  • Pulsar AS 200 Excessive Coolant and Engine Oil usage. Have I been sold a lemon?

I bought the bike on 8th of March 2016.
I noticed that the coolant was at about the halfway level. However since I had an exam the following day, and I thought "heck, how much coolant is it going to use anyway till the first service, which is at 45 days" so I didnt throw a tantrum and I brought the bike home.

I rode the motorcycle very little, partly due to the fact that it was on temporary registration, and I couldnt do out of city rides.

I gave the bike for service on 24th of April(46 days, but they couldnt seem to care about the one day delay, as it was Sunday the day before), at 250 km.
The coolant level, i noticed, was well below the minimum mark, and I expressly told them to top it up. And I told them apart from that, it is going to be a regular first service.

Thee needful was done, and the coolant and the engine oil were topped up all the way till the window allows one to see. (The coolant was above the maximum mark, but I couldnt really care, TBH.)

Fast forward to today. 13 June 2016

Odo at 844 kms. Less than 600 km after the first service

Again, over half of the coolant used. Almost an ml per km.

Engine oil from full to almost empty in 600 KM. I was about to take it to Delhi for a ride. I would have had a seized engine before I reached Jalandhar(90 km from my house)

Have you checked for leaks? Yes sir. I have. My bike sometimes remains parked or 3-4 days at a stretch, and not a single leak under the bike.

I expected so much from my return to 2 wheels after half a decade, and its ................... *sigh*

    Query Approved

I don't think you have been sold a lemon. You have been sold a Bajaj

Jokes apart, if you can't see any leak on the outside. Then your patient is suffering from internal bleeding!

    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Errr. I don't expect you would make such a noobish mistake. But since you haven't had a bike for 5 years

I hope you had the bike on the main stand, not on a flyover and not with a hot engine!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

The AS 200 is sold without a centre stand. So the bike was on side stand. And as for the pics, they were taken after 7 hours of parking the bike. So yeah, on a cold engine.

Exactly at what The monk mentioned.. I am sure you had it in even level road while taking the measurements. On the other hand, you can download a level app and place the level on the tank and ensure the levels are on the middle before checking the oil levels.. This is in case you haven't tried yet.. otherwise, I doubt it is a lemon..

I took the measurements while the bike was parked in my garage. Which is flatter than the wankehede pitch.

And the measurements were taken 7 hours after i parked the bike. So on a cold engine.

However the bike does not have a centre stand, so it was on the side stand. So was the ground flat? Yes. Was the bike flat? No.

And i cant really hold the bike upright, and take the pictures.

The first thing to do is to get the oil indicator ring into a horizontal position. Right now its pointing upwards.

Once that is done, hold the bike upright and wait for a couple of minutes, then see if the oil level is above the lower mark of the ring.
Same for the coolant - it should be around halfway I think. Maybe more, check ownership thread if someone has details.

Lastly (and in my opinion) since you bought a Bajaj, these type of irritating things will keep happening. You gotta learn to fix them yourself because all service centers (of any and all brands) are usually crap.

Edit: you're not supposed to take pics just check that the levels are fine.

That is the only way to measure close to accurate if not accurate..

I'm sorry to say this sir, but an engine consuming almost its entire engine oil in 600 km is more than an irritating this. It is borderline unsafe.

Hyper from the photograph you have shared of the engine oil, i don't believe it is low! If you have clicked that picture while it was on the side stand. When the bike is straight up, then the oil should cover anywhere between 30 to 60% of the window (Approx., since the oil level ring is fixed incorrectly on your bike).

Please get a main stand fixed, i believe it comes as an accessory, very useful while touring. Until then, get someone to hold your bike straight before checking the engine oil level.

Does the manual also show the oil indicator ring pointing to the side and not horizontal???

So either that's the way its supposed to be or sloppy attention to detail.

Read the typos in the manual. Simple lack of attention to even the most obvious details.

The manual has the oil indicator ring positioned incorrectly. Almost every other pulsar i have seen on the road, has it wrong.

Did you miss the red mark i put in MS Paint to demonstrate the current level?

On a side stand it means nothing!

Hold the bike straight man. How difficult is to do that?!

Instead of using MS Paint, it would have been smarter to use a main stand or a helper to demonstrate the current level!

Would you be able to squeeze the tyre and tell me how much petrol is there in the tank I don't think so!

Oh! my bike's indicator is the same as shown in the manual. The markers are supposed to be parallel to the ground? !!
Now that I think off, i always found the indicator markings weird. If we go by the image in the manual, then the oil should be covering almost 80% of the viewing glass!

                            @HyperRetard

I am not sure whether your bike was perpendicular to ground or not. But, if it was on the side stand then the coolant level is ok. Cant determine the oil level on a side stand, try draining the oil and you will know for sure.

It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

Okay. So here's the xBhp suggested brief for tomorrow.

Go and get a main stand installed, and get an engine oil top up, leave the coolant as it is, because its enough for the time being. And then we will monitor it. Right?
