberation. The passes are mostly open to bikes, the cold has receded by a good margin, dhabas and hotels have opened for the summer and for me as an infantry officer, the streams are passable (the infantry simply HATES to get its feet wet unless in combat), the roads have not still lost their topsoil and the rush of tourists is less so getting accommodation is not a problem.

Again, I may be off by a few days but that is due to the vintage of my experience.

Sorry for the typo, it should be "itinerary"

Yes, you can and comfortably so. You may have to be a bit careful while crossing streams as the Avenger has a slightly lesser ground clearance compared to other bikes in the Bajaj stable. Otherwise, no issues at all.

Since the traffic density is very low, you will rarely find any other soul on the stretch of road you will be on. Don't worry, there are numerous travelogues written by car guys. Search on team-bhp.
Do check if the Liva's ground clearance is good. You WILL scrape the bottom and many places. Any underbody protection will help. Google up how to prepare your car for leh by bcmt.
Also, a bit of advice about second hand weather reports - dont trust blindly. When we went, everyone on the way said rohtang is closed, but we made it through. Then, people in koksar said that baralachla was closed, but it opened by the time we made it through.
Sounds great. Yes, ground clearance was the first thing that came to our minds so my i20 was ruled out instantly (GC 165mm) whereas Liva has it slightly better at 170mm and is lighter thus having good power:weight ratio. We will try to keep the baggage as light as possible to help not lower the GC. Thanks for suggesting the underbody protection point. Will google up to find what can be done to avoid damage from scrapes. We anyway own a full premium service for the Liva to the owner after the journey

Keep checking the thread for updates. Like I have messaged you, there is no formal joining up required, you have to just network to form part of the gang

            • Members datasheet on Google Docs

              Hi friends,

There has been considerable activity here with an ever increasing number of members asking to join up and expressing their desire to ride to Leh in 2012.

For our mutual benefit, I have opened a Google Doc Excel sheet titled "the Leh 2012 Members Datasheet".

Please fill in details in the appropriate columns at your convenience; your data will stay confidential as only people with the link can access and amend it.

You should have added a column for emails also.

Thanks, hensil, that was a major blooper. I have made the necessary amendments.

Some members do not seem to want to add all details. They would have to monitor this page. Also, towards April, those members who have filled in phone numbers and email addresses might communicate with each other thru these two media, bypassing xBhp altogether. It is their call, I suppose...

                  • Thank you Icemang. Is it also possible to add the location/city of the riders? This can enable them to meet in person for discussion and even have some riding practice together.
It can also help me to know riders from my town Pune. I am living in Abu Dhabi and will be traveling to India for just Leh tour. In case if I cannot get enough holidays to make it to Pune and transport the bike to Jammu, I can ask my son to load the bike in the train with other riders bike from Pune and I can receive it in Jammu. I can fly directly to Delhi which can save my me at least 4 days. I'll try my best to be in Pune and travel by train to Jammu.

Ok, hensil, I have added that column too.

One more idea. If you are lacking time, you could ask your son to load the bike and give the bills to a member of the group. This member can then release the bike from the railways at Jammu and synchronize its delivery to you when you arrive from Delhi to Jammu.

Aspirants, please do update your details.

                        Just one suggestion here.
In case you are ok to ship the bike via Gati. Why not ship the bike via Gati to Pathankot. Fly to Delhi and catch Jhelum exp in night (or catch it from Pune itself). Train will reach Pathankot early in the morning. You freshen up, reach the Gati office (that is there on the highway itself). Pick the bike and you could be on road by 10-11am. Take Samba - Udhampur bypass. This will avoid you the pain of passing through Jammy city traffic and then negotiate not so empty, Jammu - Udhampur section.
                        OR,
You can carry the bike in train itself and unload it at Pathankot (if possible). But, one reason why I'll not carry my bike in Jehlum exp is that, it stops a lot and at many stations the luggage can could be opened. So, unless you have made sure the bike is loaded first at Pune (which will make it difficult to unload at any place other than Jammu), it could be pushed around at various stops.

                        • Hi Nav,
Thank you. I could use Gati or other mode of transport, which ever works out best. I am not sure at the moment.

                          • I am planning to get a car mounted camera installed somewhere in front/top of the car to capture the journey. Can anyone suggest any options and also explain how it will work? I am assuming it to be water proof since it's a mount camera but am not sure for how long it will record and in which quality (VGA, HD etc).
