If you remember it right, a few days ago BMW had revealed what it called the Concept Stunt 310 – their concept stunt bike based on a new 300 cc bike BMW was developing for emerging markets. The concept was a stunner – something that would set your pulse racing. But, yesterday the folks at BMW revealed the real deal and dropped a bomb on the market! They have a unveiled the G310R naked bike, their first less than 500 cc roadster, which in BMW’s own words has, “neither too little nor too much of anything!”
The BMW G310R has a 313 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves and two overhead camshafts and is fed electronic fuel injection. The capacity of 313 cc results from a bore of 80 millimetres and a stroke of 62.1 millimetres. It makes a healthy 34 horses at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm and tips the scale at 158.5 kg. The G310R is supposed to be good on fuel economy as well. As visible in the pictures, the ride posture is relaxed and comfortable making it a handy tool when munching miles is the order of the day. BMW also claims this bike to be nimble and easily maneuverable to fight the city traffic.
The bike is completely built up from scratch and takes BMW to a segment where it has never been before. The bike also takes some design cues from its elder siblings like S1000R like the small headlamp and headlamp fairing. The BMW G310R will be packed with features like ABS and USD forks as standard along with rigid tubular steel frame and a long swinging arm for a high degree of ride stability. The braking at the front is taken care of by a 300 mm single-disc with radially bolted 4-piston fixed caliper. The rear has a 240 mm disc with a 2-piston floating caliper. The G310R also has a LCD display panel to display a wide range of information.
What is more important from an Indian’s perspective is that this bike is direct result of the partnership between TVS and BMW. The bike is designed by BMW but will be manufactured by TVS in India where TVS’s expertise in low-cost manufacturing will be used to keep the bike’s price in check to make it more affordable for developing markets like India. TVS will also come up with its own version of the G310R which will be stripped down of some features to keep the costs further down and which will cater to a different market segment.
Like we said earlier BMW with the G310R will be venturing into an completely new territory with this smaller capacity bike to reach out to a new section of customers aspire to own the brand BMW but don’t have enough monies to own it. While they’ll be taking help of TVS to keep the costs down, TVS will also be learning a few things from BMW’s engineering about making higher capacity bikes a- a win-win situation for both, but the Indian bike enthusiast will gain maximum out of this venture. We wish them all the best and just can’t wait to lay our hands on this new beemer.
