But which year was this? Because as of now, there is no snow in yumthang. Saw pictures of yumthang clicked less than a week back in some other xbhpians orkut profile.

And yes, I started the trip from Kolkata. The route in short was : Kolkata-Gangtok-Baba mandir-zero point-Hili (India-Bangladesh border)- Kolkata. It was around 2500 kms and 10 days. Ended up spending 3k on fuel and about 4k on everything else.
Bro don’t know what is right now, it was 3rd week of March 2008. And during this season the snowy weather starts any time any day suddenly. AFAIK this weather comes between March – May or June.

        Ok I was expecting same around 2.5k KM and 6-7k for that trip. My expectation is: Kalimpong> Gangtok> Changu> Nathu la> Mangan> Lachung> Yumthung> Katto> Zero point> Darjeeling

        • One suggestion, do not miss Gurudongmar if they allow you. I was told by the army to show my permits to chattan brigade (2kms before Lachen). And they turned me back. Permits were for two and I was riding alone. They pointed this out and told me that riding solo would be too risky as very few tourist cars were going there at that time.

Another useful resource is this : Rediscovering India on two wheels - Page 8 - ADVrider

          Specially for Gurudongmar.

                .
That is a HUGE process. First you'll have to go to the directorate and apply to Joint Sec. who will then give you two letters. Then you will have to go to the Army, who may or may not grant you permits (I had to visit Black Cat Division HQ thrice to get them done) and give them one letter. And you'll have to give the other letter to Sikkim Police who will also give you permits. The process took two days. Hectic. Getting permits even for ladakh is easier than this I guess.

And you will need permits for everywhere, even changu and north sikkim. This is the reason why :

                              • A word of warning. The summer heat is rising like hell, n after 10:00 Am if ur still on the road, be prepared to face the hot summer loo. Its scorching here in Shantiniketan as well. so If u guys must come, I would suggest u come here n stay the night n head back early next morning. otherwise, the heat u face during the day, will take a toll on u by evening, n U will be drained completely, unless of course u r ace tourers.
@sunny9830687955: Boss, U can get here on a half tank-full of petrol n same for going back, U will roam within Shantiniktan a bit, something like 20kms or a bit more depending on how much u wanna roam, food is relatively cheap, 30rs for a veg meal, lodging ke liye U guys will have to let me know wats ur final plan n if ur staying the night or leaving by evening, only then will I make arrangements.do keep me informed about this trip.
