  • [Ownership Thread]: Royal Enfield Continental GT 650

    I booked my bike (Dr. Mayhem) on November 22nd 2018 and took delivery of it on 13/05/2019.
    I haven't ridden it much other than in and around my house and office commute (still on temporary registration), but hoping I'll get my registration soon.
    Initial Impressions:
    Pros:
    1. The engine is smooth.
    2. Clutch isn't that heavy.
    3. Nice and torquey.​
    4. Smooth gear shifts.

    Cons:
    1. The engine lugs on first gear in lower RPM(1.5k-2k), would be bad lug the engine while running in.
    2. The rear view mirrors are pretty much useless, especially the one on the right side. It is offset to the front because of the front brake oil reservoir.
    3. Contact with the hot engine is unavoidable in stop and go traffic, hence always wear full length jeans while riding, no matter how short the distance.


    I do intend to take it for a longer run this weekend, shall keep you guys posted.

    The first free service will cost Rs. 2,578.19, this includes oil filter, engine oil and chain lube.
    Other than these I got ceramic polishing done.
    After the service:
    1. The revs more smoothly now, I have redlined it a few times on the highway and reached a max speed of 150 kmph.
    2. The lugging has greatly reduced, you will have to get used to riding around with a half clutch.

      1. The engine does have some vibrations, the mirrors vibrate visibly but for a short burst and is gone as you pick up speed.
      2. The rear view mirrors are pretty much useless, especially the one on the right side. It is offset to the front because of the front brake oil reservoir.

      Dr Mayhem is my favorite of all colors in the Continental do post some pictures I haven't seen one in person or anywhere in pics yet except in RE site.
      The vibrations are because of the clip-ons even I felt them during test rides its very minimal but I love the riding position of Conti over Interceptor its more engaging experience.

        The vibrations are more or less non-existent after the first service and it will get better over time. Other than that, the bike lugs under about 2k rpm in the 1st gear, it is an odd feeling riding with the half cultch, but I have gotten used to it by now. I did stall it a few times in the initial days.
        I intend to wrap the handle bars with leather straps, that should help a bit and replacing the stock mirrors with bar ends should also help (as the vibrating mirror puts an illusion of exaggerated vibration)
        And yes, I have an R15 and couldn't bring myself to feel comfortable while sitting upright. I love the aggressive stance on the conti, makes it very easy to split lanes.

          While everyone has been buying or lusting over the Interceptor, i found the position upright and the footpegs fouling with my legs. If i like the Continental GT, i'll choose the same colour as you did!✌🏻 The single seat will look absolutely stunning!

            I come from owning an R15, was riding my friends Mojo for a few days and found it extremely difficult to adjust to the upright seating position. Hence chose the continental GT and I absolutely love it, despite the weight and the girth it is very nimble and can be flicked around in traffic easily. Just need to get used to the weight that's all.

                Hey Vikas, Congrats.

                I have booked a continental GT650(Dr Mahyem) on June1. Good to see a fellow member in the same color.

                Were do you stay? Which showroom did you take the delivery from? How about the accessories stock availability?

                I am planning to get Fork gaitors installed before delivery is it a viable option?

                  Thanks and congratulations to you too. I stay in Indiranagar, Bangalore and took the delivery from Teknik Motors on 100 ft road. Coming to the accessories, I suggest you ask them to book it before hand. I have added a crash guard for now and it was not available in black and I had to settle for chrome, other than that I asked for the single seat and they had to order it, will be getting it today.
                  The other accessories that are available for this bike are
                  1. Fork gators.
                  2. Sump guard.
                  3. Bar end mirrors.
                  These are readily available in stock. It looks like the accessories that also work with the interceptor are readily available.
                  And for the fork gators I think the showroom would ask you to take it to the service centre.
                  The most important nuts are the ones connecting the man to the machine!

                    I dont know why the waiting period is till 3-4 months. because of the recent ECU update they had to roll back bikes which completed production i heard.

                        Hi guys... Is there any way to lower the current stock handle bar position? To give it a more dedicated cafe racer styling?

                        Or is it feasible to put after market clip ons directly?
                        Will it affect the turning radius and handling?

                        I can compromise on the comfort aspect of riding. Im seeking the true cafe racer riding stance.

                        Anyone who knows how to lover the handle bar.. Pls enlighten...

                            Take it to SVC and ask them to do so. It requires only loosing of 2 bolts, sliding the handle down (they will slide down on fork) upto Lower T and re-tighten the bolts. You can do it yourself within a couple of minutes if you look at the assembly carefully and readjust the handles upto your dream Cafe-Racer position and Yes, Lowering the handle bars will affect turning radius as they will come in contact with sides of fuel tank during turns, though there is always a margin upto which you can lower handles.
                            Stay away from after market handles as there quality will hardly match what RE has provided as stock.

                            But for more Classical setup, you can get the upper T and handle changed to RE CGT 535 parts. They are directly interchangeable and for me, those handle bars looks much better the 650 version.

                              That looks hot. Do you ride long with that setup? I am planning on getting a headlight cowl and I might need to replace my handlebars then.
