One more thing that concerns me:
I see a lot of you mentioning the bike lugs at low rpms. I'd been Leh'D last year on beloved P220
I intend to take my RC to K'top as well next June
Something that concerns me though is, I remember myself not having ridden over 80kmph post-rohtang and all the circuit until i hit NH1. Rather most of the times I reckon the speed was 40kmph or below.
Now the P220's top gear can very easily glide at a speeds as low as 40kmph.
I am NOT comparing these two bikes but my concern is, the RC already has an exiguous tank, not more than 30kmpl mileage(best case).
Considering the average speeds in Ladakh, I don't think there will be many instances where I can shift upto the 6th or even 5th for that matter
How much mileage can I expect then?
Low mileage can definitely be forgiven considering the luxuries and Adventure the RC has to offer
    Main concern is the Range!
How many liters of surplus fuel will I need to carry?
D390 owners can tell more aptly

No trouble mate. Just keep the bike in appropriate gear and your fine. See the bike tends to force the rider to be in the right gear. I'm sure you'll understand it once you've ridden the bike for about 300-400kms but if you still have doubts just check a few posts back. I've given the minimum speed per gear of the bike but on an average you can expect a mileage of 30-32kmpl under or at 80kmph and about 27-30kmpl below or at 60kmph. Also the bike has an average of 30kmpl in the city but out on the highway I personally have achieved a mileage of 34kmpl and others say they got even better figures (not by much over mine though) but I suppose you would do good to carry another tank full atleast (about 500/- worth), just in case your wondering the bike has a range of about 270 odd kms from full to reserve on hard riding and about 290 odd kms on mellow riding. Also you're kinda buying the wrong bike for touring, I think the duke'll suit your needs better but again its your spine and your pain so happy riding.

your fuel pump sensor is shot. Tell them to change the fuel pump under warranty. It'll also improve the ride.

No point waiting I think. Showroom guys wont do anything if they have given the first service excuse.

So lets say you are in 40kmph , 4th gear should be more than enough to run around in that speed.
But mind you , the longer you run in lower gears the more heat it generates.

He he thanx bro Somehow naked bikes don't appeal to me :P
Was pretty happy with my P220. Done 66k kms in 3.5 years with minor issues
The rear brake never ever functioned and now even the front is a let down.
Also since I've just switched to professional life from student life, I don't find enough opportunities for long rides. Need to be able to do long distances in less time.
That's one of the primary reasons for switching to the RC inspite of being aware of some pain and inconvenience it will offer
Will probably switch, in a couple of years(when I'm financially better), to the Ninja300 or something new that creeps up by then

With my limited experience of having ridden my RC for about 600 kms, I am not sure if this is the best decision!! The riding position is not something you would call comfortable. Duke would be far better option in my humble opinion.

I'm well aware of it. Not very happy about it either
I'm fed up of non-responsive brakes on my P220 inspite of spending more than 10k bucks on them Also my monetary constraints allow me to stretch only upto the RC.
As I already mentioned, I'm so addicted to faired bikes that I cant even think of of buying a naked. Even if it makes perfect sense from my use-case(touring) perspective.
Also, as I mentioned I intend to use it only for about a couple of years. I know the RC means sore forearms, backpain, etc, but I guess I can live with it for a couple of years. Afterall we know insane tourers like Rohit Upadhyay who have toured on the R15 extensively and the R15 requires an almost equally stooping-posture as does the RC
                  Really appreciate your input though

Well I guess to each his own. But its not a matter of those couple of years you use the bike, its a matter of those few decades of sore back and paining wrist and shoulders that matter. But I guess you're right as others have done touring on much more uncomfortable bikes. Butt I am certainly not brave enough to try it.
Still if you're gonna go touring on the RC make sure to avoid very rough roads and any and all off road rides as the suspension of that bike has less travel on the front and is therefore more prone to shock oil seal issues on rough use than the duke.

Yes! I was going to point it out actually!
The less travel on the front is going to be an issue on bad roads
Anyways..booked it already. Decided there's no looking back
Anyways I'm in my inchoate career days, so touring wont be as extensive as it was back in college
In a couple of years when I'll have a heavier wallet, I'll opt for a proper tourer
Hoping for the launch of KTM 390 adventure!!

                          Hello xBHPians,
Booked the RC390 today (oops! yesterday) from KTM Bund garden,Pune.. hv been following this thread for last few weeks.. initially thought of booking RC200 but i wanted a bigger upgrade from the existing 160cc bike (RTR 160) so at last booked the 390.
wanted a bike for the weekend trips to the places around Pune and to ride on the highways, so i decided to buy 390 against 200.. for daily commuting in traffic i think RTR is good enough ( from the reviews from the owners figured out that riding 390 in heavy traffic is a torture for this bike)
will be watching this thread for the next couple of months.. eagerly waiting for delivery!
If you don't ride in the rain, you don't ride.

Speaking of range I think on normal highways a full tank in RC390 should give you ~200km but if you are talking Leh then it will be around 150km on reasonably straight roads and may even come down to just 100km on mountain passes. You would need to always have a can of fuel with RC390 in those thin air regions. I think the biggest drawback in KTMs is the tank capacity.
