i used to face the same problem when i used to come from office at 2:00 am. there's a group of 3-4 dogs in my area....for first few days i speeded up my bike and avoided those dogs but one day one of the dogs was abt to come infront of my bike, so after tht whenever i used to reach tht spot i started riding very slowly at around 10 kmp/h..and wen dogs used to start barking i used to stop and fire them off... i did this for 4-5 days
trust me after that not even a single dog came across my way.......

the area i used to live before.. was a mad house full of mad dogs..with 3 or 4 or more group of 10 or 15 dogs atleast.. near the litter area and at a distance of 90 to 130 metres.. and every night they used to have some kind of party or something and my night would be ruined but.. ya i have noticed that slowing down and chasing them back, or revving ur bike helps.. rather than speeding away coz dogs have that mentality that they think every bike as a thief running away & try catching them. stopping may be dangerous too if the dogs are too mad or something

That dog seems to have got stunned by the stunner's charm and started barking when the owner came nearer to his bike.

the best thing one can do to stop dogs from chasing bike is slow down as slow as possible..

Slow the bike and stop. It will never come to you, as they can't CHASE (very important for dogs). Make sure it went back and ride again....

Lines above are from my experience..

As rightly said the best way to overcome this problem is to
                Stop instantly
since your on bike the dog will never attach anything which is bigger then its size.

since i'm a dog lover i wont do anything to hurt them.

IMO and experience I've had dogs chase me more on two-stroke motorcycles. I guess the grunt of the two-stroke exhaust is mistaken by the dog for another hostile and aggressive DOG .

Speeding up has worked for me but sometimes when the dog is a bit ahead of me and near my legs I just kick it. Don't get me wrong, I respect animals too, but it's better that the dog gets a harmless little nudge from my soft footwear rather that me getting bit and infected with a plethora of diseases.

Otherwise, have you considered taking a car or the cab to work?

one of my friend was chased by some dogs late at nite
he tried to speed up & after a turn he was looking back.
he bangged againts a concrete wall of a transformer yard.
his bikes front suspensions were in peices
front alloy wheels rim got seperated
                    & his forehead busted.
                    he is ok now
                    but with some lifelong marks

so avoid speeding up in such situations

the dogs will not harm you

                    they might be just saying
"do your PUC your bike is giving out lots of CO2"

I used to think so too. But no, they chase me even when I drive my car. Some stray dogs are just that way. Chasing all vehicles.

yeah I agree with you, dogs have chased me while driving cars and riding bikes, when in the car I try to reverse into the dog because I was very very ticked off with this chasing business every single day!!! But in the bike unprotected all I would do is look at the road ahead and give throttle, Dogs are territorial they won't chase after a particular point so keep your eyes on the road and gas the bike, if it helps lift your legs up.

                        • I used to get chased by dogs when I would drop my gf off. Then one day, she happened to feed a dog some food & the dog become friendly - I was with her that time and did my part in giving the dog food that was gonna go waste. The word probably spread in dog world soon thereafter that the person with her should not be harmed/barked at. Since then the dogs actually stopped chasing me! LOL......

Moral: If you can't beat em, befriend em!

But recently, I do get chased sometimes, though not always but sometimes. I think another pack of dogs has taken over that particular area!

                          • I travel back home everyday on bike... A good 16 km ride at 3:00 a.m. and havent been terrified a bit once. For record, i see at least 20 dogs whilst my journey.

If you notice while traveling in car, dogs try to chase the car for a certain distance,..basically they try to race with it and have no intention to bite the car or the driver..neither they want to drive

Since i come from rural area, where they have dogs for protecting the households... i know how dogs behave..

Trust me, if you happen to come across a dog or a group of them, dont get terrified, Just halt... I know you'll need lots of guts if you are first timer for this task. I tell you, they wont try to chase/race with you.

Golden Rule... slow down, let them feel that there's no point RACING with such a slow rider. Okay, let him be hero.. What you get is Relief! Everybody wins

                            • lol!
i really miss having the leg guards on my bike (R15)!!
on my way back home, dogs are like crazy, they chase anyone and everyone!
one fine evening when i was on the road back home -hardly .2kms away from home, i saw this dog on the road, he didn't seem to be in a mood of chasing, so continuing with the same speed, i was going, when suddenly he started barking and came so damn near my right leg, i thought that today is not my day!
but by instinct, i slowed down, revved the engine and wollah! he shy'd away!!!
so, i guess it is right to slow down..
what they would be thinking when you go fast past them is that you are scared of them and they'll chase you harder...if you slow down, they'll think you are stronger than them and they will let you go..

lol at the "chasing them back comments"!!
after monday and tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!!

slow down. always works. done that like hundreds of times over the last 10 years.

                                STEP 1. slow down.

STEP 2. whistle at the dog. :P

                                STEP 3. dog wags tail.

                                problem solved.
