Brilliant looker, but ≈ 6500 bucks for not much of an upgrade doesn't sound viable.

Hello people,

As I was looking for a second hand CBR250R ABS, I have got a lead in Pune, which is May 2017 registered and has run ~1000 kilometers and the owner is quoting 1.4L first time without negotiations. Maybe I am downright lucky to get such a super deal or there is something fishy (can't help but have second thoughts). Anyway, I am going to see the bike this Sunday, and will be taking a friend who owned a CBR in the past and a CBR mechanic along with me so that I get to know everything that's wrong and right about the bike.

Still, do we have any links for "PDI" for a second hand bike? Maybe in a printable format?

Also, I will be generously undertaking the maintenance schedules and everything that will keep the CBR in pristine condition for years to come, but as you all are very experienced in this sector, do we have some 'hatke' tips to go that extra mile in taking care of the CBR?

Also, if there is any CBR group in Mumbai, I would love to be connected to them.

P.S: Sorry if the above points are covered in this thread, a big exam is staring at me right in the face and I won't be able to take out time to read every single word in this thread right now. (Even if I wanted to)

CBR was discontinued after April 2017 due to BS3 fiasco. If it is May 2017 registered, it 'could' be under a second owner Which would officially make you the third owner.

Yes, I totally forgot this point! Thanks a lot for the heads-up!

I could use this point to further bring down the price. Saying this, would it really matter if I intend to keep the motorcycle for long?

Nope, I don't see the government pushing for any outright ban on BS3 vehicles so you should be fine.

Please suggest what can I do?
To the best of my Knowledge , I feel you have to Flush and change the brake fluid . How long since you had done this ? normally brake fluids need to be changed once in 2 years for reliable operation. With CBR ABS this means complete bleeding of the old fluid and refilling with new DOT 4 brake fluid.
Get it done with good ASC with knowledgeable mechanic .
Good Luck.

Hello All,

It's a privilege to come across such threads and know that extremely knowledgeable people take out the time to know and experimenting their motorcycles inside out, gaining even more knowledge in the process and then putting it across in such a beautiful format. Thanks a lot shv18 and psr Sir and others for this thread, and aargee for the main thread going for CBR250R.

I was almost teary-eyed myself when the thread came to an end, and the CBR at the end of her ownership under Shivang Sir, and I wish that other members, who have parallelly carried out experimenting on their CBR would keep updating this thread with their experiences, it would really be a 'gurudakshina' from us (those who have learnt) to the thread.

Hence, in an attempt to keep the thread active, I would like to post my experience in switching over to the CBR, and furthermore keep contributing as much as I can during the course of ownership.

Disclaimer: Long narration.

I owned a 2016 Royal Enfield Classic 350 before, and back then, I did not have the general awareness required to get the gist of the motorcycling experience (purpose, maintenance etc) before purchasing a motorcycle. But because, my father always wanted to have a Royal Enfield at home, we decided to surprise him with one at this 50th birthday. But numerous trips later, it was established that although categorised as a tourer, it required multiple modifications before it can be a little comfortable for long distance touring, and I was fed up with the restrictions I had with her. So a decision was made to part with her, albeit at a good price, because I had nurtured her with timely maintenance and cosmetics. Touch wood, I never was required to spend a single rupee outside of the periodic maintenance needs on her, and she never threw any tantrums which required any part change.

Picture 1: Condition of my Enfield even after 2.5 years and 19000 KM's on her.

So, the search for an able tourer started, and I shortlisted three options which would suit my budget and my needs (of course this time, reading every single line on the internet) before judging a motorcycle. I literally noted down the pros and cons I came across on every forum, every video I watched.

The three options were: 1) Yamaha FZ25 2) Pre-owned Dominar 400 3) Pre-owned Mahindra Mojo 4) Pre-owned Honda CBR250R ABS.

I was busy reading the reviews, and that's when I came across this thread, and the other three options were thrown out of the window, quite literally.

And ABS was a must for me given our conditions, and hence the FZ25 and Mojo were already cut off.

So, search started for an used Honda, and I decided to take it slow, and as I had already gone through this thread once, I knew I had to be patient and thorough so that I don't end up buying a not so well maintained CBR just because I go overboard with excitement.

