  • Apache RTR vs Yamaha FZ

Am confused between Apache RTR180 / 160FI / Yamaha FZ

I will use my bike quite sparingly, to run errands for the most part within the city. I may take it out for long rides say once in a month. I'm 5' 9" & about 72 kg.

I want a low maintenance, easy to use bike, with a good resale value, as I may decide to change / upgrade my bike.

As per your height, I guess both the bikes will feel smaller for you.
But anyways if you want to choose from the listed bikes.. RTR180 is the bike which you may need : Sheer power, rear disc, i think its fuel economy as well..!! It looks sexy..
RTR180 is the powerful & high performance bike from the listed above..

If I were you I would have gone for the RTR 180 but my needs were really different from yours.

        low maintenance, - RTR
easy to use bike, - FZ
        good resale value - FZ

I called FZ a easy bike as you can really lazily slug it out in the city and its a decent tool for highway rides... maintenance and mileage and craziness is RTRs forte!

As you want good resale value - I think yamaha wins here.

You want easy to use: both RTR and FZ series are easy to use but in city limits comfort wise FZ wins again.

FZ also has a more comfortable sitting posture for long distance tours.

It seems FZ is well sutited for you but you'll pay a couple of thousands more over RTR 180 which is better in power, torque, acceleration. In mileage too FZ get beaten fairly by RTR specially FI. So also keep these points in your mind.

Finally, take test rides settle on one which you find most comfortable for you

The apache has relativly low maintainence, except for some minor niggling issues. The Fz too is a light catch on the pocket.
You might have some problem finding spares for your apache, have got no idea about FZ
Both are lookers from any view, thats the reason they are being spotted at every head turn
Performance wise the Fz doesnt stand to the superior 180. The 180 gives a tough fight to the p220 and R15 upto some distance.
Both bikes are also commute friendly within the city.
I would say go with the Apache

              Firstly welcome to xbhp....
dude it entirely depends on the expectations u have from ur bike....like mileage looks or watever it is that u need....all the above are good in their own respects...TD all of them and then decide ....as far as the maintainance part of it goes I can safely say the FZ takes the cake on that...go thrgh the ownership exp threads here on the forum

Wow, thanks everyone for the quick response. My usage will be limited say 20 - 50km a week. So mileage is not that imp. I will put a premium on performance, build quality (low maintenance, etc). Where can I get an estimate of resale values of Yamaha & Apache?

I have both the bikes so can put my money on that!
The FZ is a fuel hog in the first 10K kms... the RTR is a scortcher..

Drop a FZ and shell out good money on plastic, drop the RTR and shell lesser amount!

I can't agree with that even though you own both... if you drop an FZ the plastic parts are really cheap and you can replace it with only that specific piece(eg:- consider the tank)... am not saying RTR maintenace is high than FZ, but the maintenance of FZ is ~0. i have completed 21000kms on my FZ... the only thing i have replaced(other than my accident) is the clutch cable(89 RS/-) which broke at 17000 kms.

Ok here is the long version of what I meant...
Drop a FZ and the first thing that would go is the handlebar (thats the first impact thing on sideways fall) if its bad, it will scuff the tank and tail and body...and the the clutch brake levers will give away (they are designed to be like that)

Drop a RTR and the first thing that will go is the side guard, then the bar end.. if its bad then the front visor and some scuffing on the heat shield.... its difficult to get to the tank... however if you can get to the tank in an accident, then imagine what all you can get into with the FZ too...

And the most important line which you guys missed reading is mileage... (for me it comes under maintenance or cost of ownership)

Without any disrespect to the FZ, it is a fuel HOG for first 10K kms.. then its normal.... the RTR is not like that... ride here like crazy and you can still squeeze 50KMPL easily!

Check this link... this is my accident on the bike... what you say the outcome for this type of accident on any other bike... simply say: this would have happened... in this case the FZ's wide handle bar and the silencer saved the tank and other parts... if this type of accident is caused on an RTR... the whole tank could have replaced viz. other form of accident on RTR will result in huge damage on FZ... so my point is that we can't compare the maintenance of a bike from the dropping or accident point of view.

And in the case of mileage. +100... fully agree with you that mileage of FZ is very low compared to RTR...
