Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
Planning for Leh this year...on my ZMR.
Anyone in and around Delhi NCR (Gurgaon), who are planning for the same?? And willing to accommodate me in their group, or if you aren't in a group yet - would like to form a group with me??
Kindly PM me, and we could share contact details.

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
I will be riding to Leh from Jammu and come back via Manali route. It's going to be a Solo ride , even though I am quite used to traveling solo but this will be the first time I would be traveling to Ladakh. The trip would be from August 8th-24th
I have a couple of questions , would really appreciate if I could get some advise here.
1) Is August a good time to Ride to Ladakh ? I know Ladakh lies in the Rain shadow area but how bad would it be from Jammu > Drass and from Baralachala>Manali which I know gets good amount of rains in August.
If anyone has done the full circuit in August last year or past years , request you to please share your experience.
2) Can anyone please update the current rates and best possible way to transport the motorcycle from Kolkata to Jammu.
Cheers!
Tariq.

But aug is also peak monsoon season in north India and heavy rain till Zozila and near Keylong,Rohtang,Manali may pose some problem for you.
Like road blockage due to landslide etc..Be fully prepared with rain gears.
Mnay people visit Ladakh in Aug but no harm in taking precautions and also have some buffer/extra days for contigency.

1. As Narender said - August is an awesome time to visit Ladakh.Originally posted by 8TariqKhan8 View PostI will be riding to Leh from Jammu and come back via Manali route. In 2011 we did it in August and it has been the best Ladakh ride ever! Everything feels much more alive. The hardship is greater too. Rohtang and Zozilla will be big challenges slush will be there on many routes. But, the route will be greener and cleaner with lesser traffic and in case you are lucky - you could get a freak snowstorm as well
2. The best way would be the train luggage van in my opinion. Transporters are dodgy and charge a big premium. You could also ride but it will take you atleast 2 days. (Delhi- Kolkata is around 20/21 hours and Jammu a further 10 hours - moderate breaks included)

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
Thanks Narender and Mik . I am thinking of changing the travel date to 2nd week of August , hopefully by that time the effect of rain would have lessened towards the manali side.
I have around 17 days in hand. I want to visit Hanle and Zanskar region as well , do you guys think its doable in 17 days ?
I have no intention of rushing from one destination to another , I can give few places a miss if I have to, my priority is to enjoy the journey . Journey is the destination .
Any suggestions on which places I MUST visit and which I can leave out if need be ?

first of all you said your planning solo ride, which always risky [in case any breakdown/accidents], and august as said by gentleman above is peak rainy season.
there will be lot of landslides and you might miss your planned days or even some of the areas such as pangong lake will be blocked.
riding in cold wet is not much fun in that high altitude.
as per me best time is june/july as almost all places are accessible.
so if possible postpone it to june/july else if you really wants to go then take care of your planned days and even worst condition in to consideration

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
17 days from Kolkata or from Jammu ? Maybe if you post your researched tentative itinerary, that can lead to better answers. Hanle/Tso Moriri/Pangong/Zanskar are all unmissable if you have the time. All of these places should be covered comfortably in 17 days if its a Delhi-Ladakh-Delhi trip. Also, don't be too stuck up on a very tightly coupled plan. Nature is freaky and you never know where you lose time. You can easily drop/add places on the fly. No reservations are required and places to stay abound at all major tourist points. Just have all the info in place and ride safe. Have a great trip :-)Originally posted by 8TariqKhan8 View PostI am thinking of changing the travel date to 2nd week of August , hopefully by that time the effect of rain would have lessened towards the manali side.

Hi Nagoo . thanks for your suggestion and concern I did take rains and all other unforeseen situations into consideration, I have decided to give it a go. I know passing zojila and rohtang would be daunting task but I am up for it . I am hoping I wouldnt face any problems in Ladakh but then you never know and thats the beauty of it all . I cant wait till september its gonna get colder. So mid of August is what I have decided. I have been on many solo rides, including a 3000 kms round trip from Kolkata to Bhutan ( you may check out my travelogue ) but still Ladakh is a different ball game alltogether . Lets hope for the best

Hi mik , I dont think riding from kolkata is a good idea , if I had enough time in hand may be I would have done that . I would want to be in the best of physical conditions for Ladakh, So
I would be riding from Jammu .
17 days including travelling from Kol- Jammu ( flying) and Delhi- Kol ( Rajdhani)
I havent prepared any itenarary yet, will write down a rough one , I dont like sticking to an itenirary , thanks to so many people who have done the ride , we have so many iteniraries and maps with distance and time avaialable. So grateful to all these people who took our time to do it.
So I would have around 15-16 days from Jammu , what do you say ?

SRI-Kargil
Kargil-Rangdum
Rangdum-Padum
Padum-Kargil (Long day)
Kargil-Leh
Leh-Khardung La - Leh and time pass around Leh -- (Dropping Nubra tentatively -- Compared to Hanle etc Nubra is not that awesome)
Leh-Pangong
Pangong - Hanle (Permits are an issue as of now. Lots of people being stopped)
Hanle - Tso Moriri
Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Pang
Pang - Koksar/Keylong
Keylong/Koksar - Mandi/Bilaspur
Mandi/Bilaspur-Delhi
14 Days! If all goes well. If it doesn't just keep dropping a few places here and there. Most riding days are only 6/7 hours. So you can easily recover time in case you lose a day somewhere.Last edited by Mik; 07-17-2014, 04:06 PM.
