yamaha fz16 or apache rtr 180
Hi Team,
Sorry for reviving an old thread
I am a newbie at XBHP from Chennai. I am in the process of buying a bike and I have finalized Yamaha fz16 and Apache rtr 180 carb version. I am not interested is Bajaj as its quality is low (no offence to Bajaj lovers). Suzuki GS150 does not excite me due to poor A.S.S here is Chennai. Honda unicon has a waiting time of 3 months. I need to finalize asap.
Test driven both the bikes from Raj Yamaha and Ramkay Tvs. Liked both but need to finalize either of the one. My use is mostly city driving
Heard from many forums that Yamaha fz16 is having troubles like
- Misfiring
- Rear alloy bent
- Mileage
- Procurement of Spares
Also heard that the rear tire for apache rtr 180 is not up to the mark and it needs some upgrading to MRF or Michelin.
Do let me know about the maintenance aspects of these two bikes.
Gurus, Please let me know which one of these two bike is good for an all round purpose

As your use is mainly city riding i will say buy an FZ16... RTR is also a good competitor... as far as the maintenance is concerned - i own an FZ16 for 1 year& 3 months and has completed 24000+kms on it... for me as a maintenance part i haven't spend not more that 100 bucks for it...Originally posted by R@M KRRISH View PostHi Team,

don't know about the RTR(may be RTR owners can tell you on this).
Misfiring - i haven't met such a problem...
Alloy bent - Frankly speaking it is of bad quality, lot of my friends including me has faced such an issue... alloys are realy bad quality as far as i am concerned...
Mileage - That's the funniest part of this machine... it was really frustrating for me in the beginning almost upto 10K kms coz the mileage was "varying", i had got 32, 35, 38, and even 58(no body will believe it, but FZ owner's will
) but after 10K+ kms the mileage is almost saturated, means now am getting almost 38-42 in between... do expect a mileage in the range 35-40(if you are lucky you may get more
)...
Spares - Spares are easily available buddy...
These are a brief note of Yamaha FZ16 from my experience...
sigpic...Ride Long...Ride Safe...

Pros of RTR
#Great Throttle Response
#Comfortable seats compared to FZ
#Great Braking
#More Mileage
Cons
#Back tyre needs upgrade to MRF, Michelin Or Pirelli
#Vibes @ High speeds
If u r willing to cope up with the vibe and willing for a tyre Upgrade, then go for RTRYou Wont See Me In U'r RVM.. Coz U'll Be In Mine

Fz braking is better than apache...
Apache clutch response is the best I have come across in a bike...
if you are into city riding then FZ is the best.. FZ is so much flickable through traffic that you will love it..
about the mileage part it is too much varying... if you ride sanely expect 40-50
don't know about alloys never faced any problem....
Apache cost of maintenance is high compared to fz..
Apache 180/FZ mileage is almost same..
overall apache 180 is a better package than FZ if you are much into performance...Riding, loving and enjoying my lord of the streets.. FZ-S...
And dreaming of an R6/R1/FZ1/CBR 1000RR

That depends on the type, surface, intensity, speed, collision impact.
i dont think you've dropped two FZ's to check that.
#alloys get bend very fast-poor Quality
Your source of this INfo please.
Again depends upon how deep the pathole, speed breaker, or anything on which the bike was dropped, but still an alloy bend is very uncommon.
#mileage might vary from 25-50
That depends upon the tuning, and riding habits.

Front yes, it is, but RTR coupled with the rear disc, outperforms FZ in twisties where it's drum dies after heating up.

FZ is better for city for one reason, the bottom end torque, it excels in that, on flickability front, RTR is better than FZ.
Apache cost of maintenance is high compared to fz..
NO.

on the flickability front the wide tyres of fz gives perfect road grip giving more confidence to flick.. apache tyres are not much grippy.... I am talking about the 160 dunno about 180.. half the time I use apache I found the flickability part of fz better..
1 thing more apache has a very sporty position.. some people might have problem of back ache...Riding, loving and enjoying my lord of the streets.. FZ-S...

Im not getting into the RTR vs FZ scene again but i can give you some of my experiences with my FZ
Alloy Quality
Many ppl have reported bent alloys so its fair to say tht YAMAHA alloys are weaker but i have gone through some crazy pot holes above 60Kmph and haven't got my rims bent
Mileage
FZ generally has a poor mileage but it also depend upon your tuning
when tuned to a richer mix you can expect around 30-35 a med mix will give you 35-40 and a lean mix can give you 40+ and coupled with smooth riding maybe around 50
Low end torque is a beauty!
Front disks are great and coupled with a normal rear drum, braking over all is very good.
after 5k on ODO im yet to face a serious vibrations...even at high speeds its really smooth
@5'7 and 70kgs ive never found long tours on the FZ uncomfortable except for a numb butt!
and i haven't faced any Misfiring till now
Stock Tyres are also pretty good
Good LuckLast edited by RanjithMN; 04-30-2010, 09:20 PM.Smoke rubber, not tobacco.

OHH!!! I forgot the GREAT TVS tyres.Originally posted by krates View Poston the flickability front the wide tyres of fz gives perfect road grip giving more confidence to flick.. apache tyres are not much grippy.... But swap them with MRF's or a soft compound one and take both the bikes to track or ghat section or onroad with repeated twisties and then you'll get my point.
FZ gives you great feedback around corners with very POSITIVE feel from the rear when it Decompresses while coming out of a lean but it's upright position and heavy steering coupled with power trailing off at high RPM's robs the show, plus the rear tyre that covers so much ground while sticking beautifully to it that one has to work real hard for the directional changes only to find out the guy who was riding the RTR has already reached the finish line. The Magician"

apache is more of a racing bike and fz is a city bike so choose which one you want..
