The kerala High Court has ordered the state government to take strict action against people who are using modified motorcycles. According to the experts of Motor Vehicle Department (MVD), the altered vehicles are one of the major polluting agents in the city.
Justice C. Chidambaresh said,
“The court directs the state to take stringent action against motor bikes customised by removing silencers, mud guards and sari guards. Any variation shall be viewed seriously and registrations of such vehicles will be cancelled.”
Following the court orders, Motor Vehicle Department officials and Ernakulam regional transport office booked 30 Enfield motorcycles owners for altering their bikes.”
Naufal, Motor Vehicle Inspector said,
“Earlier, this brand of motorcycles created noise pollution. Adhering to pollution standards, the company is now manufacturing motorcycles with less noise. But, those buying Enfield wants the earlier sound. So, they alter silencers immediately after buying an Enfield, There are many centres across the city which alter silencers, handle bars, etc. of bikes. They also fit high voltage lights. These pose a threat to fellow motorists and pedestrians. The alteration may also lead to creating health issues as well.”
The modified vehicles, especially the motorcycles with altered exhaust are one of the major polluting agents in the city. According to kerala State Pollution Control Board, the fuel emission possess high risk to ozone layer depletion.
Recently Motor Vehicle Department, have seized around 190 vehicles and suspended their fitness certificates citing road unworthiness.
K M Shaji, RTO said – In order to get the suspension of such vehicles revoked, owners have to switch back to the original parts.
