Citing slightly unsuitable condition of the Salt Flats, Triumph Motorcycles will attempt to break the current speed record on two-wheels – 376.8 mph – in mid-September while trying to set a new speed record of 400 mph which they had earlier planned to do in August end.
While the surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats is still good enough for many speed runs, but given the scope of Triumph’s target, the British bike maker has decided to take it easy and do it next month.
Earlier this month, Triumph had successfully done a practice run of 274.2 miles per hour with Guy Martin as the pilot on their Infor Rocket Streamliner. This is the fastest Triumph has ever gone with two-wheels anywhere in the world setting a new personal record. This has given a great confidence boost to the whole team that the final target will be achieved as well.
The Infor Rocket Streamliner is powered by two Rocket 3 engines that are modified to jointly produce 1,000 BHP of power at 9,000 RPM.
On this announcement, Matt Markstaller, Designer of the Streamliner said, “We achieved a great deal during our test week at Bonneville and feel we are in a great position to move ahead with our record attempt. Guy settled into the streamliner very quickly and impressed us with the speed in which he mastered both the motorcycle and riding on the salt. While conditions were some of the best I have seen over the last few years, we feel there is still some room for improvement. When chasing a record such as this on two wheels the conditions have to be the very best they can be, to give us the greatest chance of achieving the speeds we require to set a new record. We feel that waiting a few further weeks will provide us with even better conditions and put us in the ideal position to make our record attempt.”
