  • Ladakh Planner 2016

Hey guys, i am planning for a trip to Ladakh in June 2016. We are currently 6 guys and everyone will ride their own machines. I intend to do Delhi-Srinagar- Leh - Manali -Delhi in 14 days.

    I have a few questions:

    1. I will be shipping my Duke 200 & a RE350 from Andamans to Chennai through TCI/GATI and both are quoting Rs 7000 for any state in India except J&K. So, should i ship the bikes directly to Delhi & Fly to Delhi to start the trip or Ship it to Chennai and take it with me in train to Delhi ? Irrespective of cost (latter is expensive) which one is a safer bet, i don't want anything happening to the bikes during transport?

    2. Essential riding gear? Product names for Jacket,Gloves,Pants & Knee guards used in that terrain?

    3. The ride starts 28th May from either Chennai or Delhi. So, first week of June is a Good time or should i postpone it to the 2nd week ?

    4. After going to most of the Leh trips in the forum made the trip planner, Suggest if anything needs to be changed or places i should visit?

    Day 1: Chandighar -Udhampur
    Day 2: Udhampur -Sonamarg
    Day 3: Sonamarg - Leh
    Buffer Day
    Day 4: Leh
    Day 5: Leh -Hunder
    Day 6: Hunder -Leh
Day 7: Leh - Pangong Tso
Day 8: Pangong Tso - Marsemik La - Pangong Tso
Day 9: Pangong Tso - Leh
    Buffer Day
    Day 10: Leh - Keylong
    Day 11: Keylong -Manali/Kullu
    Day 12: To Chandigarh

    Thanks in Advance

Brother may I suggest kaza and leh with a stop at Chandra tal

You can go via Shima, kaza, leh and come back from srinagar

          Re: Ladakh Planner 2016

well here is my take ,

          1. skip Delhi , take flight to Chandighar and start in any direction chandighar-jammu-srinagar-leh-manali-chandighar or reverse both good. now why Chandighar ? well the flights are cheaper and transporting bikes to chandighar is safe and cheaper, there is nothing much to checkout in Delhi, its plain highway and hell of traffic.

          2. by Skipping Delhi you can save atleast 3 days, which you can utilize in some other places around Leh.

          3. Don't relay on Srinagar, any time curfew and other things always make plans to go haywire

          4. your internary is very tight, day 1 is almost not possible and other places with this plan , you won;t spend any time , you will be just touch and go like trip/ride.

          5. plan wisely and don;t try to cover everything unless you have additional days [now it make sense to skip Delhi ]

          6. and be very very careful about RE bikes, they might breakdown anytime anywhere and will waste your 1-2 days [mark my word ]

          7. take standard riding gear , you can use all, june is time when lot of tourist visits and it will be cold , but exposed skin burns due to Sun heat.

offtopic : - we are planning also , but skipping srinagar , and probly will cover from Shimla side + badrinath and end @ Leh , but in May end

            Re: Ladakh Planner 2016

In addition to what nagoo pointed out, instead of Delhi or Chandigarh, even Amritsar is a good starting point. I did the same from Amritsar. the benefit is you can check out the beating retreat at wagah border and the golden temple.

            1. Sonmarg to Leh is possible in 1 day, i have done it. (for more details, look up my leh trip on the tourer section)
Ensure you check out the Kargil war memorial at DRAS, its not in Kargil. I made that mistake. regret it.
You can go very close to the LOC if you take a side road just after entering Kargil (Ask locals)

            2. Duke has a very stiff suspension, if possible get a cushioned seat fitted, keep the suspension stiffness to the lowest setting. roads are very very bumpy, when u get them at all.
Nagoo did mention about the bad REs, but they are the best in suspension ( fyi i too hate REs)

            3. Pack at least 1 heavy duty dust mask which would be comfortable for you. its dust as shit in JK.

            4. I would recommend going Chandigarh-Srinagar- Leh- Manali - Chandigarh route, the climb is more gradual, u will acclimatize faster.

