    Final free service update

1 year ownership and final free service update :

Just got done with final free service today. Bike completed an year 20 days ago, so far so very good. Have ridden total 9500 KMs so far. I don't commute to office daily, thus less average travel in city. Some time ago I did a short term(8-9 months) ownership post, the experience remains still the same - enjoying the ride without any glitches.

What has been done in final service -

    - Engine oil and oil filter change, after 3200 KMs, I saw the old oil drain myself, came out in good quantity. Thumbs up for Yamalube FS.
    - Front brake fluid top up. Because after last front brake pads change, I still could feel a little higher brake play, decided to top it up. Brakes working good.
    - Tappet adjustment done. Was getting loose marbles like sound throughout the RPM range since 3 months now, which Yamaha engines are quite infamous for. Waited for the summer heat to go down. Bike sounds like initial days now.
    - Chain slack adjustment, apparently the chain was too tight. Hah!

    Long pending to-do list -

    - Need to find little taller clip-ons which could be a direct fit on R15S(39mm fork dia).
    - Yellow(?) LED headlamps, rains are starting and this 55W bulb is also deeming useless. Or might buy Phillips xtreme vision plus 55W if someone confirms those are really good.
    - Seat rebuild from scratch.
    - I do not like the front indicators position, its too damn low for any car or bike in the front to see from their rear view mirrors. I'm brain storming on that.
    - Spot lamps. I'm thinking of replacing the front indicators with low wattage spot LEDs and find a better place for the indicators. Might use them as DRLs.

Suggestions are highly appreciated on all the above points, fellas.

Jacket: Biking brotherhood's 'iRide iLive'. Using since 6 months now, brilliant all weather jacket, got for 7500/- from a local BB dealer in Pune.
Helmet - SteelBird Oscar, some anniversary addition, more than an year old. Planning to upgrade to a DOT certified one. Should be lighter though.
Gloves - Some Scoyco's racing gloves. Got good protection overall, except wrists. Got locally for 1500/-. Planning to upgrade them as well.
Missing thing is knee guards, those shall be acquired soon. I have really sexy short legs, difficult to find good quality in that size.

Rest, so far so good. Peace.

    Regards.

Even the best form of paint protection is susceptible to wearing out & loses its efficiency over long periods of time, although certain companies that sell polishing products/services claim that the coating/protection will last for 6-8 months and sometimes even upto a year. I really find such claims to be laughable

In our weather with its extremities of heat, cold & dust combined with relentless sunlight, the best way to take care of the paint in my opinion is to do a shampoo cleaning followed by a good application of high quality polishing Wax (Formula 1, Turtlewax, 3M, etc) once every 4 weeks or as soon as you feel the polish has deteriorated.

I have been using Formula 1 Premium wax for almost 10 months on my Spark Green R15S the paint looks as good if not better than the day I bought it home.

Few tips for you: Do ensure that Wax you are buying is genuine, I have seen lots of fake 3M Wax polish and Formula 1 lookalikes in the market, Best way is to ensure you are buying from a trusted location/authorised dealer. Because fake products might do more harm then good to the paint.

Let the Wax dry our totally before you rub it off, I have seen some of my friends wiping it off before the wax had time to set in and the results were less than impressive.

And finally the fact that matters most to me is cost, a 250 Gram container of premium wax will not cost you more than 500-600 Rs. and will easily last you for a year, or less depending on how many vehicles you use it on. (More money in the bank) ;D

Also there's no feeling of satisfaction like the one you get on seeing your own reflection from the polishing job that you did yourself!

    Cheers!

Read my answer above, I don't think it makes sense to get a paint protection coat which costs about 8-10% of the bike's value. But then people may have different opinions about this; What do you say?

    Pros,
    1. Looks great.
    2. Front end feedback is too good while cornering. I can literally feel the asphalt through the handle bar.
    3. More forgiving on rider's error.

    Cons,
    1. Lower end torque sucks big time which leads to frequent gear shift in stop and go traffic.
    2. I dont know if its just me or not but i feel that front end is diving little too much during hard braking.
    3. Headlight illumination and spread is very poor even though we have twin lamp setup.
    4. why there is no protection for rear mono shock? Yesterday it rained here, my rear wheel sprayed/projected all the mud directly to the mono shock.
    5. RVM has blind spots. Have to turn my head during lane changing.

Overall i am happy with the looks and its sweet handling, I would say "poetry in motion"
    Pictures are coming.

Looking froward to a good relationship with this baby R and brotherhood from this forum. Cheers!!
So finally you took the call!

Congrats on your priced acquisition, Great to see proactive riders joining the brotherhood!

Lets wait to find out how you feel after munching more KMs on the R15s.

    Don't forget ATGATT.

    Happy Riding, Cheers!

Congrats on the new bike. I own same color R15S since one year and been a wonderful ride so far.

Even though it wasn't a question, I'd like to respond to some of the concerns you have -

    1. Lower end torque sucks big time which leads to frequent gear shift in stop and go traffic.
That was my 2nd challenge when I newly bought this bike especially coming from FZ, but once the engine was run in fully (around 2000 KMs), the low end grunt got better. So trust me, once you pass a few thousand KMs with it, you'll see the difference in low end performance. *It also helped that I'm a lightweight guy *
PS: Don't babysit the bike in run-in.

    2. I dont know if its just me or not but i feel that front end is diving little too much during hard braking.
This is a front heavy bike, whether in neutral or on move. So a little dive is bound to happen. Its not exactly a deep nose dive I faced with my last bikes though.

    3. Headlight illumination and spread is very poor even though we have twin lamp setup.
That was my 1st challenge and still is. Its poor reflector design doesn't help with anything.

    4. why there is no protection for rear mono shock? Yesterday it rained here, my rear wheel sprayed/projected all the mud directly to the mono shock.
That's not a major problem to be honest.

    5. RVM has blind spots. Have to turn my head during lane changing.
These are still better than other faired bikes we currently have. Though I'm also planning to put blind spot mirrors as soon as I can.

    Enjoy the ride.

    Regards.

Looking at this pic of your R15s brings back memories of the day I got mine (same color)

I call my ride 'Nimbus' which stands for "a luminous cloud or a halo surrounding a supernatural being or a saint" also because I am a huge fan of Dragonball Z if anyone remembers it from the early 90s

Take good care of your bike & Please invest in some decent riding gear. (Mesh Jacket, Decent Helmet, Gloves & Ankle protecting shoes are a must)

Go easy on her for the first couple of thousand KMs not because the manual says so; But rather so you know how it reacts in different terrains & situations. Control the urge to push it to the utter limits. Practice lots of braking till you figure out exactly how much load the front can take under panic situations. Listen to the feedback from the engine & the handlebars & let the bike teach you its ways. (Sorry if I sound too poetic here )

In your spare time learn how can sharpen your riding skills & Search YouTube for Twist of the Wrist II - Abridged do check it out!

And since the rainy season is fast approaching, get a bike cover if you park it outside and buy a can of lube spray and use it religiously after every ride in the rains.

Apologies for the long post with a hell lot of instructions, just sharing my insights here.

Looking forward to hear about your experiences!

    Cheers & Ride Safe!
