HONDA UNICORN - ENGINE - Boring change
Hello experts,
My bike Honda unicorn, Ran for 5 years (45000 KM) (average speed 60 km/h)
Recently I found that Oil leakage in the Engine panel.
I visited Honda service center, to find the issue.
They said, Boring might be the issue.
And it should be replaced soon.
Kindly confirm me whether I have to go re-boring or changing the "boring sets" completely?
And also, I would like to know, after changing the boring sets, how it will impact the engine performance?
kindly help me.
regards,
Jayakumar M

Re: Honda Unicorn
I dug up my old unicorn after 2 years of rusting, floods ,lying around. Back in 2014 my 2004 unicorn needed a full overhaul , but it seized before I made a decision, I upgraded to a CBR 250, now I made a decision to either rework the bike or completely scrap it and sell it , only time will tell. It probably needs a complete engine overhaul, new crank, new carb, etc, if the engine is work able it will be a miracle, I'll post a few pics of my first bike, holds a lot of good memories for me.I hope to rebuild and bring back the engine to life

Re: Honda Unicorn
If the gasket is damaged, it can be replaced within 100 rs.Originally posted by kathi View Post
after 2 months i gave bike to my cousin he called me and said bike is stopped on road and not starting.
i told check some things, after that he approached road side mechanic, they checked oil level in bike, it was not there/very low.
mechanic opened the cylinder head cover gasket, it was damaged/torn completely at one point.
that's the reason for oil level low. i was surprised for misthinking that it will not cause complete oil leak.
..
i don't want to do major overhaul - cylinder bore/piston rings/valves.
what shall be done minimum to keep it running in decent condition as we don't want to run in this less mileage condition.
Permanent damage is already done to the bike because of running with low oil levels. Better to check the head completely with any trusted mechanic.
Or change the gaskets now and also monitor oil level on daily/weekly basis based on bikes running (KMs covered). Do the next oil change earlier than the regular interval and check if there is any improvement.

Re: Honda Unicorn
HI All,
my cousin owns a 2014 unicorn i had owned it first few months and he is using it after that.
Initially it had issues like oil leak at neutral switch, fork oil leak, clutch cable tight during handle bar turnings and many other problems in first two months.
i noted all those and rectified them in SVC.
one issue i neglected.
Oil leak from cylinder head cover gasket.
i ignored it because the leak was minor and since it is on top of engine i though oil will not leak fully.
i used to check oil level regularly and the level was perfect every time. so ignored about the oil leak.
SVC also didn't notice and addressed the problem.
after 2 months i gave bike to my cousin he called me and said bike is stopped on road and not starting.
i told check some things, after that he approached road side mechanic, they checked oil level in bike, it was not there/very low.

They topped the oil and started it.
now bike is giving only 35-40 kmpl, engine heating, earlier 50 kmpl.
he is very disappointed about the bike performance.
what shall i do.
bike is not smoking.
i don't want to do major overhaul - cylinder bore/piston rings/valves.

Re: Honda Unicorn
Bike completes 50000 KM Mark (6 years 3 months 3 days) on my daughter's first day to school.
Now I can easily remember when she joined her school.
Could't take a photo as it was raining when the 50000 mark came up.

My Honda Unicorne
Hello Guys . This is Rajib here. I have joined recently. I had some queries in my mind which I wanted to share with you .
I own a Honda Unicorn 2013 model .
Recently I have been facing some issues with my bike .I have visited the authorized Service Center couple of times but all they could come was a suggestion to replace the affected parts which is a very costly and mostly unnecessary option.
It all started two years back . While coming from my friends house I miscalculated my speed while taking a turn and fell on left side . Fortunately the leg guard took the blow . I skidded for couple of meters and came to a halt after hitting a divider. When I got up there was no damage (Thank GOD!!) except the right shock absorber fork seal was cracked and suspension oil was coming out. Next day I took my bike to service center and asked them to repair it. Also asked them to check if there was any damage to the handel bar or to the forks . After 4/5 hours I got a call from service center guys that my bike has been fixed. They said that the fork oil has been changes and the seal has been replaced. I checked the bike and visually everything was ok. When I asked them regarding the handle bar they said everything was ok. However things were not. I could sense something was odd with the handle bar . However I asked
One of my friends to check (he owns an Unicorn too). He said everything was ok.
After couple of months I could sense some wobbling while riding. Since then I have gone to the service center many time regarding this issue . First they said it was the problem with the rear tyre . so they opened the tyre and re-assembled it . However the problem persisted.
Again I went to the service centre . This time they said it was the problem at front . But no one could give a specific answer as to why this was happening. Also while riding I could here strange noise coming from the yoke . Hearing this the service center guys suggested me to change the cone plate and if possible my tyres . I did so.
Now after changing the cone plate I feel that the handle bar is bent towards left . Again I went to that service center guys . now they are suggesting to change the entire setup at front which will cost approximately 6000.00 rs .
I am at a loss . Should I again go back to the service center or take my bike to some local mechanic ??
Please suggest .

