  • Hi, I am planning to buy a cycle. Previously I had a Hercules Rockshox with front suspension.
My max budget for a cycle is 20,000. I am interested in MTBs only.
The bikes I have an eye on is the Hercules rodeo and the Firefox colarado. Please help me to select between these two.
Rodeo is cheaper compared to colarado.
Any other suggestions other than these two?? Does anyone of you here have a Scott. If so how good it is???

Neither of the above. What is your intended usage? In that price range you can get some decent bikes. Which city are you in?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

My use is mainly on road and the roads are not so good. I am from Kerala and the place I live here its a hilly area (that's not the reason I want a MTB) the terrain is not always flat. There is lot of uphill riding.
But I just want a full suspension bike.
Please feel free to suggest other models than these.

Before you start worrying about which model. First understand a few basics about cycles.

For road use, you need a road bike or a hybrid, not an MTB. However bad the roads may be.

For Hilly use, you do not need want an MTB. You want a road bike or a Hybrid. MTBs are much heavier, with thick knobby tires which are a pain to ride uphill on. You want a light bike, with thin smooth tires to ride uphill without too much effort.

You do not want a full suspension bike What you want is a bike with no moving suspension. As that is dead weight you will be lugging uphill.

What you really should be doing, is waiting for the upcoming issue of the xBhp Magazine, read it and then go ahead and buy your bike

Thank you Monk, I will try to do as you said. But I have ridden bikes with thin tyres before, and every time I felt the ride horrible. But MTB ( our desi Hercules) especially with air pressure reduced gave me the best ride. Thats why I am a bit inclined to this.

Apart from the weight what are the disadvantages of a full suspension bike??

Broader tyres with less air pressure will surely give you a plusher ride. But when you are struggling to ride uphill and you see a guy on a Hybrid breeze past you with almost no effort at all, then you will feel much more pain than a pothole can ever give

The full suspension on a bike costing less than a lakh doesn't work. They do not aid in making your ride any more comfortable than a rigid suspension. But they are much heavier. So Full Suspension has zero advantages but many disadvantages.

An honest question to you. Have you ever ridden a quality cycle (Hero and Hercules don't come in that category currently) ?

No is the answer, that's why every time I wrote its a Hercules. I know our bikes have only the look and nothing else.
I have ridden a Scott and Schwinn, but only for a short a distance, both had fat tyres with lockable front suspension.
The bikes were so light weighted and easy to ride , that's what I felt.
In between what is the advantage of a lockable suspension??

If you have ridden Scotts and Schwinns then you have a good idea of what a real cycle should feel like. You obviously rode MTBs, considering that they had fat tyres.

Lockable suspensions is something very useful to have when you are riding on mixed surfaces.

When you are off roading or riding on extremely broken roads, then you unlock the suspension and let it dampen the shocks being transferred to your arms. But on the times when you are riding on smooth road and while climbing uphill, you lock the suspension. Because an unlocked suspension absorbs not just the road shock, but also some of the energy that you are putting into the pedals. So if you can get a lockable suspension bike in your budget, then take it.

If you have any local shops in your city where cycles are sold, then go and test ride them. Get an idea of what you like and feel comfortable on. You will then be in a better position to make up your mind regarding which cycle to buy

This I have experienced in my old MTB when climbed uphill, the suspension goes down.

This is one question I forgot to ask! What about the availability of spares for these bikes?? Are these available easily?
The place where I stay is a small town. The cycleshops here even doesn't have a Hercules rodeo. Then you can think about the availability of other brands.

I have to go to a city like Kochi to get something like this. I am asking whether the shops selling these bikes supply spares too as I am planning for long term use
What about consumables like tyre and tube? Is it same as that of our local bikes??

Well you are in the same situation when I wanted to buy a bike. I got a friend of mine in Bombay to buy the bike for me and send it down by Gati. Alternatively you can contact some retailers in Bangalore who can courier the bike to your doorstep.

About the parts availability, well it is possible to use local parts, but as a temporary solution. Mostly the quality of local parts is way too inferior. But on the positive side, you can buy parts for most entry level models from online stores. Or make some good friends in Bangalore, Pune etc who can buy and ship to you

Can someone suggest me a bicycle. I am 24 years, weight 95 Kg and 6'3'' tall. Basically the bicycle should be sporty and stylish and should fit my height. Even if i can take to my workplace that would be great (its 9 km one side). My budget is 10k-15k.

Please help me choose a bicycle. I am newbie in this arena.

Try Rockrider 5.0 !! I think that suits you and i think cost less than 15K.

The btwin Rockrider 5.0 from Decathlon India is the best bicycle available in India at Rs. 10,000 price range.

I had checked out other brands when I was buying my bicycle and I found the Rockrider 5.0 the best available in India in that price range. I have been using it for 2 years now and am very very impressed with it.

                              It's quality stuff..!!

From what I have heard, they have discontinued the Rockrider 5.0 with the My Bike. But some old piece might still be available.

But I will say what I say to everybody. In 15k you will get a much better second hand bike. Try that option as well. Depends also which part of the country you are and the bike's availability.

Also at your height, you are going to have a hard time getting your size, dealers will try to sell you whatever size they have in stock. Be scared of the dealers!!
