Why can't the municipality(dog catchers) take these stray dogs, sterilize them and put them in an unhabituated place. This way, both man and animal can live in harmony.

Scary/irritating people don't bite. Do they? If people injure you seriously, then we have the law to put them behind bars or such. There are no such laws when dogs maim/kill people. This cause people to take matter in their own hands.

Dogs are adorable creatures...as long as they don't bite. Maybe dogs are merely responding to their animal instinct, so are humans when they retaliate.

This would work only if such drives happen more regularly. In our area, such drives take place like once in 5 years. And they just give the dogs anti-rabies vaccines, that too by force, which only pisses them (the dogs) off even more, causing them to misbehave even more.

Took the words right off my mouth.
If dogs attack me for reasons as trivial as riding my bike, they're following their instinct, but if I hurt them in my self-defense, I'm looked down upon as a criminal? What the hell!

By the way, the slowing down/coming to a halt theory doesn't work when the dog is mad. My brother once stopped his bike when he got chased by a dog. Turned out the dog was mad, and his teeth ripped through his thick leather boots. And I won't even talk about his medication and other inconveniences. Actually, I will. He had to spend a lot of time and money for his medication and vaccine. Moreover, he couldn't go to work for many days as he was unable to walk because of the wounds. And my brother wasn't the only victim, either.

The best is to stop. They immediately realise that its no fun..they cannot chase you. Then start and move off slowly. Most people panic and try to lift their legs in the air etc and to the dog that's fun...let me chase him some morei

I dont mind dogs chasing me. I scare them by revving hard. But the thing which bugs me is they come in between the roads while driving. I have had a crash last month. Hit a dog at over 100 kmph early morning while overtaking an auto. The poor dog screamed a lot but dint die and went away after a while. My knee was hurt. It pained badly for over 2 weeks. I have seen many dogs dying on the roads by coming under the wheels of bus or lorry or car on my college highway. Almost 2-3 dogs get crushed under the wheels daily on my highway. It is really a very pathetic sight to see them in such situations.
I have seen kids and especially girls (of all ages) getting scared by dogs the most while walking. I just shoooo them away or pick a stone and scare them.
Once i tried to call the municipality people to take away the dogs. They hung up the call by saying elections are coming so they are busy with something else.
I will soon be sending an article to the local newspaper after iam done with my exams.

When a dog is alone then its fine to stare/show anger/chase/revv/pick stones etc but when dogs are in group then they are dangerous!
Its just like the diffrence between one hooligan and a group of Hooligans!!
So when one single freak dog chases me I just revv past him or either stop take a U turn and chase him till he's scared enuf or just stop and shooo him..
But when group of Dogs chase me then I simply run away as fast as I can.
Kashi has loads of stray dogs, stray cows, buffalows and any other thing which has the word STRAY in biggenning!
Once my friend tried to feed a group of stray dogs in night to get rid of em by love, biscuits ended but the fight started among dogs, at last they tore off my friend, months of leave, incredible amount of medicines and prayers brought him back on his legs!
He still needs psycatrist to get rid of those scary dreams of deadly dogs.
I love dogs and I have a doggy named Digo(he digs too much) but If the choice comes to I or the stray Dog then I would surely shoot the god damn thing without giving it any second thought...because I had seen the stray brutality very closely.
Though I never had been in such a situation and it looks like the stray dogs do love me

@to the Air Gun Guy- try the 50rs Mouser with small Yellow round bullets which wouldnt hurt the thing but will scare him well enuf so he wont chase you forever, its available in every toy shop!
But use it only when very urgent because finally the stray dog is a living being..

+100, it is the fault of the municipality and our own people who dump garbages on roads

It is not that dogs chase bikers only in late night, they are active in day time too. I have a view that dogs chase only when they are in group.

I have my own story of dog chasing in broad day-light, on NH-1D! You read that right, the famous Leh-Srinagar highway. There were these two *muscular* stray dogs that came chasing me. Dogs in higher altitudes look massive (thanks to their thick fur) compared to their low-altitude counterparts.

They were in no mood to stop chasing me and neither was I to stop for them. It was like an excitement for them; both competing against each other to check who chases better.
After chasing me for some 1.5 odd kms, they gave up (or rather their territory was over). However, the best part was that they didn't look serious. Guess they were concerned about the huge luggage I was carrying.

And the dogs didn't leave it there; they did give a scare to the next rider who was 2 kms behind me.
All men dream, but not equally. Those that dream at night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act upon their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible. - T. E. Lawrence

Yes, some dogs have "Chasing" as a habit (as if they were born for a Yamaha).
Normally, the dog's boundary is limited to some 100 metres (they mark their boundary by their piss and will never allow any alien dog or bike to cross that pissing limit). They chase within that boundary.

It appears that in that NH-1D the allowed pissing area is more

I own a standard 350 so the moment i slow down the thump becomes deeper and the worst part is if i am on a higher gear and the speed drops the thump is pure bliss. The dogs become even more hyper and starts jumping and running, then i have to clutch and accelerate the bike then lets out a roar and this scares them dogs away. Speeding does not help as dogs tend to chase my bike even more. i have not tried stopping as i am sure they will pounce on me.hehehe

The best thing to do is to slow down to a 20kmph speed as soon as you see the dogs in a distance. Works for me 100% of the time!

What I do is ride at 30-40kmph this should be enough to outrun them. It is good to be aware and to lookout for dogs in known area to be prepare beforehand as you approach… If there is a pack then have to be careful so to keep road in front clear..revving up can help with clutch pressed to scare dogs coming from front…
If they are chasing try maintaining distance to keep yours and pillions leg safe….RVMs helps a lot.. Suddenly accelerating can help in open stretched but could turn fatal in crammed roads..
It is no wise to stop or chase them back once you are safe and clear from there reach especially when confronting 5-7 or more dogs… u don’t know what they have in mind or if dog is carrying rabies.

Its better to slow down, rev up, make urself clear which side u have to go and then move fast...

                                Completely Agree with You.

A vet gave me another tip for riding at night - remove your visor, and if dark colored helmet then the entire helmet. Dogs chase when they get alarmed and dark visors/helmets aggravate their alarm.
