Just needed some information... I haven't been able to save enough money for a jacket and that's the only safety gear (as mentioned in the first post) i'm lacking. I have the knee and elbow guards, gloves et al.

So do i need to get a jacket with shoulder, elbow and back armor before i can join you guys on such rides?

Hey there... actually yes!!!
You need to have armored jacket before you start attending rides.....not cause we are bikers or have a big shot thing but its for your safety!!!!! You should be protected at all costs when riding!!!!!!!

Any thick jacket along-with elbow guards is sufficient.

Well i do have a thick jacket... In fact i'd gone on a ride to Lavasa today morn

Its more of an insulator than a protector against road rash... But is it sufficient? Should i post a pic or two?

If you are going to join for our rides in june then probably you can buy a riding jacket instead..that'll be much better.

When you come for the meet today...you can ask many ppl where to go shopping for riding gear.

Saad Since you are leaving at 1 pm, in that case i would not recommend you via amboli ghat as the ghat closes at 6 pm and night riding is a bit risky you see.

Other wise if you leaving early than ride straught till nippani and take the route via ajra--> ambolim --> sawantwadi and goa total distance from hinjewadi to panjimi is 452 kms.

Nops I dont have any other option but to leave in a couple of hours from now...

If you are worried that your GPS will take you on the wrong route.. just dont start it before you reach the toll gate at Nippani. After that, your route depends pon where you eventually want to end up in Goa.

Nops not actually worried. Nokia OVI maps are fantastically accurate, especially on highways...
In cities, I found mapmyindia really better...

Commonly used routes:
Route 1: Pune - Mahabaleshwar - Poladpur - Khed - Chiplun - Ratnagiri - Sindhudurg - Goa. Lot of ghats and mostly NH17. A bit dangerous as said by DK, especially when night riding is involved. But scenic.

Route 2: Pune - Kolhapur - Nipani - turn right and leave NH4 - Amboli ghat via Ajra - You hit NH17 at Sawantwadi. Only one ghat on NH17 beyond Sawantwadi and then you enter Goa. 4 lane roads in most parts once crossing Goa border. Safer and Faster route. But since you are leaving at 1 pm Amboli ghat can be dangerous after dark.

Route 3: Pune - Kolhapur - Belgaum - Goa. Again a safer and faster route. But this way you enter directly in South Goa. So plan accommodation accordingly.

Not all but most POI can be done in 3 days in Goa(shortest trip that is).
Day 1 for North Goa.
Day 2 for South Goa
and Day 3 for shopping etc.

Some POI - Agonda beach in south goa. Pune bliss. Cabo de rama fort near Agonda. Amazing view from the fort. Mangashi and Nageshi - ancient temples. Colva beach for water sports and white sand. All these places are from south Goa.

Others from central and northern Goa are Old Goa churches - not to be missed, brilliant architecture. Res magoos fort(spelling not sure). Calangute, Mapusa, Vagator beach. Anjuna beach for night life. Dona paula, Mira mar - two beaches near Panjim.

Reach nippani toll naka where your mobile says you welcome to karnataka roaming customer and than take right turn.

As mentioned by Ketan go for route 2. Avoid night riding; I have visited Goa 4 times by that road. calangute beach is 451kms from chandani chowk by this route

Staying in Amboli for the night is not a bad option either. The JRD hotel is decent. There is a forest trail behind the hotel that's delightfully spooky at night. Also, the little cottages across the road from the hotel provide awesome malwani food if given adequate notice of a few hours.

It would be a 2.5 day stay at Goa, so plan not to waste time in between...Nonetheless, would definitely keep this in mind...

I have booked Nazri Resorts which is situated between Calangute and Baga, NORTH GOA

Just have a few queries to all who are reading this..

1) What if I take Kolhapur > Kasba Tarle > Radhanagri > Phonda ie NH4 till Kolhapur then SH116 meeting NH17 on Kochi Panavel road and then NH17 till my destination.
Is it better (safer) than going through NH4 till Nipani and then taking the Ajara route via Amboli till my destination....

If no, then I will stick to this NIPANI > AJARA > AMBOLI route....!


2) I have OVI maps, still, does Google Maps mobile version have any provision of 'CHOOSING' or 'ALTERING' a route suggested by Google...!

I don't know if it's too late to reply but the answer is..

Even this route is fine. The reason I didn't suggest this route because as most of the riders here said that riding/driving on NH17 is very risky these days, this particular route involves a bit more of NH17 than the other suggested routes. But if I am correct then with this you'll enter NH17 at Kankavali. and beyond Kankavli there's only one major ghat that is at Sawantwadi. Just be careful near Sawantwadi as the roads get very narrow there and huge tourist buses create some problem.

EDIT: I was suggested the same route by a fellow Mumbai xBhpian when I went to Goa last time. Phonda ghat on SH116 is FANTASTIC, especially in rainy season and Winter.

You better take this route Reach kolhapur --> Enter city towards right and head towards gaganbawda --> Kankavli -->It meets mumbai -Goa highway.
