Government is planning to tighten the two-wheeler emission norms as 80% vehicles sold in India are two-wheelers and they emit nearly four times more oxides of nitrogen (NOx) than petrol cars. The new new emission norms are likely to be announced later this week.
Earlier this month Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport Minister announced the timeline to rollout BS-VI emission norms.
Government official said,
“Studies have suggested that pollution caused by two-wheelers is very high in cities such as Delhi. While we support the industry as it is a vehicle for middle-income groups, two-wheelers need to comply with stricter emission norms.”
Out of 1.97 crore vehicles sold in India in 2014-15, two-wheelers accounted 1.6 crore. In order to reduce the environmental impact by two-wheelers, the government is set to announce more tighter emission standards.
According to government, NOx emmision limit for BS-IV petrol car is 0.08gram/km but for two-wheeler it is 0.39 gram/km. BS-IV norms for two-wheelers have been set and will be effective from April 2016 for new model and April 2017 for the existing one.
Government has already declared 1st April 2020 as deadline for cars to adopt BS-VI emission norms. But now it is expected that BS-VI standards will apply to two-wheelers as well. The announcement on new emission standard will be made later this week.