            5. Delay your trip by about 15 days, because if the roads are not opened up, you might end up wasting days (and money) somewhere in the middle.

            6. Unless you are planning to stay in personal tents, i dont think there is any accomodation available in Pang. But, I did Leh-Keylong in 1 day, so you should be able to reach Sarchu about 3-4 hours down the road from Pang.

            7. since you are coming from so far, take the time to go to Shimla as well.

                  1. Problem is i don't know anyone in Chandighar to ship the bikes too. Which is best mode Train or GATI Courier? i have friends in Jammu
                  3. i have friends living in Srinagar, will keep a tab on the curfew beforehand.
                  4. I have no time limits But the IT folks in the group are the ones without leaves anyways will skip the train ride and Delhi to add more days in the mountains.
                  6. My Major worries, will tell him to hire a Pick up van and ride in close proxy
7.Already bought all except the Tundra.

Will see you if i see you there or i will contact you for updates if u return before i start.

While coming back i intend to ride south so will try to detour to Amritsar
                  2. Will get a gel seat and tune the suspension to its softest setting. I cant say much to the RE guy he is buying the bike only to ride at leh, will get it delivered in March
                  3. Ya, Already bought one. Dust as shit is still a understatement. Was in Srinagar for a week in June. Made a last minute Leh Plan So missed out a lots of places.
                  4. Chandigarh i am not sure. Maybe i will start from Jammu (Have friends living there). The Manali leh climb is too steep and have read a lot of them falling sick in the logs.
                  6. Okay. will do that. Thanks
                  7. Definitely will.. will change the ride days accordingly.

when i did , me too didn't know anyone in chandighar, they will keep it in there store room until you pick it up, our bikes reached Chandighar 2 days before us, and it was in there store room. so don't worry, they have some policy in which if you keep bike in there store room for more days you need to pay some rent and it ain't that costly

But My major questions is Transport of bikes by train or Courier (I have GATI, TCI & Agrawals here in my place)
Since you are already going to load your bike(s) onto Gati/TCI/Agarwals transports, it would make sense to book them for the entire way instead of getting your bikes into two different modes of transport. odds are, if there are plenty of bikes, the couriers will load all of them in a single container, so they will remain safe all through to the final destination, whatever that might be, so might as well make it your intended starting point, to save you the hassle of unloading and reloading them.

tell the RE guy to exhaustively test every aspect of his bike, in addition, carry atleast 2 complete refills of engine oil (RE), chain lubricant (all exposed chain bikes), chain cleaner, and puncture repair kit. the roads are pathetic in some areas.

also, on a train, it being a govt organization, they might not be as careful as the private couriers. afterall, the latter do have a reputation to maintain.
                      hope that answers your query.

Are all the 2 wheelers banned from Rohtang Pass?

                          Hello All,

I have been planning my trip to Ladakh coming Jun - Aug 2016 (Totally depends on the number of the leaves that I get from work ).

However I found the following article and I almost got an attack looking at it. Following is the link.

I have been through the entire tag, I did not find the answer for my question.

Following are the few of my queries. I would really appreciate if anyone will help me on these.

                          1. Is it really closed?
If anyone who has done the Ladakh trip in recent 2015, can help me in a better way on this. If it is closed, which is the itinerary that you would suggest.

                          2. Is it allowed just to go through the Rohtang pass and not do a picnic over there and return to Manali ?

Please let me know you thoughts on the same.

I would happy to know if the Rohtang pass will be open 2016 ride. Fingers crossed

We are also planning in May 16 [from Blr], but we have some specific plans
landing in Chandighar and covering Badrinath and mana pass [if we get permit], then spiti vally and reach Leh, surrounding Leh and fly back from Leh.
planning for 15 days , why fly back from Leh,coz we can save few days which i can spend in mountains
