What do you think.. should I use 20W50 for my pulsar 150cc from now onwards or 20W40 is good enough?
go by the recommendation.. 20w50.. Mileage will reduce slightly, dont worry for it, but so will the engine oil consumption.

    Cheers.

Dabu'jee , firstly welcome to xbhp and the never ending debates in the engine oil forums .
For your bike you'd do best to stick to it's original recommendation of 20w40 oil . It's a shorter range better quality oil than the 20w50s, other than being cheaper and more widely available anywhere in India . Choose from any of the numerous better 20w40 oils from gulf/motul/elf/valvoline/servo etc . Change it every 2000kms or so, along with the oil filter and drain the old oil hot .

      • yeah..will go ahead with 20W50 then.. may be motul.. donot know why bajaj changed the grade for all pulsar series...ever for UG3 as well. What I heard is because of heating problem in dtsi engine.

Mr. Pinaki Sir, could you please let me know some good 20w50 grade oil available in market for pulsar 150cc UG3. I am thinking of using motul 3100 gold, 4t..20W50.

Pinaki Sir please provide your advice for him on this grade

You'd need a 20w50 if you regularly encounter high ambient temps , which isn't the case in pune , I think . Bajaj is recommending you a 20w50 oil now because of logistics , they simply don't make any 20w40 . Pulsar 150 UGIII is spec'd for 20w40 , Bajaj can not alter the specs of bikes they have already sold .
              Anyway ,
If you prefer the 20w50 grade for whatever reason(no harm in it either).. valvoline premium 4T plus 20w50 semi-synthetic is praised by all pulsar users I know , so is the Motul 5100 15w50 semi-synthetic and Motul 3000 4T plus 15w50 . Take your pick .
@ MSN1 - Thanks bro , I was just typing it out here when I saw your post .

Yeah , service center boys are there to do just that , it's part of their job to confuse you so as to loosen your wallet . Yes , motul 3000 4T plus 20w40 is a very good oil , I am running it presently in three bikes , no problem .

              • Wao.. you guys are awesome.. its my first post and you are making me feel like a part of a great team. Thank you fo all your input.

Pinaki Sir.. I was also thinking the same..may be bajaj came up with 20W50 dtsi oil..and hence telling all these grade change for all pulsar series.

I do not know how bike would behave...in 20W50.. may be little heavy..but the guy from service center asked me to use 20w50 and said bike will not get heated soon...and vibration will be less.. and you can go for long ride..last he asked me to put dtsi 10K..... I felt they just want to cheat me. I did not hear anything good about dtsi oil also.

yeah with castrol 4t bike use to get heated in max 15K..and made me to think about using 20W50...still not 100% sure..may be I will change to 20W40.. motul 4t plus.. Will think this weekend and decide. I will keep you updated.

I have a mail from Bajaj customer care askingme to use 20W50..will attach the mail for your reference soon.

if i would have had a pulsar 150. I would not take any risk of using w40 oils.. Even if the manufacturer recommends it.
A lot depends on the engine built quality and fineness of clearances.. If you had a yamaha or a zmr or a unicorn you should go for w40 grades.. If you have a pulsar or a apache w50 is the grade.
These bikes have larger clearances, and a stop at the red light overheats them whether summer or winters.. If you are a gentle rider who doesnt get stuck much in traffic or red lights w40 can be used.
                  Benefits of
w40- more mileage, lot of choices available.
w50- less noise, better heat protection, less dip in oil levels, less vibrations.
On a summer afternoon, a pulsar 150 and a karizma 225 zma gets stuck in a jam, both are on w40.. You wont get any marks for guessing which one is burning oil. It all depends on engine refineness. Pulsars never tells you it has a refined engine.. It has got power! After all it has got two sparkplugs.. There was a third sparkplug bike also coming in the dtsi range Is UG3 having three sparkplugs?

No UG3 is with 2 sparkplugs. Pulsar 200NS is coming this April/May with 3 sparkplugs.

The future of using one oil for most application is here..starting with Rotella T ,and the demand for it is so high the supply is always far behind .
another great information shared thanks for that sir.
                      .
                      @ dabu,
use whatever you like 20w40 or 20w50 no problem with either.
W50 will last little longer, make your engine last little longer, lesser oil consumption, lesser mileage. On the other hand, w40 will give free reving engine, better mileage than w50, but wont last like w50.
Both grade comes in similar price range.
Or you can go my way; 20w50 in summer & 20w40 for rest of the 9-10 months.

                          More sparkplugs means more heat also;

                          2 sparkplugs 20 W - 50

                          for 200NS 3 sparkplugs 20 w - 60

Ha Ha...May be Bajaj will come up with new engine oil...Bajaj NS oil by the way I have decided to use 20W50 for few km and see how the bike will behave...then if I donot like I am going to switch it back to 20W40. I saw today 3100 4T 20W50 motul semisynthetic for 300 buks.. will buy tomorrow. I will keep you guys posted..by the way this oil is not having ester technology...so hoping there will no oil leakage problem...finger crossed

No it won't mean becz this time the 3 spark plugs are fired only by ECU when required. Only the main plug is 'on' everytime. And it has liquid cooling too so no issues.
                              Whats there in a signature?

                                :-)
Not all overheating problems can be solved by engine oil..
For the 200NS it is liquid cooling. It is a must on all pulsars with two spark plugs.. but they are playing around 20w40/20W50 grade. How can anyone install liquid cooling on already sold air cooled bikes!?

Another big flaw I have found on pulsars is that the spark plug is completely covered with rubber seal. Come on Man, Spark plug area needs to be cooled for better performance, even a splendor comes with exposed spark plug. You have installed two spark plugs and made them air tight! If you won't get oil burning issues than who will? Yamaha!? Which has YRCS (Yamaha Ram Air Cooling System) which sends a good amount of cool air to flush away the heat near spark plug area. It is nothing but a tapered hollow tube which send high pressure air collected while bike is moving to spark plug area. Simple solution to avoid head build up.

                                Attaching the pics.

For pulsars I would suggest 20W50 even if I am sleeping.. :-)

                                Just Kidding.

Mr. Enthusiastic has pointed out the same liquid cooling, while I was busy collecting images and cropping them to fit the size limit!
