re: Problems with Pulsar 200 NS

Buy a 200NS, I know a guy who learned riding on a 390 Duke, I used to laugh at that guy, now he laughs at me. The jerk when releasing the clutch is nothing, you will get used to it in a week at max. Don't worry about height, I know a 5'5 50 kg girl who rides a P200NS.
I am back!

Prathappa, go for the NS. You'll most likely get used to it within 50-100 km, seeing that you have been riding an Activa. Here's what I suggest:

1. Keep the RPM under 3000 for the first 100km and then move up to 4000 RPM for the remainder of the run-in or as Bajaj advises. RESIST and subdue the urge to open that throttle.

2. Be GENTLE with the gears. A firm nudge is all that is needed, along with the clutch pulled in all or most of the way. Use engine braking as much as possible, but keep the 4000 RPM limit in mind.

3. Anticipate your braking, turns and slow downs; you will be moving a lot quicker than what you are used to and you will get there a lot faster too.

4. When staring from a standstill, you need not rev the engine, just very gently open the throttle to about 2000 RPM as you gently release the clutch progressively. DO NOT rev the engine with the clutch pressed beyond 2000. With practice, you can get moving even without touching the throttle.

5. Read the Run-In thread here on XBHP to understand the specifics of what is needed.

6. When you read the thread above, resist the temptation to use the Motoman method (google to find out what).

7. Vary your speeds during run in and change gears frequently while taking care to stay under the RPM limit.

8. Do not let your engine heat up too much by riding in slow, stop and go traffic, especially during the initial couple of hundred kilometers. If this is unavoidable, then give the bike a 15 minute break each time.

9. Change the engine oil in 500km or less (I prefer around 200km) with the heat cycles well controlled.

10. As you progress with the run-in, increase the RPM limit by 500-1000 RPM at a time. Do not go all kamikaze and suddenly rev to 9000 RPM because your distance to complete the run-in is finished.

Chances are, you'll do a better run-in than most of us who are guilty at one point or another of going over the run-in limits prescribed. You should know yourself; if you are likely to lose sight of the limits especially when the bike is new then you should reconsider this purchase.

In my opinion, you should not bother with buying a used 100cc; you have been riding an Activa and this purchase can be looked at as an upgrade/step-up from it.

All you need to remember is to treat the bike with respect at all times and you should then be fine.

Good luck!

Thanks nirvan, your post was an eye opener. Will wait and practice on my friend's bike few more days and then go for the NS. Will try my best to keep within limits. I want my bike to last long as my dad is forcing me to get 150cc or less for less maintenance charges and higher mileage. But I want this bike with maximum possible mileage just to keep my dad happy. So run-in period needs lot of concentration.

Buddy if you're looking for a mileage bike, NS won't be the right choice, I'm riding at slower speeds only I'm getting 40 - 45 only(City + Highway). It's a bike for speed freaks, you can easily reach 100 kmph without any effort on the engine. If you ride at higher speeds, mileage decreases, I convinced my dad and he's OK with the mileage. All the 150cc bikes will give you more mileage than NS and maintenance cost is also less compared to NS (except R15, CB 150R). Run-in period decides your mileage, engine smoothness, and trouble free engine.

Whats the mileage you both are getting. And is it normal that sometimes by mistake the rpm goes to 5000 and then comes back to 3000 rpm while gear shifting. Would it affect the engine in those 5 seconds?
i m getting mileage of 36 kmpl as of now and as for your problem i think that the reason is while gear shifting you would have been accelerating the bike which leads you to higher RPM i would suggest while shifting dont accelerate just calm your nerves, slow down your ride a bit and then do the shifting and ............. KABOOSH........ your problem is solved.......
And yes bro i think it affects the engine......

Ride your bike below 4000 rpm, always try to keep the rpm between 3200 - 3700 rpm. Shift the gears in 3200-3500 rpm. Then you'll get more mileage. Day after tomorrow only I'm going to do my first service.Still now I drove 430 km's.

I wonder why people who cry for mileage also wants a performance bike.

Seriously if you are looking for mileage better consider a 125 cc or a 150 cc bike

Don't take this in a wrong way but you need to have a hold of sarcasm.
Sorry if you were offended.
I get 29 km/l even when I followed RUN in up to 1000kms by heart, after that I wasn't able to resist anymore, It was like I had sunny Leone in my arms and all I was doing was kissing her on the forehead from the last 1000kms. That moment I couldn't control my lust and from that day, I do 60km/hr always in less than 4 sec.

Agreed but I think there are too many posts discussing mileage in this link which was actually started to discuss problems in the bike. See for yourself
And these were by aspiring owners and not users so it cannot be for bike problems as you say

I think you have to go for 1st service after 750 kms right? However do post the instructions and way the bike handles after 1st service.