Re: Problem solved
Hi Sibun ji, I own a Stunner which i've ridden for 77k, just want to know if I can increase the bore size to 150cc by fitting the Acheiver's bore kit.Originally posted by sibun View PostI fully agree with our gixxer bro. Piston should have 0.20 mm gap between bore and piston without rings. For easier way to find out a piece of paper from a standard notebook can be inserted and nothing more. This is problem with new HONDA UNICORN and shine.
I have heard 2 shines straight out of showroom having crank sound. Also most shines are smoking in 30-40 k. This was not the case with the old shines. But from 2010 onwards i am seeing this problem. My friends Uni started smoking at 50k. The bore kit was replaced in showroom and after 1k bike started consuming oil. Then he came near me, when i opened the bore the piston has as much free play as your photos and piston was covered with oil as your photos. I then went to my mechanic and he said that all new bores come like this. Only solution was to Bore out or install new bore kit of achiever, we got a first oversize USHA piston and went for boring on boring and honing machine. The bore after boring was so tight with new piston that we have to push it to move, that too without rings. We have it installed and till now he has run another 50k and still no problem.
What Honda is doing is that it is keeping more clearance between piston and bore and rings is what seals the bore. The result is that bike feels free out of showroom, no special need of running-in, and also mileage is more. AS friction is less mileage is more. But the problem is after 10k the top end will decrease, engine will consume oil in small quantities, and what not, also piston slap will occur.
Now do not think me wrong but previous model unicorn(spoke wheels), shine doesn't suffer from this problem, even i feel the new activa will face this problem. Ride a new bike from showroom both Unicorn and extreme, you will see the unicorn will feel smoother and more free to rev than extreme, but after 10k extreme will rev freely and quite fast. Even my extreme took 10k for it to completely open up and mileage also increased slightly after that.
The video that you have posted it looks like a standard piston is sliding in an oversized bore. Your old piston which has run only 1k shows severe oil burning which clearly indicated that oil was seeping into the combustion chamber. This is the case with all shine, unicorns. Also you will hear the crank sound at only 40-50k. Believe me as i have opened a lot engines alone and also with my mechanic.
Even our stunner is feeling like that it is having much less compression than my extreme, i am not comparing it with my Joy as it will feel like no compression with my JOY. May be after another 5-6k i will see that what is the positon of the compression. Its because the stunner is feeling lazy to rev, although mileage is good at 62-65 kpl. Earlier the bike was feeling free to rev.
So the solution is to bore using boring and honing machine, and use 1st oversize USHA piston, get an acheiver bore kit or sell the bike and get another bike from other companies.
Thanks & Regards,
Harish

When will people start seeing that monoshock is a BIG GIMMICK. The charging and tuning of suspension matters. Try gas charged bike and then revert to oil filled to bike. You will get the difference.Gas charged suspension systems provide ample damping and quick return, Higher spring rate. All there helps in better stability.Originally posted by Shyam Narayan View PostThe best solution is to give it some time..You will get used to it.
. It's been 8 years through all ups and downs ..My back doesn't care about it any more..
I ride these bikes daily : 200NS , 220F , unicorn 2008 . I know the difference trust me. I tried whatever i can on uni to improve its ride ,but it will remain as it is , BAD.

Re: Honda Unicorn
If you are talking about Michelin Sirac, then yes it is a good tyre. But why use it when we all know that tubeless tyres are better and moreover they give us a relieved state of mind that we can keep on riding even if there's a puncture.(Just a suggestion from me)Originally posted by Ashik Asees View PostIs anyone using tubeless tyres in unicorn
If yes which one?
How is Michelin tyre with tube?
Apollo is now making bike tyres and Apollo as we all know is a proven name.
Else you can go for:-
MRF Zapper Y Tubeles
MRF VYED Tubeless
Michelin REINF Tube Type
CEAT GRIPP Tube Type
MRF Zapper Y Tube Type
The choice should me made keeping in mind how you ride and what roada do you usually travel.
Choose wisely, Ride Safe..
