Also, how are you checking the level?? On the stand or with both wheels on the ground?

bro,how many kms did ur bike do?? i faced a similar prob with 300v,2000kms and the oils was way below half mark... there was no smoke for me too..Originally posted by shabbarak View Postguys i filled in MOTUL 300V 5/40 in my unicorn some 1500 kms back , 2day when i checked on my dipstick its showing at the half mark, i checked my exhaust there is no visibale smoke at all , where is my oil going ? do i need to worry ?
i panicked like u,opened the engine and changed the piston rings...
have been usin petronas sprinta full syn from the last 12k kms, changing at every 4k kms, even then the oil level is way above the half mark.... the riding conditions were same,110kms 2~4 times a week and arnd 500kms a week..
so first try with any other oil,and then we can go from there...RED BULL did'nt give me WINGS, my BIKE did !!

Thanks HydBiker,Originally posted by HydBiker View Post^^^ Valvoline Premium is good.
there is a Castrol GTX 20W50 available with JASO MA specification. That is for bikes. Read behind the can.
If you don't find Motul 5100 15W50 then try the Yamalube 15W50 Semi SYnth at Rs 415. Yes, expensive. But if you search for the Motul everywhere you will endup spending the balance money on your petrol.
I have given up on castrol, it is pretty useless after 1200-1500kms or so from my previous experiences. I believe GTX is mineral, I am looking for semi- synth (non-castrol)
hmm, hadnt considered Yamalube, is it good? is this the same thing thats used for FZ? I still have the same issue. Where do I get it around this area. Right now, I am open to any of the three options.
Thanks,

Anna when i filled her up it was showing 90% on my dipstick, to day i checked my bike on the stand it showed around 40%Originally posted by HydBiker View Post^^^ Shabbar da, did you check the oil level when it was poured in? compare the current level to the level when the oil was just poured in.
Also, how are you checking the level?? On the stand or with both wheels on the ground?
i checked after revving my bike for 5 mints and did not screw in my dipstick , btw what diffrence does the stand make ?
i did 15K kms till date and i am not using the K&N u had given me , the bike sounded funny after a few days .Originally posted by Dogg View Postbro, how many kms did ur bike do??Last edited by shabbarak; 11-03-2009, 04:37 PM.Shabbar

There you go-I was asking him the same question for my Fiero F2 too!Originally posted by shabbarak View PostAnna when i filled her up it was showing 90% on my dipstick, to day i checked my bike on the stand it showed around 40%

Looks like some bikes really don't like anything other than mineral oil!Quench my thirst with gasoline!

When you poured in the oil if it was to 90% of the dip stick, check the oil level in the same position (on stand or on wheels) as you checked earlier but once your bike is standing still for an hour or even better - early in the morning.Originally posted by shabbarak View PostAnna when i filled her up it was showing 90% on my dipstick, to day i checked my bike on the stand it showed around 40%

The level in the dipstick indicates about 250ml drop if the oil is at the bottom. So, your bike might have lost about 100 - 150 ml (all guess work based on past observations. no calculations here). If your bike doesn't show correct level even when checked after standing still for hours, then it is a surprise that so much oil is missing in 1.5K KMs.
Not really. You should have measured the oil that came out of your F2. How much did the level on the dip stick drop?Originally posted by Sarvajit View PostThere you go-I was asking him the same question for my Fiero F2 too!

Have you ever checked how much the level dropped when you used mineral oil for 3K KMs?
Mostly I make it a point to measure the quantity of oil drained from my bikes. The best I drained out is 50 ml less than what I poured in. Generally it is about 80-100ml less. No notable variation found with mineral or fully synthetic oils.
Also, for some bikes when we pour in new oil we install a new oil filter. While draining the oil we do not count the oil the oil filter & its chamber holds - about 50 ml. The same error comes in when we check oil level immediately after pouring in without running the engine.

The best time to check your oil level is first thing in the morning, without starting up the bike initially.Originally posted by shabbarak View PostAnna when i filled her up it was showing 90% on my dipstick, to day i checked my bike on the stand it showed around 40%

i did 15K kms till date and i am not using the K&N u had given me , the bike sounded funny after a few days .
IMP-always check engine oil with the bike on the centre stand.

Got your points. I never used to check it earlier&used to take it for service once in 5K kms.according to the manual. Wonder how much damage I caused by that!Originally posted by HydBiker View PostNot really. You should have measured the oil that came out of your F2. How much did the level on the dip stick drop?

Anyways, this time it appeared to be around 1/2 of that vessel type of container which they use for draining the oil. The oil filter was also dropped into it before changing. So how many ml.do you think it could be? The mech.says he could not get a proper reading level on the dipstick-thats how less it was! So he himself decided to fill in 1100ml.&asked me to come back to check at around 1500kms.That will take about 3-4 months.
My doubt is on the piston rings, but I don't wanna get paranoid&change it like someone said here. I want to wait&clearly see white smoke first!Quench my thirst with gasoline!

Oil level will show less in dip stick AFTER reving the engine since oil will be displaced all over the inside of the engine. If you wait long enough for the oil to settle down, the level will show more in dip stick again.Originally posted by shabbarak View PostAnna when i filled her up it was showing 90% on my dipstick, to day i checked my bike on the stand it showed around 40%

What difference does stand make? If bike is on side stand, bike will be tilted and will show different level in dip stick depending on inclination. Even if you try to make bike stand straight. it'll still be unsteady, so best is to put it on main stand. Besides, manufacturers recommend that.

Oil level in my 220 shows more than full (infact the entire oil window is full) when i see it 10 mins after swtiching of the engine. But when i check it while the engine is on it shows the exact level.
I cross checked with the pbk guys and they saw it normal.
Now how are we suppossed to check the oil level?
