Actually Arai makes helmets for different head shapes, while Shoei follows a standard interior shape - which I believe to be long oval in the US territories. I tried the X-12 and X-11 too last week, but I somehow liked the Arai shape much better. It might also had to do with the fact that I have a 61-62 cm head size, much bigger than the average.
But I liked Shoei X-12's padding much better. I might have switched to Shoei just for the heck of it, but when it came down to the price - $430 for Arai's existing top end model vs. $810 for Shoei's top end X-12, the padding alone did not justify the extra $400.
Yes, this was a discontinued graphic so I got this relatively cheaper. I paid $479 for the helmet + an extra smoked shield which is way cheaper than paying $807 for a brand new Corsair V. Even the base Corsair in solid colors cost $709. This is Arai's latest model which replaced the RX-7 since last year.
So while the exact graphic is no longer available, the Corsair V is a brand new helmet model, loaded with tech to the gills. Anything less than $500 is a steal for this model! I am not much of a graphics guy and prefer solid colors(my current Arai is a dark grey), but I thought this opportunity was too good to let go by.
Monster Energy is still with Arai, but without John Hopkins. The latest Monster Energy Arai helmet is the Cal Crutchlow Replica which retails for $810. 100% same helmet, different graphic! All because a rider switched teams... Ouch.
