What has our lives come to galli ke kutte se bhi darr na chahiye

Does an air pistol kill a dog? Dont want to invest 600-700 on a pistol if it doesnt kill.

An air pistol is not powerful enough to kill a dog, it can only hurt or maim. However, if it is aimed at vulnerable body part it may kill it e.g. shoving it inside the ear and kaboom!

Disclaimer: I love dogs to death and hate only those street dogs that irritate motorcycle riders while trying to bite etc..

If you are patient enough this method is the best as given on this page:

Trust me it works, I normally stop the bike, and wait for a while, then revv up like crazy which scares the $hit out of them. And yes, once in a while when I am in a bad temper, even turned the bike around and chase them

This is what my father advised me to do. Stop & stare at them, dont show them you are scared, etc. But when a pack of stray dogs are showing their dracula teeth (and God knows what diseases they carry) doing that is a little tough man.

I havent had this problem, till recently. Few weeks back couple of stray dogs chased me on my road. Gosh! my heart beat must have doubled its pace

@nitingirish - mate if you dont wanna get flamed, dont mention such things. Dogs can be handled quite easily. Need to keep your cool and not freak out.

Ooh! I see potential for serious flaming in the past few posts. Nevertheless, although it is inhumane to injure an animal, I believe humans cull scores of animals and justify it in many ways.. to prevent disease, to promote more manageable numbers, to prevent human fatalities etc. Though some of the posts mentioning using an air pistol seem to be the extreme(and illegal) approach, we need to focus on the more moderate approaches and prepare to arrive at a reasonable defense against such an incident.

Although none of us would think of shooting a stray dog to kill it, simply because it chased us, I believe there must be a provision to defend ourselves from bodily harm when attacked by these animals. We will never be prepared with pepper spray or a gun at hand when such an attack happens, what then? Do we simply allow the attack to happen, and suffer the consequences? Or do we plan ahead, change our route, keep riding times within day hours and other such compromises?

I for one would hate to see an animal injured. But if it came down to animal injury/death over my own, there is no question that I will prefer to defend myself with whatever means at hand, and deadly intent. That being said, I hope reason prevails, and all comments about acquiring pistols to kill or maim dogs are forgotten. Instead, please let us apply our minds to arrive at a solution that will both protect us, and keep us out of jail.

                    Cheers,

                      Couldn't agree with you more.

I can't believe the double standard being pulled by the so-called 'animal lovers' here. If I try to get rid of a gang of dogs, I'm being cruel, but when a group of mad rabid dogs chase me down, bite me, and I die off rabies, or even worse, get eaten alive by them, then it suddenly becomes okay? Am I missing something here?

If I, for one, get attacked by any animal (that includes dogs), I will defend myself, and will KILL the damn thing if the need arises. Does it seem like cruel act to you? Too bad. I value my life more than PeTA's bullshit 'ethics'.

There are many people we are scared/irritated of, do you go around shooting them as well. Frankly, it doesn't work that way.

Every day (I mean every working day) I travel at night at uneartly hours and almost always on my bike. Car on rainy days only.
The distance I travel is 25 kms almost.
I have been chased by dogs, baring their teeth at me. I will either rev up and outrace them or most often, I will just stop where I can. And look at them. If you have a couple of biscuits or a couple of slices of bread on you, just throw it at them. They will not trouble you henceforth. Just remember to keep giving them a tidbit every now and then.

I have been chased by dogs on numerous ocassions in the last 20yrs or so and yes I love them. They don't have anything personal against you. They are just following their instincts.

On a nice plain and empty road, I would zip espcially if it is a known route. Would never do that on a new route. Once a friend of mine was riding in a locality he wasn't familiar with, he had gone to drop a friend, was chased by dogs, tried zipping, didn't knew of the turn ahead, hit a wall and fell and the dogs just dispersed hurting both his body and soul.

The most sensible thing to do as per my experience is to slowdown and pay no attention. If they miss/ignore you, carry on. If they want to have fun with you, just stop and they stop in their tracks. Dismount the bike and they will step back, run for a couple of steps and they disappear.

I work odd shifts too and my work place is like 14-15kms from my place and there have been times when I went cycling. Well back in my teens/20s I could easily out cycle them but not anymore unless I have a safe distance. Good thing about a bicycle, you can always keep it between urself and the dog/s. The moment I stop, they stop, the moment I dismount they step back, pretend you are picking stone, they disappear. Instead many a times I have also tried calling them with hand and whistle signals and boy most of the(except for those alpha types) start wiggling their tails, they come looking for some food and love.

I guess a lot depends on the mood of the dog as well as the rider, once back in my college days I was chased by a pack, I was on my cycle, I raced the ranger, all but one of them gave up and this guy was so close and I had reached my top speed, I braked hard allowing the rear end to skid/screech and that finally scared it and it overtook me and ran away lol.

All said - the first time I do when I see those dog patrols is pray - kyun ke kehte hain - agar kismat kharaab hui to oonth(camel) per baithe to bhi kutta kaatega :P

Very well said! I feel like grabbing a gun and shooting all the dog haters here... but then it doesn't work that way either...

I really keep wondering what this dog phobia is like. Pune has gangs of dogs marauding everywhere and I'm often lurking around in the nights. Not once has a doggie bugged me in any way, either on foot or on a vehicle. I seriously feel there is something seriously wrong (they hate your guts) or seriously right (they fall madly in luv with you, on sight ) with the people who are being chased by all these nice pooches, all the time.

I know the story of a dog, who was shot by air gun.. The one who shot was my cousin, he got bitten by him previous day. Bullet hit the dog just above his rare leg. Injury got bad with time and he died after 6-7 days. note that the dog was short of a pet. I don't know if owner had taken proper care, got the news only after 7 days when he died.
PS. I'm not like my cousin , just was on vacation at their home.
