    Falcon Dude..

Although I am not sure, I read somewhere in this forum that shelf period of engine oil is 3 yrs or so.

You can give a try, go ahead & use it

Even I used old stock last time about 6months back & I did not clearly see what is the Mfg date but I am sure it must be 2008 only cos even I paid 350/Ltr.

    • Hi guys,

I am running AGIP FULLY SYNTH 5W40 oil in my Activa for the past 1000 kms. But synthetics are looking to shoot up my future maintainence because of their rising prices. I am thinking of switching to mineral or semi synth after another 3.5k kms. My sccot has done 33000 kms. Do I need to use an engine flush if the switch is done? If yes, please mention some good flushes available?

It's a car oil, does wonders for your clutch. (If you're wanting to replace it early.)

                    • My mistake, he wanted a 2T & not engine oil!!!
I don't know who supplied fully synthetic oil for transmission, but I use Shell Advanced.

@Andante - Helix Ultra can be used on gasoline engines & is being used on motorcycles, atleast, that's what the guys at Shell fuel station told me. Appreciate, if you can help us understand how the oil affects the clutch.

The biggest difference between most motorcycle engines and a car engine is that the motorcycle has it's clutch and gearbox bathed in the same oil as the rest of the engine. A car has a dry clutch and separate gearbox oil.

Now a car engine oil will have friction modifiers that lower the amount of friction between the piston and cylinder. This lower friction will be the undoing of your motorcycle clutch, since it relies on having good friction between the plates. Loosing friction causes it to slip and a slipping clutch heats up and wears out real fast.

If you're looking for a motorcycle oil you must use an oil rated for a wet clutch, this can be seen by looking for the JASO MA rating on the bottle or spec sheet. If an oil does not have this rating. Any rating that starts with API means that it is a car oil. There are no recent API ratings that comply with JASO MA specs, only very old car oil formulas without friction modifiers can have both an API rating and a JASO MA rating. None of the modern car oils fit this requirement!

I know there are lots of people who claim that using a car oil in a bike is perfectly okay. I won't stop you, but if your clutch or any other part of your engine decides to go for an early retirement, don't come crying to me.

Bottom line: Use a proper bike oil with a JASO MA rating!

                              • @Andante - Tks for the explanation; though I've read it twice, it will take a while to get onto my head. I'll understand them thoroughly & get back to you for any questions.

But I would like to add a point here that JASO is another certification like API or ACEA. The difference being that JASO is Japanese standards, API being American & ACEA is European standards for engine oil. Check out Shell or Mobil, they will not be JASO certified.

I used to use the good old JetX from Castrol that used to be JASO, IIRC, it contained FC standards. Good Thanks to the Govt to have smoked out 2 strokes & ever since then JetX is being unavailable & hence all these confusions.