But as luck would have it, I came across an ad on Quikr the very next day, and it said a 2017 Honda CBR250R C-ABS for sale, with just 889 KM's on the odometer with an asking price of just 1.40 lakhs.

I was literally stumped, looking at the photos and the price and the KM's run. I decided to check her once.

Long story short, the motorcycle was found to be as good as new, of course, not without proper procedure of PDI from the points mentioned at the start of this thread and available on other forums, and also confirming about the 'very good' condition from the famous mechanic Laxman from Rohan Honda as he himself has serviced the motorcycle for the two services carried out during the ownership of the first owner. The owner promised to hand over the motorcycle with the third service done, and hence all the paperwork was cleared, token amount paid, and I couldn't stop grinning for a second after that.

I got her home on the 19th of December, 2018, and it has been a joy ride after that. The current odometer already stands at 2512 KM's meaning I covered almost thrice the distance already in 35-40 days, than what the previous owner had covered in 1.5+ years of ownership. [emoji41]

It was good of SHV 18 to have shared all of his experience of the search, and owning a CBR250 . The detailed explanations, trouble shooting and finding alternate parts were shared to help other members in true Xbhp spirit. It also gave me a chance to make my grey matter work and share my little knowledge along with Shv18. The thread is kept alive by members with queries and Sharing their personal experiences , which are more than mere ownership experience.

In essence the thread is all about learning and sharing , with the hope that members ,in future, will be benefited from the knowledge share in this thread.

Hello All,

Thanks for letting me fiddle with the thread.

To not make the previous post super long, I intend to break the trivial experience till now into two parts.

I got my hands on her on the 19th of December, 2018 in Pune. As it happened, one of my sister's in Ahmednagar had a crash on her Activa and she was constantly saying she wanted me alongside her. Sister's I tell you, could make brothers do anything for them.

So I got the test the CBR's capabilities on the route from Pune to Ahmednagar, and boy was I impressed with the power delivery. Mind you, I'm no light weight, a good 100+ kilos and still he didn't mind. I kept the speeds sane (80 to 90 KMPH) with occasional bursts above 100 KMPH as I was riding a completely different motorcycle and didn't want things to go out of control. But oh boy the surge of power had me bowled over. And the brakes were so confidence inspiring (ABS coming from a drum-disc brake setup of the Enfield) So I had a gala time.

So Pune-Ahmednagar-Dombivli (around 500 KM's) made for a good "understand her" experience and I was already in seventh heaven.

PICTURE 1: The smile says it all. Believe in ATGATT. Soon to invest in either a budget touring pants, or a good knee pad.

Soon after, for my 'other' sister's destination wedding at Dapoli, I started searching the road conditions and general know-how as we were going to the take coastal route.

I wanted to come on the motorcycle, while my parents and relatives trudged along with their respective four wheelers. 2>4 for me, always.

From what I heard, the road conditions were horrific, pothole ridden and what not. Was in two mind as if to take my CBR through a torture test, but then on further reading came across a quote "You're only handicapped if you want you to be, a Honda can take you places"

That's it, decided that I won't fear the unknown, and decided to change the oil to Motul 7100 10W40 (Tried hard to source to Shell Advanced Ultra, but it wasn't available anywhere) and also carried out the famous earthing modification. Also with the engine oil change, I changed the filter to Yamaha FZ filter eyes closed because I totally trust the information being shared here. So these three changes, and I was ready to saddle up.

The roads, as usual, were horrific, even with a hint of a good patch a random pothole series would come up, and I actually ended up taking the CBR through some of them at good speeds and I almost had my heart in my mouth with the subsequent thuds. But she trudged along just fine; the only minimal issue was of brake squeaking owing to the mud/dirt bath she had during the course of the journey, and also as the roads and the subsequent days were too close to the sea, might be the issue, but that's the only 'issue' I faced along the ride. No tantrums, would smoothly run at a moment's notice, would drop anchor at a moment's notice.

So all in all, the first ride was great, and let the pictures do some talking now.

