  • If its below 30 Degrees then use anything above 10W30 and bike sulks. 10W30 can hold onto a maximum of 35 Degrees and if above then bike'll start to overheat within 10Kms of riding, so 20W40 is recommended.

Now its 26 Degrees here, and unfortunately am using 20W40, the bike's real heavy on acceleration and vibes like hell after 6k. Even today morning when had to go buy milk, I was riding in slow motion, but strangely there are no starting issues, bike starts on first crank without any assistance from choke, and bike's been idle for the past one week. Guess its cause my idle when hot is 1800 RPM's.

I've ridden my bike with 20w50 at temperatures hovering around 25-30'C.
what I've noticed is: ride sanely and bike will perform normal, try to gun it and tachometer tilts to right in slow motion with heavy kinda feeling.. but that "slow-mo & heavy feeling" disappears when engine gets hot, say after riding some 20kms.. but there wasn't any starting problem, noise etc etc and also it started without choke though, cold idle rpm came down by some 150-200 rpm. moral of the story, 10w30 is not needed for most Indians.

Most of the time, the small time Indian Manufacturer touting Foreign Company collaboration is nothing more than Re-packing the Original company product in India to get tax levy advantage. After lapse of MOU time frame they invariably go apart and the Indian co., starts re-packing some local co., product.
So unless there is a recent qualitative assessment of their oil, with good results, do not go for Savita oil.

Hehe, normal Indian doesnt ride to Ladhak daily, Whats he does is go to market, work etc. In my case the markets 2Kms from my home, so total 4Kms, how do you expect me to enjoy the ride...

Jokes apart, what you've said is correct, cause we undergo a very unstable climate, now the temp here is dropping gradually from 32, its 30 now, and in the morning it was 26 Degrees. So we Indians sure are in need of the 10W part, but the part after needs a change and it would really be nice if it was somewhat 40ish or 50ish.

i agree to that but still 10w is very thin and 20w is completely safe in even 0'C.
And the best way to choose oil grade is to follow engine oil v/s ambient temperature chart provided in owner's manual.

We the Hero Honda, The Hero Honda not give the warranty if use other oil, they the idiot.

So can you please share your chart. Cause our manual's just full of crap, they even threaten to void warranty if we use anything other than their prescribed oil.

              • Anyone using ELF MOTO 4 GOLD 20W40 ? It cost Rs.215/- in Hyderabad.
If yes, how is it ?
                Need a small review.

I guess its better then to topup ur karizma with 10W30 always and perhaps when it really gets hot in summer months from march to like may or perhaps going on short trips they can shift to 20W40. And anyways I know better not to believe that warranty crap once the vehicle is a year old, since they are anyways making us to regret claiming for it as they will find some loop hole to say its not covered going by the warranty guide above. My Yamaha warranty policy is even worse, shall scan and post it sometime later.
There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

10W30 on ZMA no matter how rough you treat it, will not lessen much in quantity and will be like that for about 2k's. But the problem is that it'll loose the reddish tint by some 1~1.5K. Thats the reason we prefer changing rather than top-ups.

And being from Kerala, I'd say 10W30's the best bet we've got, rather than straining the engine with 20w40.

Not only warranty but everything relating to Yamaha sucks, i.e if you're from Kollam cause here every service consists of only wash's they dont even bother to oil change, unless insisted by the owner.

Really that's a surprise for me, I am hearing Yamaha SVC not giving proper service like a basic oil change!
Here in bangalore in regular service we get oil change + filter change(although not necessity), {my svc they were willing to topup my bike with either 20W40 mineral or 15W50 SS at second service itself}, cleaning and lubing chains is charged a lot (Rs.125) that too separately which diss me off but seems like they use spray lube and the job is done neat so worth it, also air filters cleaned, checking electrical, battery charge, clutch and brakepads, replaced if worn out and wash the bike.

Yeah you will need to stress any problems you are facing or else they will just say it will get fine after service, as if they are swooshing a magic wand. That's with all the bike service center representatives typical attitude and not concerned about being Yamaha or Hero honda. In such cases report such ppl to the SVC, and shoot a email to the respective bike manufacturers. Better option I prefer would be to try and shift over to another SVC. There must be amny more Yamaha showroom and Service Centers in Kollam right??

By the way I am feeling gear shifts a bit hard now after doing just 600km after oil change, do you think I need to head out to SVC to get it checked or loosen the cluch play a bit and try top up oil to max level, right now its a little above the min level.

severe service . The heavier oil is specified for such usage for the superior protection it provides to all engine parts . Moreover it would solve 90% of your irritating engine noise & vibration problems . Noise = metal to metal friction = wear = low life & troublesome high maintenance bike . 1500 kms is the max I can tolerate any these new 10w30 oil anyway . However the tide water made 10w30 HeroHonda oil is working superbly otherwise for shorter rides and giving quick starts on chilly mornings . 100% better than the BPCL made one that they filled at the stealership the first time around . Yes , no drop in oil levels too yet @ 1200 kms but it's already become black and thin . Next bottle goes in this weekend . Maybe people in Kashmir will benefit from the 10w30 but in Kerala ?

Plus, I'm using 20w40 Motul 3000 4T plus in my 1 year (20k+ kms) old Karizma R since 3000 kms and it is yet to turn blackish.. even once service guy told "lemme check the oil whehther it needs a change" and he replied "no, it is new"
Although I did never tell him that I'm using any other oil than HH 10w30

The gears might be harsh even due to non proper lubrication by the engine oil. Check the oil level & btw what is the engine oil you poured ?

Sir, Size is'nt all that matters. ZMA though comes under the 230cc category, it runs a real lazy compression. And believe me, even a FZ16 can kick its ass when it comes to zip zap riding. Cause there are other things at play here, and you know that better than me. And you'd be surprised to know that am not the only one from Kerala to complain about 20W40 .
