Hi All,

so as requested, i finally managed to find sometime and start my thread related to new acquisition under Superbike And Imports sub-section on XBHP.

Thread Link: https://www.xbhp.com/talkies/superbi...nja-650-a.html

And yes my "Littlebird" Honda CBR 250R is still with me. I will eventually put her up for sale.. just that having a hard time thinking about parting myself from her if you get the drift.

Anyways I hope that this new little venture of mine is able to help all those who wish to discuss and learn.

Hello CBR owners!

I currently own a Karizma ZMR(2014) and I am looking to upgrade to CBR250. Following are my queries:

1) I am concerned about the low end torque of cbr250 as i am a very sedate kind of rider and hardly revv above 7500rpm. The karizma is unbeaten in this regard. I use my bike for touring and a short commute daily. In the hills ZMR is a monster!! I hardly have to revv above 3500 rpm to climb a steep. Even 3500 is too much..the bike climbs steeps at even 2500rpm and trust me I Do Not Change Gears on an Incline unless the rpm falls below 2000rpm!! It is phenomenal! Heck! i weigh 72kg and my brother weighs 92kg.. I was in the basement of a mall and coming out on a steep entry.I put the bike in first gear with both of us on it..it climbed fine..i revved to 3500-4000rpm and put it in 2nd gear..it took the second gear like a BOSS and was still not just maintaining the speed but accelerating on the steep. I was surprised to my core!
question is how is the driving of cbr in hills? i am sure it does not climb like a zmr but how is it? How many gear changes are required?

2)Would the bike really be an upgrade considering its only a difference of 25cc?

Hi buddy,

the answers you seek are more or less already covered in the first page of ownership thread of Honda CBR 250R (Link: https://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcy...-cbr-250r.html) Refer to the respective post links over there which should hopefully provide you whatever you are looking for.

1) If you want low end grunt then know this... CBR 250R has been designed to be a rev happy motor and the actual power band builds up only from 5,000 rpm onwards. ZMA/R has a better low end torque engine but not exactly a rev friendly motor. To climb up the mountain based on the powerband mentioned above the required revs will be higher and depending on the degree of incline, one will have to select gears accordingly... no short way to answer it.

2) I always tell my fellow rider buddies :- never ever judge a bike based on paper sheet data and specs. Test ride it, get a feel of it and then decide whether you like it or not. Being an LC engine it fairs far better in high load conditions then an air cooled engine and with Nikasil coating on the cylinder liner, unless one is stupid the motor is more or less indestructible and will clock many kms without breaking down.

Hi All,

so the story so far with my CBR has not ended yet. I have decided to take her to one more little adventure of mine involving the Himalayas again! I admit ever since, Kawasaki Ninja 650 has landed in my garage i am giving her a lot more attention than i would normally have to my Honda CBR 250R. But i guess my CBR 250R deserves a lot more for what she has done.. taken me places, pure off-roading and crazy reliability at remote locations i thought she possibly couldn't have made it to. But she has surprised me every time so without a doubt i believe i need to do her justice by taking her for at least one more long ride and hopefully in the due process shall update the thread about Shell Rimula R4 HDEO oil + Yamaha FZ longterm report post the completion of the trip.

until then.. stay tuned..

Cheers,

QUICK UPDATE:

................
As of now, i intend to clock atleast 4,000 kms more with stock pads so that any little scoring marks left in the rotors due to usage of run down pads by the previous owner are completely chamfered off by the OEm ones. I shall then do the needful and install the Brembos and report my observations here. Till then watch out for more on this space.

Cheers,

Literally i can say i was impressed and wanted have this beast.

I got a good deal of 2014 STB model @ 80K planned to inspect over this weekend.
BTW, is it a good deal ? ( I believe since the BS4 model has relaunched the resale value will not go down ,since we now dont have spares issue)
Will follow this bible and hope i have this stallion very soon......

Thanks, and lets have this thread alive
Hi,

thank you for your kind words. without a doubt all the credit goes to psr sir for sharing his insights willingly and a crazy rider being open to the idea of trying things and blabbering everything on this thread... If it has benefitted a lot of members and riders who wish to know more about this "silent housewife" then i believe in a true sense this thread has served its purpose!

coming back to your supposed vehicle, so long as the telltale signs are ok (you may refer to 1st and 2nd page of this thread for cues) i think then it should be a good buy. However, if given a chance i would highly recommend the ABS version... not because of the ABS per say but because of the progressive braking bite and confidence it gives to the rider. The Nissin triples in the front and single pot in the rear are worth the extra money one spends on this bike. My two cents of course...

I went today to see the used bike, it was 16300 kms on odo, I test rode but couldn't go beyond 3rd gear due to small congested road.
The rpms raising was smooth and very linear power ,i felt the turbo power post 6k rmp, the clutch was effortless, but downshifting was bit clunky btw 2nd - 1st gear.
so after the ride, i checked for the engine oil level it was within the marked range. But I also noticed , there was a deep skidded mark on left side of the fairing and rear plastic below pillion seat side, so it was very obvious the bike was skidded very hard such that fairing plastic are deep, but he told me it was fell down due to rain, i was not convinced with that part.
also i noticed oil leakage on the engine head cover on left side, oil coated like film i can touch and see it. when i raised rpm upto 7-8 k there was no engine noise, shim or valve tak tak noise, it sounded as normal.

so my questions are :
1> if the bike had fallen towards left , will that cause any chassis alignment or front fork pulling a side during braking
2> if its only 16k odo ridden, why there is oil leakage on the engine head valve cover side

with all this things in mind , I have to respond him by evening whether i am ok to buy or not.