So, to move on to the after ride experience and planned changes in the motorcycle:

Issue:

1) I'm observing a marble in a tin can 'brrrrr' like sound which starts from 4.5K (very mild at this RPM) but is the most profound at 5.5K RPM. Doesn't come in any other RPM and also when tried to record, no such sound emanating when the bike is idle and then revved to 5.5K RPM.

No drop in performance observed, and no other issues whatsoever.

Contacted psr and gopakumar s pillai Sir over this and other CBR threads and will carry out the suggestions of

I. Tightening of all the visible nuts and bolts
II. Sticking a double sided tape between the fairings

As I do not have the necessary tools required to carry out the processes myself, I will visit a reputed Honda ASVC (Vihaan Honda, Thane) and carry out the troubleshooting. I believe this is trivial and a loose nut bolt or panel gaps somewhere and not something major like CCT or shims. (At least I hope so)

I heard that Abdul from Vihaan Honda is reputed and will take the bike to him in February first week for the solution.

Along-with the above mentioned issue, I intend to carry out the fork oil change, and brake oil change, as I have read good reviews here and the CBR250R thread when switched to Motul Fork Oil and Dot 4 brake oil, hence will switch over to the same.

Picture 1: Motul Fork Oil 2 bottles, Motul Dot 4 Brake Oil, Putoline Tech Chain lube and HP Gear Oil, along with Kerosene for chain cleaning.

I'm trying out different chain lubes, with Putoline Lube almost close to exhaustion and Gear Oil ruining the wheels and the surrounding area although considerably reducing the chain noise.

Will try Garage 52's Dino Lube next and pretty much satisfied with Kerosene for chain cleaning purpose.

Also purchased a bottle of WD40 for occasional spraying over the electronic terminals to keep them in the pink of health.

That's it for now, will update after the service, and planning a ride to the Statue of Unity soon.

P.S: With the reverence to Rimula R4, is it advisable to carry out ONE cycle of Rimula R4 treatment even now when the motorcycle is fairly new (2522 KM's on the odometer at the time of writing)

As I've read the ZDDP forms a better protective layer over the engine internals, senior riders please advise.

If given a go ahead, I will carry out the treatment during the next oil change as the Motul 7100 oil is only ~800 KM's old and still in it's original colour.

Thank You. Until next time.

Good write up @Manas . The CBR250 has a much superior suspension compared to other bikes in the range. Good that you have done the earth wire mod, since it guarantees that your bike will not stall or have lesser power at random due to Earth Fault.. The CBR250 like the Karizma is at higher gear ratio at it's top gear, so may not accelerate well after 130 Kmph , which in my reserved opinion is adequate . The Rimula R4 can be used as a regular engine oil for every change, and the change interval becomes increasingly greater as you use it . A read through the thread will give better understanding of usage and change intervals . Use only DOT 4 oil for brakes.Chain needs to be lubed at every 800 Kms normally , and more often under dusty conditions. Most of common maintenance and trouble shooting had already been discussed in this thread by Shv18 , and if any further clarification is required , a note here or in PM will be sorted by informed members .

Good luck.

Thank You for the kind words psr Sir.

Yes, I have gone through the thread, just wanted to confirm if the Rimula R4 treatment can be carried out at such an early stage of engine life i.e. ~ 2500 KM's. Would like an affirmative just for clarification.

Hope I can do justice to the quality of the thread while posting the observations, and can't wait for the next big exam to finish so that I can learn the troubleshooting myself from the CBR service manual and start understand the electricals too in the flow.

Already have the paddock stand and basic maintenance toolkit, and what remains is the theoretical know-how.

Thank you all for letting me keep the thread going.

The Rimula R4 can be used even in a young bike with lesser Kms. In fact using it during run in can also be done , due to it's ZDDP content which helps in proper set in process , though the set in Kms will increase due to the oil's additives reducing the friction between moving parts. Your CBR250 engine At 2,500 Kms is set in , and no need to worry about set in process.
Good Luck.

Hi Team,

I recently purchased a pre owned CBR 250r and I'm looking out for an experienced and genuine CBR mechanic in Mumbai. I stay at Malad West and I don't mind travelling a little far as long as my bike is perfectly serviced. Would prefer a mechanic who knows everything in and out about the CBR. Please help me guys.
