Re: Honda Unicorn 160
No. It won't even touch even the chain cover nor the mud flaps. 120/80-17 is a possible upsizing. I have added the MRF MASSETER MSX 120/80-17.Originally posted by Shashank K R View Post120/80 will definitely touch the bodywork under the pillion seat.
The front can be upgraded to 90/80 or 90/90 maximum.

Re: Honda Unicorn 160
Hey guys,
My Uni 160 completed 2000 km today. I don't intend to do the free services as I think the local Honda SVC will **** up my new bike. I would rather get my bike serviced by my trusted local mechanic.
Nonetheless, before I give it for first service, I changed the oil today (for the first time). Now, I read that I should used 10w40 oil for the summer. But couldn't find it anywhere. The closest I could find was Motul 5100 4T Hybrid 15W-50. So I went ahead with it. I had read here that Motul 5100 was the preferred oil, but I had also read that initially I shouldn't use semi-synthetic oil, but I had no other decent option. I also couldn't find Shell AX5.
Did I do the right thing? Any future advice? Anything I should look out for?Last edited by ravihpa; 03-24-2018, 09:38 PM.| LG 24GM79G-B 144 Hz Full HD Monitor | Intel Core i5 4440 @ 3.10 Ghz | ASUS TUF Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 | Zotac GTX 1070 AMP! 15w50 is quite heavy for this engine. It will feel sluggish, though it will be smooth. Also there will be a drop in fuel efficiency figures.Originally posted by ravihpa View PostHey guys,

In very hot climates (35°C+), 10w40 is better. The 10w30 oil heats up the engine more and harshness also increases after a 10-15km ride. 10w40 is available in shell ax7, veedol super Swift and a few fully synthetic oils which I feel are overkill. Semi synthetic/mineral oils are enough for daily usage.Last edited by Shashank K R; 03-24-2018, 10:02 PM.

Good find. I had tried Zapper C 120/80 which touched the area under the seat. Maybe the curved profile helps.Originally posted by ajaysureshv13 View PostNo. It won't even touch even the chain cover nor the mud flaps. 120/80-17 is a possible upsizing. Yes, I could feel the engine harshness. It makes me sad I'll see a drop in fuel efficiencyOriginally posted by Shashank K R View Post15w50 is quite heavy for this engine. It will feel sluggish, though it will be smooth. Also there will be a drop in fuel efficiency figures.

What should I do now? I just dumped 500 bucks in it.
What were my other options? I could only find 10w40 in Motul V300, which is fully synthetic and AFAIK fully synthetic is not recommended for a new bike (2000 km).
Also, I saw Motul 10w30 but only in 800 mL, which the shopkeeper said won't be enough for my Uni 160.| LG 24GM79G-B 144 Hz Full HD Monitor | Intel Core i5 4440 @ 3.10 Ghz | ASUS TUF Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 | Zotac GTX 1070 AMP! Use it, not a problem. You'll have to change it later anyway[emoji13]. You could try 5100 10w30 next time.Originally posted by ravihpa View PostYes, I could feel the engine harshness. It makes me sad I'll see a drop in fuel efficiency

Lol, okay. After 3k KM I think I'll change?Originally posted by Shashank K R View PostUse it, not a problem. You'll have to change it later anyway[emoji13]. You could try 5100 10w30 next time.
By the way, can you suggest me what to get done in first service? The basic things I presume.| LG 24GM79G-B 144 Hz Full HD Monitor | Intel Core i5 4440 @ 3.10 Ghz | ASUS TUF Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 | Zotac GTX 1070 AMP! Re: Honda Unicorn 160
An oil change, cleaning the centrifugal oil filter and the oil strainer, adjusting the chain, cleaning and lubing the chain.Originally posted by ravihpa View PostLol, okay. After 3k KM I think I'll change?

I think 2000kms is very late for a first service though.

I agree it's too late. What else then?Originally posted by Shashank K R View PostAn oil change, cleaning the centrifugal oil filter and the oil strainer, adjusting the chain, cleaning and lubing the chain.

Re: Honda Unicorn 160
If the oil level doesn't go down every 1000-2000kms by much (as in there's no or negligible oil consumption), there's no need. Also check for any white smoke from the exhaust.Originally posted by newwannaberider View PostHi all. My unicorn 160 is 55k km run. Is there a need for an engine repair or overhaul now?
You might need to get some valve lapping or decarbonisation done though.Last edited by Shashank K R; 03-25-2018, 05:16 PM.

Please explain what is valve lapping? I'm not an expert in such matters. Where can i get it done?Originally posted by Shashank K R View PostIf the oil level doesn't go down every 1000-2000kms by much (as in there's no or negligible oil consumption), there's no need. Quoting an article from AnandTech-Originally posted by newwannaberider View PostPlease explain what is valve lapping? I'm not an expert in such matters. Where can i get it done?
"What is Valve Lapping?
Valve Lapping is basically sanding down the surface of the Valves (which allow fuel and air to flow in, and exhaust to flow out) and the Head (Holds the Camshafts and valves) where they make contact with each other. This is done by applying a Compound Paste (pretty much just oil and a fine grade of sand) to the edges of the valves and spinning them in their seats on the head.
What are the benefits of Lapping?
The two that I am aware of are*
1) creates a better seal between the valve and the head, which will prevent gases from escaping during the compression stroke of your engine.
2) the greater contact area allows for more heat dissipation from the valves to the head which will prevent burnt valves."
Is there any problem in your engine such as loss of power or reduction in mileage?