So please share you're thoughts.

Thanks
Siva Kumar

Hi sincere apologies for replying so late... have been very busy with personal commitments. Well without seeing the vehicle of interest in person or any supporting pics it is very difficult to gauge it if you know what i mean. A simple drop should ideally not lead to deep gauge in the fairing unless of course if it had fallen on uneven surface. Secondly one should check out the clip ons and see if they are bent, is the bike swaying left to right or showing symptoms of being unstable at certain speeds. One should try and check the rear swingarm and the front forks carefully. See if the front tire is also swaying when rotated freely. If the damage is only related to fairing for a mere sum of Rs. 2,000-2,200/- is relatively a cheap fix.

Anyways, personally for me cosmetic looks are not that important anymore, i would always look at mechanical side vis vis form and functionality. Any scratches that have come while travelling, with my latest exploits i consider them battle scars.

I hope you do get the vehicle which will serve your purpose well. All the best buddy!

Your fan relay is faulty, replace that and issue will be resolved. Do it sooner else disconnect the battery to stop the fan running.

I have taken the same bike which i asked for the suggestion above. The bike has been serviced periodically with Ananda Honda ASC bangalore and the odo is 16k. I am planning to go ahead to Shell ultra FS on next oil change with FZ oil filter. or probably should I go with shell HEDO treatment , need your thoughts on it.
I have few questions
> there is oil leakage on the engine head cover and its covered with oil quite well , i have checked the oil level for 500 kms its didnt decrease , will the head gasket replacement fix it or something to worry about ?
> when i slamm front disc @80kmph , i feel the front end drops very stiffly and i have feeling its pulling one side , even during the turings the handle bar is not holding correctly, i can feel something wrong in the cone alignment . should we need to inspect the cone set, ball bearings and free flow of the handle bar left and right.

only these 2 things are haunting me, else apart from that its an unbelievable and amazing machine, i feel like glazing over the air @ 100kmph and its one of the best experience i am getting on this state of art machine.there is no shim, valve, chain tensioner noise from the engine bay. few screeching noise from the left side fairing ,will inspect for any fittings on next service.
once again thanks Shivang and psr sir, without this thread i wouldn't have got this beast and i am so happy and learning from this bible like Ekalavya
Congrats on your Bike . Did you find from the previous owner regarding the head oil leak ? as to from when it had started ?
That said if the oil level is not coming down and engine is good , there will not be much to worry. Please try to get a clear picture of the leak and post it here so that we can get a clear idea..It could be gasket, or it may also be the head nuts becoming slightly loose due to use( though rare).
Try to use the Shell Rimula for the next 4,000 Kms or at least two changes to ensure a cleaner inside which will reduce vibrations and difficult gear shifts...You would have seen how SHV18 had to use it multiple time to get a cleaner engine ,since the previous owner had not been good at maintenance...Of course now he uses it for upto 3K + since it is doing quite well in his engine.. Shv 18 will be able to give a better perspective .
Good Luck

Sir, i am staying in Hosur Tamilnadu, and everyday commuting to electronic city around 50 km up and down.
enjoying the ride and trying to practice rev-matching while downshifting , buts i am not able to do it properly , i need more time to learn it.
Regarding the cone-set steering issue, i lifted towards a side with side stand and checked the handle by moving either side, it was freely moving both sides without any jerk or tight. I aslo checked the second way, hold the front disc and shaked the bike front and back , i am not able to find any jerk or movement on the clip ons.
but still i get weird feeling when turning towards right side, its not smooth turning its gives me jerks and pulls aside.not sure why i am feeling heavy at front. or its that i am not used to this heavier bikes since i am coming from pulsar.

thanks

Looks like Your top head gasket is leaking, ...so it is not a complicated fix....ASC or mech must open the top head and then change the gasket. It is better done with ASC, and you can run with it without issue as long as the oil level is maintained....you can also try tightening the head bolts a little to see if it had worked loose due to vibration over a period of time..
When the steering stem balls bite into the racers, due to tight fixing , or due to running through pot holes regularly,it forms small dimples which will restrict and make steering notchy and sometimes wavy handling through a curve. So try changing the stem (cone set) bearing with the holding racers first..change the fork oil in both forks and fill ONLY upto recommended level.
Good Luck.

my sincere apologies... have been caught up with personal life and commitments so not been able to check out nor update this thread... a long post is due.

I believe @psr sir has already covered a lot of details pertaining to solving issues related to your new vehicle.

Coming back to the issues you have mentioned, here are my observations:

1) The oil leak, the indication is clear that the top head cover rubber gasket is leaking. It is a simple fix, i believe i have shared the picture and the cost of the part along with the part no. somewhere in one of the posts on this thread. Changing/replacing the same will stop the leakage for good.

2) I believe it has been mentioned on this thread that once in two years or about 15,000 kms one should ideally take out the old fork oil, get the innards of the front fork cleaned and fresh oil should be poured in. This will drastically improve the handling and fork dive by a greater margin. Though bear in mind: stock fork set up is designed to be bit on the softer side which aids in better bump absorption on our moon cratered roads.

3) If the handlebar is veering towards one direction than one of the possibilities - steering head coneset is on its way out. The whole OEM unit will cost approx 2300-3000 (inclusive of labour cost at SVC). I would also recommend inspecting the front tire bearings and the front tire itself for uneven wear.

Hope this helps..

Cheers,
