Last week - my friend was bitten by a dog while on his bike.

We had to keep watch for 3 days to see if the dog does dies. If he were to die it would be very bad( he didn't)

Anyway my question is how to you keep these animals from chasing you ?

And if they do chase, which happens often after midnight when the streets are empty, what is the best course of action. speed up ? slow down ? blow horn ?

His problem seems to be genuine, really. If you cannot help, then, please do not make fun or post OTs.

i have all noticed that dogs get cranky in late night and chase you . if you know the place has dogs then try going slow so they dont wake up or zip away keeping your feet high

Well, I have been facing the same problem for quite some time now (I come back home from work by 2 30 AM!)

For the first few weeks after buying the ThunderBird TwinSpark, The dogs began chasing me at every corner - Tried slowing down, honking hard or revving up - though revving up took me off from the dogs, but at that time - i almost fell because i wasnt seeing the road but the DOG!

            So, My only advice is:

            1. Either change the route back home (Which i have started doing - It now takes 9 Kms instead of 4kms, but being connected by better roads, it almost takes the same time for me)

            2. Complain to the local Dog catching officials

            3. Rev up as soon as the dog starts barking.. No other go

First of all, I am not sure if there are any permanent solutions to this problem. 'Cause even if you manage to scare them one day, they might chase u again the other day. But yeah couple of things do work.

Couple of suggestions from my side:

-- Most simple suggestion, If the road ahead is clear and quite smooth, then you can simply zip away in speed. Problem solved for that day!

-- Now IF the road ahead is not really good, which means that you cannot speed, then it could be a problem. In that case, stop your bike at a safe distance from the dogs, find few stones which are handful to hold (u know what I mean!!), and throw them with all your might at the dogs (aim them if u want not a problem, if they get hit it'll be like a bonus). One more important thing, run a little bit and shout at them as you throw the stone!! Believe me, its sounds funny BUT it damn works!!! I have done it

Take your bike closer to one of the dogs if possible while zipping away (be careful and watch out for your legs while doing that, this is also where leg guards help ). SEE, the point is to scare them away, do that couple or bit more times, and the dogs do remember these kind of things, and they'll remember that you are the one they don't have to mess when they see u again! But yeah, it's not a permanent solution though!

@Satellite kid: There is no real need to hit the dogs with those stones. Most of the times, street dogs just run away even seeing someone bending towards the ground (to pick stones). They just know what's going to happen next.

@Ananth: Revving the engine is a very good idea. I am not sure about the results with the Indian bikes, but in a couple of occassions, I have managed to scare even a group of street-dogs with the revving of a four-cylinder 1000cc (and 1300cc) engine(s).

The best thing to do is slow down to a complete halt when u see a dog approaching towards you from the front, when the dog is behind you or on you left or right just raise your legs and ride away, this is through a lot of experience and an accident when i ran over a dog, nothing happened to the dog because I was at a very slow speed and i was saved because of my helmet, If you come to a complete halt and stop the dog will step back and then you can start very slowly in 1st gear and as soon as you have a safe distance from the dog accelerate and carry on, I love to ride in the night because of the empty roads but these dogs make life Hell. I even got down from my bike once to chase a dog away with stone that i picked up from the road

Well, I try to do what my 350cc could do best

On a serious note, my work - office - work commute is just 8 kilometers, but has 50 speed breakers with no proper road! Since i cannot rev up all the time, i take a lengthier but better road - which take the commute back home to almost 9 kilometers! Thats the only thing which worked and nothing really could be done to take away those stray dogs!

He he... I and my roomy call it the Dog race. We have it every night. The solution is not to speed up, but to slow down(not stop). Being a dog lover and a owner, dogs are not chasing the rider but the rotating wheels of the cycle, bike or car. So, if you find a dog on the road, never ever look into its eye, that calls for a challenge and the dog will chase. Keep your eyes on the road and keep riding normally. If the dog chases, slow down, it will turn back for sure. Speeding up will only turn the whole thing into a game and make the dog chase.

It had happened with me so many times while coming from office late nights , earlier i used to rip my bike from dogs but thats a wrong decision because by doing so dog runs faster and it increases the chances of crash because you are just looking at dog by turning back .

My advice to you is Firstly Don't rip your bike when such thing happen
                          2. If dog is trying to chase you just stop there ,dog will also stop there. You might have to do this twice , dog will stop chasing you.
3.When you stop , just show as if you are throwing stone at dog,He or she dog will ran away
                          4. When a dog is chasing you turn your bike towards him and start chasing him, he will ran away like anything

P.S- All these steps may sound funny but all of them are very well tried and tested. You can go for any one.

Crazy but true ! This is indeed a problem for me too.

                            my routine involves the following:

Knowing where these dogs usually camp out. i come with minimal engine noise as in i depress the clutch and cruise . If i see a approaching dog i REV the engine with real nice .Well this just scares them for a second or two. But in that time i throttle away. with my legs ready in a kicking position.
