  • Thanks for the feedback on Yamalube 20w40.

I was in splits when you mentioned 'had a real long trip...350kms'.

Got Shell AX7 on my bike few days back. This is for a short trip of 1.5k kms ride. Will post my observation.

    • Suggest a good engine oil for Dazzler.

hello guys! i need ur suggestions for engine oil. my Honda Dazzler has just crossed 5K on odo and till now i have been using Honda 20W40 oil only. my bike is performing quite well with mileage of 52-55 KMPL and its very smooth since last 2.5K kms even on high RPMs.
now i want to experiment with other brands for engine oil. i will stick to 20W40 grade mineral oil but there are many options in same grade these days.

my requirements are smoothness and mileage same as or more than Honda oil and more revv friendly and responsive engine. in short i would like to have more performance while retaining smoothness and mileage. small compromise on mileage will be ok but smoothness is important for me.

all suggestions are welcome! also advice about from when should i start using semi synthetic and then synthetic oil?

if the oil you are using is performing smooth, you shouldnt try others. If you insist, for improved performance castrol power 1 is the best i have come across.. The gear changing pattern changes and you ride at higher speeds in the same gear and acceleration also improves, but the oil is short lived. Wont last full 3000 km, it turns black even on new engines which do not have carbon deposits.
I am also a big fan of shell advance ultra and ax7 grade oil. You can try them too.
Yamalube mineral is a perfect match for you but it cant improve performance.
You can use any oil now, your bike has got more than enuf kms on the odo..

        • Where can i get original castrol power1 racing 4t oil in pune??
Also would this oil be fine for my R15

When you put a multigrade oil.. The starting viscosity may be thin or thick depending on the temperature difference its having like 5w30 is thinner than 10w30 at starting temperature. When the temperature rises it does not get any thinner than a single grade w30 oil i.e it is having viscosity improvers which prevent further thinning.
            But..
oil is used for more than 2000kms, now suppose (10w30) oil/bike has done 1500kms with the same oil (I mean without oil change), hence the additives including VII's are partly used-up/broken down. now the oil viscosity is of 10Wxx, here xx is always less then 30 (the higher rating of oil) which wont be able to protect the engine internals if its 30' C. that's why thicker (not too thick) oil is good for its added buffer.

according to it even a 20w50 wont be able to save an engine if the temperature are close to 40' C and here I've seen 47' C!!

Continue with mineral oil for 5k more IMHO . Since that Honda oil is serving you well , no need to consider other 20w40s for now . There would not be significant difference in performance on changing . Of course if you like to experiment like me , you can buy motul/gulf etc 20w40 oils from outside shops . Nothing bad will come of that either .
For the performance benefits you want , switch to the best synthetic oil you can buy post 10k kms .

Find out the grade of the oil(CP1R) and that recommended for your bike in your owner's manual . That should answer your second question .

Please do not read the graph as operating range. It is a guideline of Pour temperature for different Ambient .As the ambient decreases you need lower number oil to maintain pour and liquid state to enable oil circulation on start up, which can be increased as the ambient goes up.
Here We are more worried about pour temp., ie., the ambient at which the oil will not freeze and gum up the internals, and can work satisfactorily.
The number after W indicates the Viscosity of oil of indicated grade at 100 C .

I want to try because i am not sure if i am getting optimum performance for my bike from current oil or not as i haven't tried any other engine oil.

also, i just checked that there is castrol power 1 and castrol power 1 4T racing oil on castrol india website? which one do you mean? and i think both have grades of 15W40 while bike manual recommends 20W40. will it be ok to use 15W40? please clarify my doubts. sorry for being noob..

shell advance ax7 having grades: SAE J 300 10W-30, 10W-40 and 15W-50 and advance ultra have 10W-40 and 15W-50 as per website. which one is more suitable with proper grade?

I was in splits when you mentioned 'had a real long trip...350kms'.

Doing a constant 350Kms without a break was the longest trip I've done in a single stretch, normally after every 50 or so Kms I'm used to taking breaks, but since this was a checkpoint ride and was late into the night, didnt get the opportunity to turn off the engine even for a second.

Got Shell AX7 on my bike few days back. This is for a short trip of 1.5k kms ride. Will post my observation.

                      1. I love Yamalube.
                      2. Shell's almost impossible to get here.

Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T now comes in 10w50 grade. It is a very good oil(atleast for Unicorn and CBZ) even though most people deny it. I had done 8100kms(+40ml Nulon Engine oil treatment) without oil change on my Unicorn. My friend almost covered 7000kms on his CBZ Xtreme and still using the same oil. Shell Synthetic, Motul 300v sucks in my Unicorn. Currently using ELF Synthetic which is absolutely wonderful in my friends FAZER as well as in my Unicorn. I recommend ELF
Don't worry about grades if you are going for synthetics.

Buy synthetic oils from distributors only. you will get huge discount.
Got shell synthetic for 550(mrp 755) Castrol for 600(mrp 700) Elf for 600(mrp 725) Motul no distributors here so paid 850 for mrp of 895.

Running synthetics is not expensive at all. example..

Honda mineral 1L costs rs230 changing oil every 2000kms means.. for 6000kms it costs almost 690(3*230) + labor costs of 60(20+20+20) if you go for a mechanic. where as ELF or Castrol synthetics cost Rs 600~700 and can work very good for 6000kms.
If it is the case with Gulf pride which costs 240~250 the price can go still high.
And the smoothness by synthetics is worth every penny.
