    My opinion

I own an FZ but have ridden the 180 RTR.

    Comparison

    FZ Apache
    Less power More power
    Less performance More performance
Average throttle response Excellent throttle response
Smooth engine Not so smooth engine
More refined bike Less refined bike
Good handling: stable, responsive Less stable but more responsive
    Good tyres Bad tyres
Good headlamp, easy to upgrade (DC) Good headlamp, can't upgrade
Slight lean forward, not too sporty More lean forward, more sporty
Good front brake, average rear Both brakes good, better bite

The FZ is nice and I enjoy it but it doesn't have enough power to excite like the Apache. Mileage-wise, both are about the same.

    Conclusion
If you want a bit of everything and are prepared to pay for it, the FZ is the bike. But if you value performance and fun more, the Apache 180 RTR has to be it.

If perfomance is not important to you, then just go for the FZ.

Even i was in a dilemma & was very tempted to buy the FZ. But i needed something that gave other bikes, a run for its money. So i got the RTR 180 which again costs the same as FZ & comes with a rear disc.

it looks good not like the silver chromed guards which are standard on other bikes....

and with the choices given i will go for the FZ as it is better looking than an RTR (subjective though), easy to handle in the city plus the low and medium end power is amazing you can actually pull the bike from a speed of 25kmph in the fifth gear.... plus rtr is a bit small bike for a 5'9.... although rtr scores in top speed and efficiency because of the FI.... (wish I can get an FI mod for FZ.....)
Ofcourse there are crash guard available, what I meant is if they are wide enough (in length) as compared to the handle bar... if so, please post some pics

              Thats some nice touring man!!

FZ is like a blunt sword as compared to the RTR, for the simple reason that it was never meant for the razor sharp accuracy that the RTR has!
+1 on the engine smoothness and the handling of the FZ...

Precisely my point, my souped not-really-160-CC-RTR still gives me about 54KMPL!!!

Very good comparison, though I still find some points being over lapping...
Also one small disagreement is the headlamp...
IMO the headlamps of the FZ is amongst the worst in the industry, probably as bad as the ZMA, CBZ, and the RTR on the other hand has a brilliant reflector... throw in a better lamp (actually not needed) and you can put other bikes to shame!

                Thanks for all the responses.

I took both out for a test ride yesterday. I found both comfortable to ride. Couple of q's.

                1. I had trouble changing the gear to neutral in Apache but it was a lot easier in FZ. Am I doing something wrong is that how it is?
                2. For FZ, what is the risk of the Electric start not working after say 1 - 3 weeks of not using the Bike? Since it doesnt have a kick start I wont be using the bike daily but only occassionaly this is important risk factor for me.

dunno bout that but even my frnd who rides a rtr says my gears are smoother and easier to engage...so must be the gear box or the setting of the clutch that might be better in the fz...

minimal....as long as the bike is driven regularly as in once in a couple of days that will not be an issue...it has a low maintainence battery...so dont worry....

To ride or not to ride?? is a....
                  very very stupid question....

                    1. Yes, Apache gears will be a little hard in the beginning. As you pile up the kms, they would get smoother. Moreover, i actually like them like that. At high speeds, ghats, etc. the feedback is spot on. You will be 100% sure the gear has slotted.

                    2. Hmmm well, that depends on the battery condition, really. You might not face this issue when the battery is new, but you could have issues once the battery is old. It would be a good practice to start the bike once in a week or so.

My Opinion: Both bikes are amazing. You cannot take away anything from either of them. Go for RTR 160, after you have confirmed FI is not an issue in the bike and can be serviced easily, else RTR 180. Spend the saved money on proper riding gear and new tyres.

All the best. Keep us updated.

                      Hi Tappa,
I agree with your point in the difficulty changing the gear to neutral. I have a RTR-FI i am facing that issue dont know if its present in all apache's. Even i was confused in the beginning choosing between RTR and FZ. I choose RTR-FI because of 2 reasons performance and Efficiency,so i can forget about other minor negatives in apache compared to FZ.But since u travel less mileage wont be a problem for you Only if you require that extra performance from the rtr go for it. Else go for the FZ u wont regret.

About the FZ battery I would like to say I have left the bike for 1 week and 3 days after that I started it just started as normal in winter days though I have to do choke start..

And there is a method if the self start doesn't work that put the bike in the first gear hold clutch and push bike a little ahead and then leave the clutch bike will start..

Fz has another method just make the bike stand on main stand and roll the backwheel and do something I forgotten this one ask the FZ dealer there...

Apache ROCKS if you can suffice with the vibs and suspension issue..

And FZ rocks if you want great styling, Awesome ride experience and many things.. sacrifice on little power stuff

Now go ahead and choose your mean machine..
Riding, loving and enjoying my lord of the streets.. FZ-S...
