Guys is there a difference between jailbreaking and unlocking an iphone ? so my friends phone got locked once again after being jailbroken ... is der a way to avoid this , he struggled for 6 months without an unlock , his was the 3.x OS version ... I heard the newer 3GS ( which i'm plannin to get ) which works on the iOS 4.1 will get updated regularly and hence can get locked easily , with no unlocks out for it yet ... any ideas to avoid this ?

de phone which we get from a legal apple store or any apple support outlets with full payment r fully factory unlocked..so there is no restriction to use it with any sim around the world,these phone will never get locked on updation,,,thy just need jail-breaking process to install the 3rd party apps.. jail-breaking is the process to install 3rd party apps apart from itune app store.
if u r not having a factory unlocked or legal iPhone then its not advisable to update it till the unlocking or jail-breaking software is out in de market.

^^ thanks man ... But apple doesn't sell factory unlocked phones anymore , my cousin got one recently and it had an airtel lock , they had only airtel and vodafone locked iphones .

Another question , this updation process is automatic through itunes right ? Can you manually control if and when you do want to update the phone ... or is it like for the ipod where it automatically searches for an update and does the job ?

there are certain limitations put in place by apple on all iPhones...
which restrict read & write access to just a small part of the media partition.

Jailbreaking opens the entire iPhone file system for use.
post jailbreaking... you can read & write to system files/media files.

Locked iPhones are "locked" to a specific network/ service provider.
Unlocking an iPhone lets you place calls with any GSM service provider by inserting different SIM card.

Once Jailbroken... avoid connecting the phone to iTunes/Updating the OS.

your phone won't lock.

not really... ur iPhone will only get "Locked" if u connect to iTunes/Update the OS

Isnt it illegal in India to sell operator locked cellphones? I mean this rule came waay back in 2003 if I am not wrong.. You can go over to the office of your service provider and demand the phone be unlocked. Such practices are not allowed as per TRAI guidelines. If they still don't comply and unlock make a complaint to TRAI and force them to give you a new iPhone

Apple never sold iPhones in India.

it's the service providers who sell the phones.
even the ones sold at apple reseller outlets are service provider specific.

Airtel & Vodafone iPhones have been the only one's sold with warranty in India.

OS updates for an "under warranty" iPhone can only be done via iTunes.

i'm sure Vodafone & Airtel are more than aware of TRAI guidlines...

Reliance/Tata/MTNL Dolphin etc. have been selling locked phones.

so does this mean that i cannot even connect to itunes to add music or photo transfer ? or can this be done through another application ?

U can connect a jail-broken iPhone to iTunes to transfer any stuffs,,,the only thing u shouldn't do is updation..an illegal phone will get locked after updation...a legal version will never get locked.thzz de difference.
There r third party softwares neither than itunes to transfer music,apps & videos.but i don't think there is a software for updation other than itunes.

Is Samsung Wave S8500 worth buying? Hardware is good but what about apps? I use apps like opera mini 5, youtube, adobe reader, zip manager, bolt browser.

its a great phone bro...its has got all de app's which u are looking for.the hardware spec is one of the best in the market.Its de best VFM mobile ur gonna get.close ur eyes and go for it,,u gonna love it for sure.
